One of my favourite movies of all time. I think I watched it at least 20 times in a row after I watched it the first time. All of the characters are named after prisons. Quentin - San Quentin State Prison, Holloway - Holloway Women's Prison, Kazan - Kazan Prison, Leaven & Worth - Leavenworth Prison, Rennes - Centre pénitentiaire de Rennes & Alderson - Alderson Federal Prison Camp If you have access to the DVD I recommend listening to the audio commentary (with writer/director Vincenzo Natali, co-screenwriter André Bijelic and actor David Hewlett). I think David Hewlett (who plays Worth) said that when they were in 'red rooms' they couldn't be in them for long because they would get very irritated with each other very fast and that the 'blue rooms' were very calming. Not sure who said this (Natali or Bijelic) but the coloured panels would also start to melt because the lights behind them were very hot.

My fave horror movie - it shows the violence that comes from people just doing their jobs while emotionally detached from the system they're creating/enforcing. No one made the cube: it was just the logical consequence of everyone doing their job in a system that needs constant output.

Yes, I loved this explanation in the original movie. They ruined it with the sequels though.

"No more talking. No more guessing. Don't even think about nothing that's not right in front of you. That's the real challenge. You've gotta save yourselves from yourselves." Fun Fact: To show their support for the Toronto film industry, the special effects company C.O.R.E. did the digital effects for free. Better Ending Fact: Director Vincenzo Natali deleted a final moment from the film in which it's shown what is outside the cube. He said when he was paring the film down in the editing room it was the first thing he removed. Meta Cube Fact: The set contained just one cube, changed to different colours by means of gel panels. Since it was a time-consuming process to change from one to another, the film was not shot in sequence, rather colour-by-colour. The red gels were the first to be installed, meaning all scenes in red rooms were shot first. As it happens, red rooms contain the most dialog-heavy scenes in the film, including Worth's big "there is no conspiracy" speech to Holloway. The film had a modest budget and a tight schedule, and David Hewlett recalled being very apprehensive at shooting scenes that contained pages of pure dialog on his part very early in the shoot. However getting them out of the way first turned out to be blessing, since the rest of the shoot was more enjoyable.

I believe part of the inspiration for this was the Twilight Zone episode "Five Characters In Search of an Exit."

I loved this film, but my wife practically became obsessed with it. She's seen it so many times, lol. Not only was it a clever "Twilight Zone" kind of story, but they spent their limited amount of money wisely by building one very high-quality set and just shooting it in a way that made it look like 17000 sets.

I’m 40 now, but when I saw this as a young girl, I always remembered the sucking on a button keeps you hydrated thing. Growing up in Destin Florida we did a lot of deep sea fishing and camping and now I live in the city but I always remember that survival Hakh that I learned from this movie

wow. Never expected to see this. Wicked indie Canadian classic. Really innovative, and creepy. Love it, particularly the ending. Too many movies these days fear such an ending.

There was only one cube for the set and they changed it by swapping colors. Goes to show that you don't need a massive budget if you're creative enough.

"cube" is what i'd describe as a perfect example of what a movie is. a dumb "hey, what if... _______?" that i'd watch multiple times.

Oh by the way! I don't know if you take recommendations off of YT at all for polls, but it doesn't hurt to mention other movies haha. On Netflix there's an excellent one called 'The Platform' / 'El Hoyo'. It's actually a Spanish movie (It's called 'El Hoyo', but if you look for it online, you'll see it under both names I mentioned), so I'd recommend watching it with subtitles to follow along, and it's incredibly thought provoking. It has a dystopian feel and is all about survival, similar to this in that sense. What human beings will do with their backs against the wall with limited resources. It's so well done and sadly, I think, a very accurate depiction of what would happen if such a thing existed (what's depicted in the film -- the premise). I love movies that make you consider what you think you yourself would do in these types of survival situations....

This was a really good request from that viewer. I really like this movie and glad to see you reacting to some older, more obscure stuff. There's 2 sequels and a reboot you might want to check out. I highly recommend Cube 2, I think it might be the best of the series. Cube 3 is also good and there's a recent Japanese reboot that's also good and has more modern effects, but Cube 2 has some really cool traps/kills like you were looking more for in this one.

What a great surprise! I actually only just saw this movie for the first time around a month ago and I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Very cool concept and great story. The acting is rough and it's a little campy, but it's a fun time and again, the idea itself is awesome and must have inspired so many films since then. Looking forward to watching your reaction over lunch 😊

I remember watching this when it first came out and was super into how interesting the concept was. Especially when we learned how HUGE the facility must be. Like, where on earth is it located?! I haven't seen it in at least 20 years though. It was interesting seeing Worth, since now I've seen Stargate Atlantis and have a new appreciation for the actor! :D

The first Cube is still the best of its series, and Saw took the concept further with an iconic villain. There is countless other imitation, and just as you mention extra-terrestrial, there is an indie movie with that concept called Circle (2015).

Deinitely one of my favourite movies. The sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, is terrible (it's actually the one I saw first, and it's just not good), I strongly recommend not bothering with it. However ,the third, which acts almost like a sequel, prequel, and side-quel all at once, it greatly expands the lore of the universe, telling a story from the perspective of the low-level people tasked with observing and operating the cube contraption.

You mentioned that the cube could be alien, and there's always speculation as to what was beyond the white light - if memory serves, on a very early promo poster, the cube is shown floating above water on an alien planet. Or something like that. Another sub mentioned the director cut the final moment showing what was beyond the cube - and went as far as destroying every copy of it - so I'm guessing it was indeed alien. Glad he cut it, though.

Yea there’s autistic people who are “savants”. Rainman who was based on Kim Peek was on the spectrum. There’s many others if you look it up. They do amazing things. Things that are incomprehensible. Like know what the weather was on ANY given day in history. There’s one guy who counted Pie up to 22,000 digits. The same guy also learned fluent Swedish in 2 days. Which is one of the hardest languages to learn

And this film series is actual true trilogy, rare, but it is. As a whole its fund to watch, but part one is the ultimate best of all. As for the rooms, there was only a single room it was shot in.

This Come with a Wild number of really cool but mostly unknown scifi movies of The very late 90tys. A few, dark city,.13 floor, gataca, event horizon, Iron giant, and posibly even blast from The past (more of a comedy) prior to matrix just wiping them all of The Face of The earth They are all very diffrent movies, but sort of a time capsul of late 90tys. Specially 13 floor that is sort of The scifi version of The 90 to what night as The roxbury is to comedy 90tys

If you feel like it, give the sequels a whirl. The story gets worse and more convoluted as typical sequel exhaustion goes, but man the traps can get creative. You seemed interested in the variety in this movie, so hey, maybe they can be a popcorn-type of watch with no seriousness given.
