One thing Cruise absolutely understands about modern cinema is the meta experience. So many people are up to speed on what's real, what's practical, and what's CGI well before a movie is released. Just sitting here watching this on KZbin, knowing Cruise, Teller, and everyone else were actually in those cockpits out in the sky absolutely heightens the experience.

I really like the theme of the movie. Early on Admiral Cane talks about how the future doesn’t need pilots like them. But Maverick believes that pilots are crucial because they make choices that AI or anything else can’t. They act on instinct and that’s exactly what Rooster had to do here too. Fanboy didn’t get the laser in time so Rooster acted on his instinct and shot blind. It really puts into perspective how important each pilot is.
@kingfistloa
@kingfistloa 2 жыл бұрын
you're right. but if you replace these people in this particular situation with multiple drones or air craft driven by AI, they dont have to rush in 2 min. They can complete this mission in a longer time, destroy target, then get shot down. no one dies. cost more money but less risk. I still think AI is the future, in movies or irl.

You cut the part where Hangman is cheering like crazy on the hit announcement. He wanted to be on the mission and rather than pout like a child he was ready to support and even had a major hand in saving the day. I've wondered if Maverick wanted him on deck for his "come in and save the day if we're in a dogfight" ability. He was the one that pushed Maverick the most in the dogfight scenes.

@@JaySee8866 If bombs are dropped from say 700 feet above ground at that angle, that's like a 2 second flight before impact. Little guidance fins can't do anything at that speed and altitude, bomb is pretty much a bullet. If they would drop bombs from 40 000 feet, that's where lasers are dead accurate. This was my only gripe with the movie. If you're so low, you gotta dive-bomb it, oldschool. Aim with the plane. I think it would make it even better, if pilots would have to train and master this skill, not relying on guided bombs.

Every plane in the movie aside from those already on the ground and Maverick's WW2 era prop plane at the end were CGI. Different planes were used as reference and then replaced digitally. The shots from inside the cockpit were real though because you couldn't see the outside of the plane to properly identify it accurately.

Just a couple of details I loved about the climax. . The way cyclone says “send them!” - the fact you can hear the cat shots of each dagger below deck as they take off. - rooster saluting his plane captain/handler. - when mav says “here it comes”as soon as they clear coffin corner. - I knew that mav was going to fly an f-14 and I was going to annoyed if he just jumped in and took off. The start up and pulling the pins was great. - the fact we got to see Mav really fly the hell out of a tomcat! “Splitting the throttles” And omg sending the missile from the felon 1 into the falling felon 2. As a teenager the first movie blew my mind. As 50 year old loser it was everything I hoped.

Earlier in the film, Maverick sadly reflects how he wishes he'd been a better father figure to Rooster as he grew up. Here, Rooster says "Talk to me, Dad." and it cuts straight to Maverick, his deceased dad's best friend and the remaining father figure in Rooster's life, who says "Come on kid, you can do it. Don't think, just do." And Rooster sheds his worries and becomes the great pilot Mav always knew he was. Epic.

It kinda pays homage from the first movie that Rooster slows down, hesitating then just goes. Maverick did the same thing in 86, disengaging because he freaked out. “Roosters reengaging” Top Gun 86: Maverick’s reengaging, sir!

Love that there's no music in this scene. A dangerous choice by the director, but it ends up letting the sound of the fighters and the reactions from the pilots do the work creating the tension. Masterpiece!

I think I know why the WSO of Maverick’s wingman was Bob. It’s because in “The Last Samurai,” the samurai retainer assigned to watch over Tom Cruise’s character was nicknamed “Bob.”

in the last 20 or so years, Tom Cruise has wanted a "Bob" in his movies. You mentioned Last Samurai, Bob in this film, his bobblehead in Oblivion is named "Bob", etc. (There's more examples that escape me right now, but I remember noticing this too!)

Well they could using the data track. Start off high like Mav and immediately go inverted heading down hard into level off then quick left right turns low to the ground then the only wrong bit would the ratchet up slowly for the popping up sections but yeah go inverted again top of loop (which is near end of the circle cos it looped round into the straight to carry you back to near beginning before the pop) then swivel round still dropping right way up attitude and sudden deceleration and up ratchet again to start finish place.
