When I saw this movie first in cinema I wasn’t sure whether I liked it as much as the other versions. Now I adore it. When I realised he was going to sing I cringed, thinking it would be another Pierce Brosnan SOS effort as I had no idea who he was. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. It’s just beautiful and the harmonies are simply Gorgeous. He looks so handsome, modest and at ease, don’t know how Jane wasn’t throwing over that other twit for him!!!!

This scene is one of my favorites in the book. When Mrs. Weston shared her idea about matching Mr. Knightley and Jane Fairfax, she exclaimed! It's so funny reading it. I wish I'd see that in this adaptation. But nonetheless this jealousy scene is on point.
@mehwish75583 жыл бұрын
I'm currently rereading the book after 5-6 years and yes that scene really stood out to me. Emma really lost all her composure when poor Mrs. Weston came up with the idea. I laughed reading that entire rather long argument between them. Lol, so worried about Little Henry's future wasn't she? ;)

This song is great! I wish there was a part where he and Emma sang something Drink to me only with thine eyes, And I will pledge with mine; Or leave a kiss but in the cup, And I’ll not look for wine. The thirst that from the soul doth rise Doth ask a drink divine; But might I of Jove’s nectar sup, I would not change for thine. I sent thee late a rosy wreath, Not so much honouring thee As giving it a hope, that there It could not withered be. But thou thereon didst only breathe, And sent’st it back to me; Since when it grows, and smells, I swear, Not of itself, but thee.

I love the performance and I don't mean this as an insult at all, but I wonder if Flynn was given direction to sing in an unpolished kind of flawed way in order to make his performance humble while beautiful? He is a professional musician, so I wonder if he would perform this very differently as "himself". The violin is very beautiful, I love the colour of the wood.
@katerinaaqu3 жыл бұрын
Well not all musicians can sing as well. Playing an instrument like violin means that one has a good ear and can reproduce the sound (thus here he is making second voice which is really hard) but that doesn't mean that all musicians have necessarily angellic voices. Having right and correct voice and having beautiful voice are two different things. Being vocally trained is a different thing.
@cotofeya3 жыл бұрын
@@katerinaaqu I think the comment was about the fact that Flynn sounds a bit different from his usual manner when in character. You can check out any of his songs to see the vocal is not identical, he seems to have adapted it to sound right for the character he plays
@katerinaaqu3 жыл бұрын
@@cotofeya It is possible that he is vocally trained, that's what I mean. I mean that not every musician is vocally trained. If he is vocally trained then indeed he could be requested to sing in a simpler manner. Also since this is a live performance where he is also playing and he is singing second voice it is not unusual for a person's voice quality sound different than when they sing in recordings or in solo. There are many factors that might as well change the quality of a voice of a person especially in live performances. Anyway I am not saying that this is necessarily the case with this guy. I have not known his work at all so I cannot judge. I only mention the fact that musicians are not necessarily vocally trained. That's all. I am not implying that this is necessarily the case with this guy. He could indeed be asked to sing that manner
@anneberlin57442 жыл бұрын
@@katerinaaqu Flynn is definitly vocally trained and says somewhere in an interview that it took him quite a while to unlearn the kind of perfection he was thaught in the chapel choir. Here he shows just a tiny bit of it towards the end of the song.

Too soon this emma realizes her feelings...she is blind, not stupid: "A mind like hers, once opening to suspicion, made rapid progress; she touched, she admitted, she acknowledged the whole truth...It darted through her with the speed of an arrow that Mr Knightley must marry no one but herself!".
@ladyhawke24334 жыл бұрын
Emma doesn't realize her feelings in this moment but she's experiencing jealousy and distress exactly like in the novel when Mrs Weston makes that same remark, and Emma is really annoyed by the idea of knightley taking a wife. She doesn't realize what's the source of her distress but she does feel it and the reader knows what's up even though she is an unreliable narrator at this point. The actress here is conveying that element without saying a word. Other adaptations just ignore the clues about her feelings (or his ) because they confuse the moment a character realizes their feelings with the character experiencing it, which clearly happens way before that.
@bebly97974 жыл бұрын
For what I recall all other adaptations show emma's growing jealousy as well as mr knightley's, but they do that in a subtler way. And I prefer when the audience has to cooperate and pick the hints through the plot, rather than the character himself do that for me and explain me things.
@ladyhawke24334 жыл бұрын
@@bebly9797 it's subtle in this Emma too since it's mostly facial expressions alone and good acting. Either way, showing their jealousy and the way their body reacts from experiencing feelings is realistic and consistent to the book so your criticism seems pretentious. Emma is always in love with him, she just doesn't realize it yet. In other adaptations the romance, thus her feelings, feel a tad rushed to me because they are stuck with this forced belief she MUST only show her feelings when she realizes them but forget that even in the book there are hints prior that moment. Where a novel has a narrator compensating for the fact you can't see the expressions of the characters and how their bodies betray their feelings, in a movie you can see that and the emotions are played more because of a limited time too. Tl dr: I find some things are a consistent and valid interpretation of the source material that is just the novel, not the other adaptations and how those interpreted it all.
@L_Martin4 жыл бұрын
Just to add to what ladyhawke said, I also think the viewer can attribute Emma's unhappiness here as relating to Jane Fairfax, as this follows the earlier scene where Jane and Emma "competed" at the piano forte and Emma felt threatened by Jane's superiority. Then Knightley correctly guessed why Emma might feel threatened by Jane (because Jane is actually accomplished where Emma just gets flattered quite a lot by people who like her). So, to see Jane and Knightley playing a duet together here, Emma might unconsciously feel jealous because she's unconsciously beginning to feel attraction to Knightley, but nearer the surface, she may feel unhappy just because she feels threatened by Jane, and Knightley being the only person to see so penetratingly why - to see these 2 perform together, touches a raw nerve to do with her view of herself vs Jane as accomplished ladies.
@mollichina14814 жыл бұрын
In the novel Emma's jealousy in this moment is NOT subtle at all but you didn't quote that part, even if it's the scene you are commenting here. I didn't think an adaptation could so well include that moment too (because it's all in her thoughts) but they did.
