Those drab scenes with the crucifixion unfolding in the background and his mother&sister in rags and messiah blood washing away by the storm is cinematic. And then the healing of his loved ones from leprosy and the healing of his heart from the burden of hate is a great moment. Ben Hur is underrated. I could claim the best overall movie of 1950s hollywood.

I met Charlton Heston in 1996 and gave him a card thanking him for his movies and told him how much the kids in Mayapur loved them. 2 weeks later he wrote back asking me to thank the Mayapur kids and to give them his love. This is Hollywood the Golden era of epic movie making, No CGI no special effects the entire film was built on full size sets at immenses cost the actual race, was real using horse chariots what you see in the movie nothing was fake Charlton heston and stephen Boyd learnt how to use a chariot, during the scenes a stuntman was killed and was left in the cut apparently, it was said a 100 horses were killed in the filming of the race, too badly injured and shot by the veterinary. an impossible endeavour to produce on the same scale, in today's world of filmmaking with 10 to 15,000 extras the cost would be stratospheric, but it would a pointless exercises making a remake of this film for what purposes ,? For a start it doesn't have the actors who came from a different era in Hollywood moviemaking to fill the shoes of the original cast , like the two main ""protagonist,", actors like Charlton Heston or Stephen Boyd, the fact is ,it stands alone as the greatest movie ever produced by hollywood and ever will.

I always thought that Judah seeing Messala after the race and saying, "I see no enemy" was one final chance for them to end any final bad blood. That even for a brief moment, they can return to the way things were when they were younger and the best of friends, before their falling out. Yet Messala still wished to keep fighting and thus attempted to drive another pain of despair towards his former friend.

Messala is a fascinating character that even in his final moments of life, he refuses to meet Ben-Hur with half a body. Choosing death rather than giving Ben-Hur the satisfaction of seeing him with half a body. Notice the pleasure Messala exhibits when he sees Ben Hur's reaction to the news that his sister and mother are lepers. His entire being was prideful and arrogant.

This film adaptation is actually better than the book. It truly is a work of art, and its magnificence is captured in the way they did not try to impose their own interpretation of Christ, even to the point of not showing His face or uttering a word but simply letting His presence tell the story. Although He is largely in the background, the entire story revolves around Him. What a different society we have become since 1959 and we are the worse off for it.

I thought the book was also superb. The fact that Masala lived but was crippled and his Egyptian girlfriend dumped him was an interesting side story. William Wyler was once quoted as saying, ''For a movie like 'Ben-Hur,' I guess it takes someone Jewish like me to do it right.'' And indeed, not only was Willie Wyler was an Alsatian Jew, but composer Miklos Rozsa was a Hungarian Jew and producer Sam Zimbalist was a Ukranian Jew. I am sure there are some cynics who will say ''those people'' will do anything for a buck, but look at the reverence of ''Ben-Hur'' or ''Quo Vadis,'' another great Christians/ Romans epic which Zimbalist produced and Rozsa scored. Think also of historic events Christians forced on Jews like the pogroms or the Holocaust. Wyler, Rozsa and Zimbalist were true professionals.

Thanks for posting this. One of my favorite movies, albeit a little long. The choice to not show Jesus’s face is such a brilliant one. The choice to not show leprosy and its horror is also brilliant. Instead, Wyler allows the viewer to grasp the horror by seeing the other person’s reaction, or the awe at meeting Jesus (like the Roman guard who stops in his tracks when he comes at Jesus for giving Ben-Hur water).

@mkfd4571 - the choice not to show the face of Jesus was because of British law at the time.
