CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Labiche (Burt Lancaster) tries to prevent the Germans from executing Papa Boule (Michel Simon) for sabotage.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Frankenheimer directs Burt Lancaster in the tense spy thriller The Train. Lancaster plays Labiche, a French railway inspector. Allied forces are threatening to liberate Paris, so Col. Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield) is ordered to move the priceless works of art from the Jeu de Paume Museum to the fatherland. The head of the museum (Suzanne Flon) attempts to convince Labiche that he should sabotage the train on which they are transporting the art. Labiche is more focused on destroying a trainload of German weapons. After his friend is killed trying to stop the train with the art, and after a consciousness-raising conversation with a hotel owner (Jeanne Moreau), Labiche resolves to save the antiquities. Lancaster and Frankenheimer had worked together previously on both Birdman of Alcatraz and Seven Days in May.

Paul Schofield - at his peak in the 60s - is awesome here. His face at the 1 minute mark in this clip is spot on. Wolfgang Preiss as the honest soldier similarly great. While Burt Lancaster was the Hollywood star he would have loved acting in such company.

Due to a delay in filming, Michel Simon's role had to be curtailed because he was committed to another project. So they had to have him shot. It's a tough life, acting. Pity, too, because he's absolutely brilliant in The Train. Four francs are four francs (tiny eye shrug).

Michel Simon nicknamed Papa Boule (Daddy Ball) has put a coin to obstruct the oil supply circuit, which causes the machine to heat up (as leakage and pressure decreases). Probably a soldier of the First World War, the old man, proud of his machine, doesn't admit submission to the Germans and prefers to die rather than belittle himself in front of an officer. A hero this Papa Boule ...

Did you notice the very sad face of Papa Buole when he gazed at Burt landcaster before he was to be executed? That three minute shot was heartbreaking.

Turning point of the movie, The script called for bull to die in a integration room. they needed and extra day of filming ,But The Actor had to be on another movie set the next day, So The Director furious over the problem , Put bull up against the wall and had him shot! Brilliant !

I have this movie on DVD. If you listen to Director John Frankenheimer's dialog, he mentions that actor Michel Simon's english was so bad that they ended up dubbing in another actor's voice. Works tho.

Frankenhiemer also had a way of dealing with actors he felt were difficult. Both the French actors who played "Papa Bull" as well as the conductor were executed. This was his way of releasing/firing said actor

In an earlier scene, Michel Simon says, "I used to know a girl who modeled for Renoir. She smelled of paint". This was an actual reminiscence of Simon's. Apparently, he was quite the Bohemian in his youth.

The Train is one of the best movies of all time , sure it's all about WW2 , as German forces were being driven out of Paris ! But don't miss the most important aspect of the movie ! It's all about one man's greed ! Stealing France's national heritage , the priceless art from that museum ! Human life's mean nothing to this German Coronals plan , to steal the paintings , all for himself ! Paul Scoufield play's this role so spectacularly , a man devoid of any emotions or concerns for anyone ! And will stop at nothing , because of his self possessed greed ! The sad fact of his character , is that there are people all over the world that are averesious , and will stop at nothing to take what they want from someone else ! Labisch ( Burt Lancaster ) is the only one , who knows , how evil the coronal really is ! After seeing his mentor Papa Boule, executed by a fireing squad , that he must stop at nothing , and killing Coronal Walldheim becomes his obsession ! Well deserved ! When you watched that final scene , as he glances at all his dead country men , having just been executed , put there by Coronal Walldheim , to ensure Labisch , wouldn't blow up the Locomotive ! Next he turns back to the Coronal , and all the evil & killing this deranged , greedy , and heartless man has brought about to his friends , countrymen & France , flashes through his mind with a accumulative effect ! After listening to Coronal Walldheim's speak about , how he never knew what he was doing, in stopping him & how the art will always belong to him or a man like him , Labisch machine guns , Coronal Walldheim. This movie is loosely based on a true event , about the Germans stealing France's priceless art , as Paris was about to be liberated by the allies ! The real Train never was able to leave Paris due to endless red tape and paperwork !

I can't help but think, how Labiche would have acted in 1942 when they were loading up you-know-whos to take them to Auschwitz. It has crossed my mind.

I have several classic cars. I was asked by someone, "What does your wife (now ex-wife) think about them?" Like it was any of their business. I said, inspired by this film. "They mean as much to her as a string of pearls to an ape."

First of all practically in military terms the war for Germany is lost however the German colonel squeezed as we see every possible way steam engines & rail roads to bring the precious boxes to Germany here the French resistance manage to stopped the train by sabotaging its steam engine as we see the old man took the high risk to achieved this but after an investigation the Germans notice it & the old man was caught on the spot with the result to get shot finally the film gave us a good account & covered well everything that has to do with the possession of the goodies & because it exceeded it was made only in black & white so to say to preserve it through time for posterity .
