I remember as a little boy when it happened. By then I was staying with my father at likoni in Mombasa, Kenya, close to the Indian Ocean. The Israel plane passed through Mombasa very low to the sea headed to Uganda. They refuelled in Kenya moments after rescuing their hostages on their way back home. People who witnessed it Said the plane was just flying close on land. President Kenyatta had close ties with Israel at that time. Which means he allowed them to pass through the territory. Then they flew very low on lake Victoria and emerged up to land in Entebbe. It was a swift calculated mission. Fisher men in Indian Ocean and lake Victoria wondered and mused over the low flying monster like plane that passed by very swiftly with a somehow deafening but soft sound. Later on to hear in the news that Israel commandos had raided Uganda. Wow, it's a memorable story.

I was in South Africa at the time of the event. The front page of the broadsheet newspaper in Durban (Natal) had just three words in a HUGE font. "Entebbe Raid ...." forgotten the last one. The entire country, black, white and coloured spent that entire day going about their business with a huge smile on their face. Everyone knew how Idi Amin had murdered an estimated half a million of his own people. It was a truly transforming day for much of Africa, and South Africa in particular. Such a pity that, today, South Africa and most of the surrounding states to the North and East are AGAIN in a state of barely contained chaos.

Charles Bronson was a major box office star at the time of the release on television and the director Irvin Kershner was a first-rank movie director. I always like to believe that Bronson agreed to do the movie for two reasons---One, the subject matter was straight up his taciturn, yet efficient, heroic characterization alley, and Two, Kershner always had a knack of making outsized cinematic spectacle seem nuanced and intimate (Exhibits One and Two---- the Star Wars series' best movie 'The Empire Strikes Back' and Sean Connery's James Bond return 'Never Say Never Again'), which appealed to Bronson's essential no-fuss bad-ass screen persona.
