CLIP DESCRIPTION:
While lost in the jungle, Kirk (Robert Downey Jr.) and Alpa (Brandon T. Jackson) conflict with Tugg (Ben Stiller) and discuss racial issues.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Ben Stiller's satirical look at Hollywood, Tropic Thunder concerns the production of an epic Vietnam War film that quickly derails thanks to the giant egos of everyone involved in the production. Stiller stars as Tugg Speedman, an action hero trying to segue out of that genre. Jack Black plays Jeff Portnoy, a drug-addicted fat comic also attempting to change his image by taking on such a serious film. They star alongside Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), one of the world's most awarded actors, and a man who insists on immersing himself totally in a role. In this case, that means Lazarus has had his skin dyed in order to portray an African-American soldier. After their outrageous behavior lands the film's director, Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan), in very hot water with producer Les Grossman (Tom Cruise), Cockburn takes the advice of grizzled Vietnam vet Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte); in order to gain control of his performers, Cockburn drops the actors off in the jungle, planning to film the movie guerrilla-style with hidden cameras. When the group stumbles upon a heroin production camp, the actors are unaware that they are in very real danger.

@@A_Turner rewatching it, I can see how someone might get that interpretation since RDJ didn't turn around. However, I've always taken the tone of his "huh" to indicate that he's shocked Alpa didn't co-sign his low key attempt to cry racism. Alpa had already made it clear by this point that he isn't cool with Lincoln self-identifying as a Black person (even as a method actor). Within that context, Alpa's call out makes Lincoln break character and remember for a brief moment that he's not actually Black.

Probably one of Robert's best roles. He really immersed himself. The voice, his motions and mannerisms. Most of his other roles are just Robert being Robert with the manic level adjusted based on the character. A super hero, a detective, a doctor.. It's just Robert. When I see him on screen I say "That's RDJ". But when I see this role, I say "That's Sgt. Lincoln Osiris." Just watching RDJ enough in this, makes me forget it's him under the make up.

It's stupid that I have to qualify myself first, but as an African American, this movie is hilarious. RDJ is NOT in blackface!!!! Tropic Thunder is making FUN of Hollywood movies. All of the cast, have issues and are making fun of how tired and cliched alot of the films are. The movie is ACTUALLY asking a very important question that is still being wrestled with today. At what point is it unfair/unacceptable for a person of 1 group to play/act in a role of someone else? Again RDJ is NOT doing blackface. What makes it all the more interesting is that his stereotypical lines are being balanced against an actual African American character. So the movie is well aware of what it is doing and is able to create some very interesting s scenarios as a result. Again, I find it interesting that most of the people offended by this ARE NOT even black!

If there are people who found this offensive, would it be right to say that individuals who complain about this should find the movie White Chicks offensive also? Or since white people aren't considered an oppressed minority, maybe it really depends on which race an actor from a different race is playing to be considered offensive by certain individuals. However, I always find it weird when individuals who are not even from that race being targeted, are always speaking on behalf of those people, dictating what they find offensive and do not.

When people ask why RDJ got away with blackface send them 0:32 it's ultimately encapsulated in this joke. The irony and self awareness of method actors who try so hard to become something they're not, to the point it reaches such absurdity that their cognitive dissonance is revealed. That's why this movie gets the pass. Also because it's hilarious.

It got a pass because it was made in 2008, 5 years before millennials came of age and destroyed the world with their politically correct sensibilities. That's all it comes down to. Technically this is black face, it's satirizing the concept yes, but the fact that Robert Downey Jr is playing a black man that is not even appropriate to the time period is a pretty sensationalized version of a character.

This movie is comic gold.. it should stand alone the characters are not even the same by the end of the movie, so it would be pointless to try and recreate the magic. - i think it was meant to be a one time kind of thing and its so perfect for it. no sequel = it will be viewed as a masterpiece in its genre, which it should. same actors new project..maybe..but they shouldnt go back to this..it was perfect.
