Seeing him call out Angus’s parents for leaving him behind was so satisfying

All the characters are so well-written. Even the parents, who are unsympathetic characters, aren't simply heartless monsters-they are more so inattentive to their son & perhaps (particularly the stepfather) lacking in some empathy for him. You can understand the mother's point of view too, regarding the stepfather, but Paul Giamatti's character delivers a solid rebuke, and reminds them that they have been neglecting Angus' basic needs. It's such a great movie!

That is the moment of his growth - he finally escaped his past and he did it for someone else - fantastic scene. Look how he struggles when he forms his answer but once decided he is STRONG! Fantastic movie - this movie has restored my hope in the art!

Great film. I love that when talks about the boys potential, the mother has this guilty look on her face, knowing she's been putting all her energy into making herself happy, and pushing away her son on purpose.

I love the moment between Angus and Mary. All they needed was the warm embrace of one another after the acknowledgement of the situation. They take the roles of the mom and son they didn’t have on Christmas.

I know it's a film, but I hope when Angus is old enough and moved out he cuts off contact with his mom, teach her a lesson and calls out the step-dad and rips him a new one. That's the Canon future in my mind.

@@SQUIDBEARSTUDIO Exactly. Like she literally decided to abandon her son at Christmas just so she could go on her Honeymoon and didn't even tell him until the moment he expected her to come pick him up. The least thing she could've done was given a few days notice so then he would have the chance to possibly make other arrangements

If the earlier scene when Angus lied to get his arm fixed and this scene has taught me it is this, sometimes people lie so that a more important truth can be said.

Here is amply demonstrated the strong bonds that human beings can form... bonds that show the full capacity people have to care about each other. When Mary walks in, sits down next to Angus and takes his hand we see how friendships can transcend the loneliness of any individual. I will always remember this movie and the profound emotion it stirred in me and I will remember how much I cared about its three principal characters: Paul Hunham, Mary Lamb and Angus Tully. They were very real for me.

The mom is only caring for her ex-husband because, as a mental patient's designated carer, it grants her access to his vast wealth. So, when she says "I'll have to move Tom again!" she isn't saying that because she cares about her ex getting better or being cared for - it's because she is pissed she has to now waste time and money searching for some new facility to take in her ex.

That was the goal of the director. When they made the film two years ago he said he wanted it to feel like it was shot in the seventies and the entire film looks and feels that way. I saw this film in the theater a few times and it is very underrated and deserves all the awards it has gotten
