Hollywood is a business and it's main aim is to make lots of cash. If millions of people want to watch garbage movies, that's the only argument Hollywood needs. If an intelligent, grown-up movie is successful, it's almost by accident - but they'll certainly take the credit for it. Think of the dumb interference of the 'studio' when Coppola was trying to make 'The Godfather'.
