A lot of good ideas; tepid, bordering on cold, execution. Should have dropped the romantic subplot. God, Rene Russo's acting was damned-near atrocious back then. (She's a lot better now as Asgard's recently-deceased matriarch). Would have a much more dramatic impact if it was Furlong's young daughter he left in the past only to find her as a fully- grown adult in the future. Estevez was only at his best as a ired, rebellious youngster (e.g., The Breakfast Club, Young Guns and, hell, even Maximum Overdrive). Not so much here. Daring, sure, as a race car driver, but no anger to be found as Alex Furlong. Just contrived characters all the way around with the exception of Amanda Plummer's ball-busting nun and Mick Jagger's charismatic villain.

I don't know why this movie was so panned? It was really ahead of it's time and somewhat prophetic with people on top and people on the bottom, police being more like military units and the "televisor" similar to modern Skype. It was cheesy a bit granted, but given a better budget, better special effects and a similar soundtrack like the Scorpions, it could be a really good hit especially with the Cyberpunk and Technoir crowd. It was a good concept and overall a good movie. 😀

ATL checking in. Watching superbike races at the track where this was filmed, sitting at the bridge where Alex "died" and remembered this movie. Got to see them filming two streets over from my place in Atlanta, and I was so surprised how short Emilio was.

This is definitely the sort of movie that's worth remaking. Trying to re-do something like RoboCop was doomed to failure. But you can pretty much give a monkey the pitch that a race car driver is stuck in the future, and odds are decent you can come out ahead. There are some moderately interesting ideas thrown in there that just needed another big stir to see if they could actually come together.

I am here because of Pawn Stars... Season 6, Episode 24, someone pawning a " Freejack " movie prop, a 3-wheel "taxi" which looks like a cross between a old style NY checker cab and an Asian Tuk Tuk, with futuristic treatment for 1990's Hollywood.. Note show inset fact says movie budget was $30M. It has a lot of big actors. Anthony Hopkins (99 movies as of 2023) was not picky, like other Brit actors like Michael Caine (147 movies as of 2023). If they paid enough, they played.... Don't blame them... To be clear good actors, but hey they had practice. Ha ha. Some of the movies they were in were not good, but some were great. This movie is a rated at 26% Rotten Tomato, to 5.4/10 IMDB. Where one of my favorite futuristic movies "The Fifth Element" is 71% Rotten Tomato and 7.5 IMDB. I'd give 5th Elem 9/10... Worth a watch. I think I'll skip Freejack. PS the test drive was "not practical and bottoms out"... Owner wanted $13,500, the guy they call in Danny said it was worth $5,000, and Rick offered a surprisingly high $4,000. Owner passed on offer. Owner had ad for his campground on side in Sturgis SD. He should keep it, since it's hard to standout in Sturgis especially during the yearly motorcycle rally.

I watched this in the theatre when it came out. I had a great time, even though it's a complete mess of a film. Production design looks trashy, the acting is over the top and the action is less than exciting, but there is a lot to chew on. I mean, Jagger and Hopkins in the same movie! How cool is that!
