CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dillinger (Johnny Depp) escapes the jail in Tucson, Arizona with a fake gun and the help of another inmate.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43, director Michael Mann's sprawling historical crime drama follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale ) in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (Billy Crudup) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? Determined to bust Dillinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi), Hoover christened Dillinger the country's very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated Dillinger's ingenuity as a master criminal, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbly surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his only hope for busting Dillinger's gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-lawmen as official agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayals so cunning that even America's criminal mastermind wouldn't know what hit him. Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star.

This actually happened. He actually took people hostage with a peice of wood shaped like a gun. John Dillinger must have had one hell of a poker face.

this is the official story. If you watch this video and believe any escape this complex could be accomplished with a piece of soap or wood and a police baton, you are gullible. I would bet my life it was an inside job.

For John Dillinger's famous escape from Crown Point Jail, the film makers decided to film at the real jail which had been closed and turned into a set of small shops and became a historical site. They dressed the jail and store fronts on the square to it's original condition as it would've appeared in 1934. They also filmed the Little Bohemia shoot out at the real lodge. Johnny Depp was actually staying in the same room the real Dillinger stayed in

John Dillinger did the real life gangster things that you'd only see in a fictional movie: break his friends out of jail, escape jail twice (including with the wooden gun escape here while stealing the warden's car on the way out), walking into police stations unrecognized, going to Wrigley field ball games while being most wanted, and even writing a letter to the Ford motor company to thank them for their fast cars, among others.

The prison building had a design flaw which shortened lines-of-sight by the officers on shift in a bullpen about 1/2 story below the main lockup, and the flaw allowed Dillinger to take several officers captive one-by-one. In his brief time there, Dillinger had noted the flaw, AND the slack procedures that had officers relying only upon personal recognition of each other's familiar voices to open critical locked doors. He also noted who routinely carried keys, and who carried pistols (not all officers did -- esp. those "inside" who dealt directly with prisoners). At one point Dillinger and the three fellow prisoners with him had, like, 10 officers and prison staff corralled in the small prison kitchen, the door of which opened onto the alley at the rear of the prison. Only one officer balked at obeying Dillinger's orders, but this act of bravado was too late in the process to affect the outcome (he was allowed to live -- Dillinger respected his professionalism). The other officers were meek family men who submitted readily. Across the alley from the kitchen door was the vehicle garage shown in this clip. The weather was worse than shown here -- rain and light sleet, IIRC. The prison's warden was actually the **widow** of the prior warden, a senior sheriff who had died of natural causes a couple of months before -- but running the jail was that family's business, and times were hard, so she took over. Needless to say, her tenure did not outlast this escape; she was ousted from the post. The black guy shown helping Dillinger here was the most resolute and best-disciplined of his cohorts; he went his own way right afterward and was killed just a couple of weeks later in an unrelated dust-up.
