I would DEFINITELY be interested in a comparison between this Criterion 4K and the BFI 4K. So I can get more information and buy what I feel seems like the best version.

2:25 "Michael Jeck Commentary"- Jeck was actually one of my professors in college! One of the courses I took with him was a Japanese Film course, and of course he brought this up in the class lol (I watched the full film with his commentary, and many of his points were things he had also said in the class so I had heard him say much of it before, but in person)

Yes please! A comparison between both versions would be fantastic. Either way, I'll have to import so would love to get the best version possible. The BFI with Dolby Vision seems like the frontrunner to me so far. Thanks!

I look forward to the BFI comparison. Hopefully we get more information about the source print that each of them used. I heard a couple of months ago that the master that they both got from Toho was the same and in SDR, but Idk if that's true. I'm curious what the dynamic range of the source print is regardless tho

I went with the BFI 4K release due to the inclusion of HDR10 and Dolby Vision on that one.
@SeekingGodsWill21 күн бұрын
I am so intrigued by their being an additional release of this movie that includes Dolby Vision... I mean, how could it not be better at that point? I would love to see your coverage and a small side by side comparison of the 2 products. I was locked to buy it at Barnes and Noble, but I felt justified in not purchasing it because of this additional information. I love when the movies have Dolby Vision, even though it usually looks great still without it on Oled. I just feel more like I am getting my moneys worth. I still get annoyed when the people do Non HDR releases on the movies. Cannibal Apocalypse from Kino is a non HDR transfer but it looks insane and spins at 100 mb's through the whole run time... So I guess it's just my perception and doesn't matter as much as I think it should. I personally just want my images in 4k to pop off the screen with crazy Vibrant and or lush colors. I get a kick out of that. In this case I am hoping the Blacks will become Inky on the Dolby Vision transfer like in the movie the Train with Burt Lancaster, or Streets of Fire with Willam Defoe.

I preordered the BFI version for the Dolby Vision and I also own the Criterion blu ray.
@inmate161420 күн бұрын
@@leonardgbrisebois The criterion packaging is absolutely beautiful so I may end up buying both. Not sure how Dolby Vision can have much of an impact on b&w film considering how warm it is but cannot wait to see the comparisons

So looking forward to this! Thx for the early review. I wonder how the Criterion compares to the BFI version.
@kevindudley961721 күн бұрын
The BFI 4K release (which is on its way to me) has HDR10 and Dolby Vision whereas the Criterion Collection is a 4K SDR master.
@TheOfficialEmirati21 күн бұрын
@@kevindudley9617 I've read online that there is little added difference in the HDR on BFI version. However, I wonder if due to Dolby Vision container on BFI it will be better on uncalibrated TV's.

@SpaceCattttt21 күн бұрын
So, if you have the old release, stick with that for the extras and buy the BFI release for the film. If you don't own Seven Samurai at all, buy both releases.

The BFI release states that it has an updated and improved set of subtitles; which is especially important to someone like me who doesn't understand Japanese. Does the Criterion release have this too?
@Spawn00520 күн бұрын

I don’t understand why Criterion continues to skip HDR for these classic releases (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Seventh Seal, etc) while BFI goes the extra step and adds it. Given the premium price Criterion charges it is quite a disappointment.
