Another excellent review! You're one of my favourite channels as you speak of the things that would be important to me about a disc and even though I live in a flat, I cant warrant getting a projector set up, but I look forward to these... if you're looking for your next Tarantino I would highly recommend Django Unchained. Another one with Christophe Waltz, not only brilliantly evil in IG, but just as great in Django. Keep them coming, all the best!

I lived in a central London flat for more than 20 years Darren. Had projectors at one end of the living room and the ten foot drop down screen filling the room at the other. The screen would have been bigger but the room was 10ft 3" so that was the limitation. That was all a long, long time ago now but don't ever let living in a flat stop you from enjoying the cinema at home because projection is cinema. Django Unchained is a good suggestion. I hope it's available as a 4K disc though. Jackie Brown shouldn't be too long before that's given the 4K treatment and I rather fancy that one now. John.

Thank you Olivier. I think people were influenced by the information that this one was a 2K video master file and in their anger and disappointment they slagged it off when there was no reason to. What should have been criticized was the fact that the film industry ever thought that 2K was good enough to replace full frame anamorphic 35mm. That illustrates their lack of knowledge or the lack of interest in the work that they do. However, I'd never have guessed this one was a 2K originally so it's another illustration of what I call 'the VistaVision effect'. A greater quality original shrinking down successfully onto lesser formats. John.

We had the two blue, tip-up seats made for the back of the room where the projectors were and when it was time for a film show the blackouts came down and then the screen and it was time to go to the movies. I plan to replicate that in our living room here but it can wait a while longer. Have fun with creating your own living room home cinema. John.

I call it the VistaVision effect Kel because the image quality was there from the 35mm shoot and just like VistaVision (which was invented because larger format film results in superior 35mm reductions for general release), the 35mm shrinks down successfully to the far inferior format. Just look at TENET, mainly shot 15/65 IMAX, and it results in the best 4K disc thus far released. Start out with great quality and all the end products of all formats end up with great quality. John.

I own this disc and I think it looks just fine. I don’t understand why people get all up in arms about a disc being a 2K upscale. Really the reason we should collect 4K’s is for the HDR/Dolby Vision which is where the real difference is from normal Blu-rays. This is unrelated to Inglourious Basterds but I can now rip any of my movies including 4K’s with this optical drive I got for my PC so I ripped the Pulp Fiction 4K and recut it in Premiere Pro to be in chronological order and rendered it out at 1080p SDR and was able to keep the 5.1 audio mix and burned to a Blu-ray disc, made some custom artwork and it’s on my shelf. Haven’t watched it yet but I’m sure it won’t flow quite as good as the original but it will be an interesting watch nonetheless.
@moviecollector59203 ай бұрын
Morning Sean. I often wondered if Pulp Fiction had been jumbled around in the editing process rather than how it was scripted. It would have made watching it easier when it was first released but I now that we know how it was assembled and can follow the story because we know it, I dare say most of us would prefer it as it is. I hope you have fun watching the 'corrected' version though. The 4K of The Others confirmed that it's not really only HDR that makes a UHD disc superior to a Blu-ray. There is already the superior colour gamut of 4K and now that I've become more adept at spotting all that I'm finding Blu-rays are looking increasingly second best even when they've been taken from the same video master file as the 4K. Not always, but much of the time. John.

I adore your Jaws comment. Jackie Brown is Tarantino's greatest film in my eyes: it's his most serious piece; it has a straight dramatic tone and it takes place in the real world, not in the alternate world where his other, original films take place - it's the one time he adapted someone else's work for cinema.

I like it a lot and bought in blu-ray when it came out and I was willing to upgrade it when I started hearing rumors about the quality of the transfer I prefer to wait. After watching your commentary I think I would buy it. With the exception of "Pulp Fiction" I have most of Tarantino releases in 4K and I really like them, specially "Once upon a time in Hollywood" that did a full use of the format. Fingers crossed that someday "The Hateful Eight" receives an upgrade because it looks so good in Blu-ray and with Dolby Vision could shine more. The way that movie was shoot in 65mm (and all the other films that use that stock) deserve the love of 4K, starting with "Khartoum". Adiós, amigo.

I think many people got influenced by something they read or heard about the 4K of Inglourious Basterds because to look at this disc suggests it's a 4K and nothing would have persuaded me otherwise. I don't know how it was achieved but I expect it's mainly the addition of HDR. Clearly the original film shoot was beautiful but one thing to bear in mind is the HDR is a bit too bright. I'm able to rein it in with this video projector but some are reporting it was simply too bright. I don't think many people are able to set up a home video system as successfully as I though because there has been this mis-education that brightest is best which, of course, it isn't. I basically have the laser lamp on its lowest setting (50%) and the HDR output of the disc player at its lowest setting and adjust to suit from that starting point. With this particular release it all stayed where it was. I hope the weather's alright down there in Chile. Hottest day of the year so far here today at about 90F. I'm hiding indoors! John.

I think the film looks really good on 4k, IB was the first ever blu ray disc I purchased from Asda when I got my first ever blu ray player in 2009 and it looked amazing, watching those blu rays now however in comparison to the 4k as you mentioned it looks rather more like a dvd, things like the on screen subtitles just look off, out of focus and the many reds on the outfits and of the schwartiker's just look too luminous on bluray, also the blu ray has either very waxy faces or run too hot in any given scene, sometimes in the same scene, I noticed this has all been nicely corrected on the 4k, its a shame QT dosent involve himself in the 4k process especially considering that 4k best represents his intended vision, maybe he dosent like the idea of the effects of HDR, who knows but so far every QT 4k release looks pretty darn good. Thanks for another great video John.

Perhaps it's best to leave the video editors and graders to do their work without interference because sometimes the directors have different ideas and it doesn't always work out for the best. Then again, look at how Apocalypse Now was mastered with the involvement of Mr. Coppola and we couldn't have asked for better work than that. But it does still take the skill of the man at the keyboard. Blu-rays are still excellent and even when they're not quite so excellent, they are in isolation. It's just the 4K usually surpasses the BD and makes us realize what isn't right about Blu-ray. Strange that DVD often has better colour characteristics than the equivalent BD though. Someone trying too hard to make the BD undoubtedly better perhaps. John.

I have seen the 4K of Bullet Train Alex. I expected to do a review of it but the image quality of that one isn't impressive. It's not the quality of the video cameras used that causes it to be such a disappointment but it's the clearly evident misaligned lens almost all the way through of one of the cameras. I don't think anyone else has spoken about it but I suppose everyone else is looking at it on a telly so it won't show up so much. A lot of scenes are blurred towards the base of the image. I don't suppose a proper preview screening room was used to check the way the filming was going while they were making Bullet Train otherwise someone would have spotted it. I guess they just looked at the little computer monitors on set. Big mistake. Next time you watch it you'll probably spot it now but I'm sure it won't make much difference if you enjoy your movies on a telly. The same fault occurred with The Final Countdown years ago but everyone missed it on that too. It stood out here on a bigger projected image. I don't recall it in the cinema though (1980 I think) but I expect I spotted it even then because I'd already been a film collector for years. It is a bit distracting at times when this error occurs. There is extra scenes in the film Psycho which I hadn't seen before plus it says there is over 3 hours of bonus content on the 4K disc. I was amazed to get the pan & scan and Widescreen versions of Psycho 4 which was originally a TV movie. I can't wait for the Arrow Video 4K release of The Chronicles of Riddick coming out in September on 3 4K discs.

Interesting on Inglorious Ba$terds being a 2k upscale. I've got the 4K, just haven't watched it yet (saw the 1080p version years back). Yep, I think Jackie Brown is a sensible choice if you do indeed delve further down the Tarantino rabbit hole. I can't remember much violence in it so if your wife finds that Tarantino trope off-putting, then Jackie Brown should be fine... Overall I found it very different to his other movies. What is very memorable is that the characters are well written, fleshed out and acted - Particularly the thread of Pam Grier and Robert Forster. Music choices are very strong as always. Sadly no 4K available yet, but I do not think the 1080p version will give you a bad impression of what is an excellent movie. It'll be interesting to get your thoughts on it.

@@moviecollector5920 Looking forward to all 3 coming out and hearing your views on them, particularly Jackie Brown, as I say, I suspect both you and your partner will enjoy it. I've got 60fps 4k upscales of Kill Bill 1 & 2, while they do look pretty good and useful to have in the current absence of an official 4k, I will most definitely be grabbing the 4k versions when they come out. Ai enhanced I can support (in accompaniment of the 4k remux, not a replacement, version I choose depends on my mood) but not so keen on most of the fan project 60fps modified movies as some movies it really does not suit and there is an unnatural smoothness that makes you feel somethings off and takes you out of it. Although ironically those 60fps fan projects do look better than an officially produced 60fps movie like Gemini Man, which to me resembled a video game combined with a brightly lit TV show - Although that perhaps suits the particular movies audience.

Oh dear. That might mean it was video edited. Do you think the film was cut on film and then the transfer of that only done at 2K for the interpositve. If so, that indicates people in the industry at the time thinking a bit more than HD was 35mm quality. Surely they weren't quite that stupid. To be fair, they had spent the previous ten years or so downgrading image quality in cinemas to facilitate increasingly getting away with second rate end products. John.

@Motorheadache953 ай бұрын
It’s not lazy though, it’s just the reality of how movies were mastered at that time. You can’t just scan the raw 35mm negative, none of the post-production was done on it and it would be an enormous cost to redo it from scratch. Were 2K digital intermediates short-sighted? Sure. But you can still get a really good UHD transfer out of them- the HDR and color benefits in the digital master are much more readily noticeable than actual 4K resolution anyway.
@moviecollector59203 ай бұрын
@@Motorheadache95 That's a good summary. Colour is still superior on film but it's not an exact science like digital video. HDR has certainly given video filmic capabilities. It just needs a little more tweaking which probably means mechanical shutters in the video projectors and/or the cameras doing the shooting in the first place. That would probably finish the complete illusion as far as it can be taken in terms of being an accurate facsimile of film.

I think it's a massive assumption to say that this was cut and finished on film - I don't think it was. If it was, then they would've scanned the cut negative for the 4K. The fact that it's an upscale strongly implies that the original negative was scanned at 2K, edited on a non-linear system [probably Avid], and then finished digitally in 2k, with a 2k grade. Then output back to film for 35mm release. I think that every film of Tarantino's post 2000 has been done this way. Which somewhat undermines his bullshit 35mm purism. I think if you were to have a version of this film that was cut and finished on film, that was scanned from the original cut negative in 4K, and compare them side by side, you'd see the difference. For example, Pulp Fiction's 4K is superior to this - and that's because it was scanned in 4K from the original cut negative. There is no comparison.
@moviecollector59202 ай бұрын
I can't remember now domcoke but I think I looked up how it was done. To know why Pulp Fiction looks better would necessitate finding out the negative stocks used for each production because that has the biggest bearing on the quality of the end product. John.
@domcoke2 ай бұрын
@@moviecollector5920 It was finished using a digital intermediate. And they wouldn't have scanned the negative in at 4k, to then finish at 2k. So it would've been scanned in at 2k. So 2k is its inherent resolution. My point is, that without the equivalent 4k scanned from a cut negative to compare it with is the reason why you think it looks good. If you had that to compare, you'd be saying that the 2k version looks inferior.
@moviecollector59202 ай бұрын
@@domcoke I was only just thinking about this this morning and there were many films finished on film that only got a 2K cine to video transfer at the time. While I can't recall the exact details of Inglourious Basterds this was not an unusual practice when this film was made. Remember that the world was being prepared for the big downgrade at the time and therefore lower quality imagery in cinemas was de rigeur so that the remaining cinema going audience would think 'digital' cinema was at least as good by the time everyone had it inflicted on them. I think what you're saying is that the 2K transfer would not have been used for this 4K disc but it certainly looks like it was. A 4K transfer would have undoubtedly been preferable to but tell the difference we'd probably have to have a pair of ten foot wide screens projecting each side by side. Our home screens are simply too small to discern a difference most of the time. If you can find definite information about all of this one way or the other please let me know because we're both just putting our own thinking to it at this point. I'm pretty sure I looked it up but I'd have to do all that again and I'm just too busy to spend any more time on it right now. John.
