@@RetroCarsForever Beautiful video shots of the car in motion. Despite the all too often regurgitated meme about the C6 interior being subpar, the C6 interior is in reality a perfectly beautiful example of form following function, completed in high quality materials, and with a nod to the iconic C2. It's a perfect match for the stunning exterior.
@RetroCarsForeverАй бұрын
@@canoedoc2390 I agree, I dont think the C6 interior is nearly as bad as many people say. Especially if you get them with contrasting colors (like mine with the tan interior). It's a HUGE step up from the C5's interior, which I really noticed when I had the C4/C5/C6 all together for my comparison test (kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2mXipytoLZ-h5o) Modern cars have much better interior materials overall, but back in the 2000s, I feel the C6 interior was basically par for the course. And glad you liked seeing the cars in motion, so do I! Takes so much more time to film but cars are meant to move, so I love going that extra mile to feature them doing what they do best.

Great guide. I bought a 2007 C6z 2 years ago with 14k miles for 42k. It's been very reliable. I got the heads redone for peace of mind. That cost me 3500 and gained about 20hp since they're ported as well. Only two issues. I had some difficulty starting and found the throttle body to be going bad. I replaced it and the intake filter that was dirty for about 200 doing it myself. Also the fuel gauge stopped reading accurately. It can get deposits on the reader in the fuel tank. Some techron additive fixed that. Cost me like 20 bucks for some bottles of it. It's recommended you add some every so often to prevent it. No other issues and those were minor. Great thing about vettes is the forums have a huge community with posts for years that can help with any issues. It's always fun to drive. More fun than the C5z or C7 z51 I owned prior. Feels more special too with the 7 liter.

Thank you! I'm quite fortunate to find the exact color combo that I wanted with my C6. The C4 does have its own list of common problems. I think the big difference is when anything breaks on the C4, it's usually reasonably easy to fix, whereas the torque tube/saddle bag fuel tank setup of the C6 means many components are quite a pain to get to. My opinion is if you have the money go with a 2010-2013 Grand Sport Manual, all the performance of a Z06 minus a bit of HP with the LS3, highly upgradable motor and reliable. You have one of the best of the best Corvettes IMO! As much as I love pop up headlights, I completely understand why GM made the switch, and I applaud them for holding out as long as they did (until 2004, the C5...That and the 2004 Lotus Esprit were the last mass produced cars ever made with pop ups). Not only had pop ups fallen completely out of fashion by 2005, but they were heavier, created more drag, couldn't light as well, and pedestrian safety concerns were making it more difficult to design them. Going from my old C4's pop ups to these C6 xenons was a "night and day" difference during night driving. So I appreciate the functionality, even if they dont look as cool as the pop ups did.

Very well put together buyers guide. I learned a few things watching! A couple thoughts: The Z51 is a big deal and a must in my opinion. It has the secret sauce of shorter 1,2,3 gearing and it makes a huge difference. I had an 08’ Z51 and went to a 16’ non Z51 and the gearing totally changed my enjoyment. I also don’t mind the 06+ steering wheel design. I see the 05’ steering wheel and throw up in my mouth wondering how someone hasn’t changed it out yet. 08+ base car is definitely where the value is from $20-$25k.
@RetroCarsForeverАй бұрын
Thank you! I've actually never driven a base non Z51 C6 at any sort of speed, so that's interesting to hear how the different gear ratios make such a difference. I certainly never feel like I need any more speed with my Z51, even though it is the "weakest" C6 with a "mere" 400 hp! And I agree on the 2005 steering wheel, I don't find it particularly attractive either.
@Tyler97GSXАй бұрын
@ It’s somewhere around 10 mph at the top of each gear difference for a non z51. It’s nice to be able to pull through 1/2 and not be doing 80+. I also did an auto cross event in each car and the Z51 was perfect in 2nd gear for the slow corners. The non z51 was noticeably more bogged in second and didn’t pick up as well.

The 2005 C6 6sp had a major flaw…DBS. Dead battery syndrome. ( do an internet search on the subject and the hits are endless ) Putting in reverse and shutting off the engine in that order did not guarantee the battery would not die. Electric doors compounded the problem. GM would flash the computer repeatedly but never resolved the problem. Only 05 6 sp had this issue, 06 and newer were not plagued with this problem. I LOVED that car and aside from that it was an awesome car but after 5 years of ownership I had to sell it due to the unreliability caused by this flaw.
@RetroCarsForeverАй бұрын
Woah, that sucks! I didn't realize that there was that additional issue that plagued the 2005 model...I figured most people that struggled with that problem just were manual owners who were unaware that they needed to put it in reverse. Did removing the Onstar fuse help at all? Supposedly that draws a decent amount of battery power when the car is stopped. I removed mine when I got my 2007 as OnStar doesn't work anymore anyways.
@kadkars2753Ай бұрын
I never tried removing the on-star fuse. Maybe I should have. I did add a priority start module to the car. It would disable the battery when it got to 11.7 volts. At least at that point I was no longer getting stranded. But having to crawl into the car from the hatch got to be an unfortunate situation. Believe me..I wanted to keep the car. Eric O of south main auto would have found the issue

I Loved my 2009 C6 Crystal Red Tintcoat Z51 Coupe. I didn’t beat my car, but that LS3 just seemed like it wanted to Pull and Pull and Pull! It had 7,244 miles on it when I sold it to Carvana for $34,800 in April of 2019. Local dealers in the Central PA area wanted to buy it for close to $29,000, so I did much better at Carvana! Whoever got it, got a great car. It was never in snow, being garaged away for PA Winters. It only saw a little rain twice and no one ever smoked in it. Also, it never had any fast food or other food in it. No spills either.

I’ve become set on getting a C6, in no small part due to your videos. Do you have any experience yet with the car inclement weather? I live in the PNW which gets the occasional snow storm and a whole lot of rain. Thanks so much for all your content!
@RetroCarsForeverАй бұрын
That's awesome to hear! And great questions... I have yet to drive my car in anything worse than heavy rain. No problems, but I suspect those huge could hydroplane if I went too fast (at least on my summer tires, all season/rain tires would do a lot better). I am originally from the midwest, so I can give you my educated guess on how the C6 would do in snow. The active handling/traction control is first rate, and would certainly keep the power under control. The wide tires would be an issue, as skinnier tires are more snow-friendly. But the biggest obstacle in snow would be the limited ground clearance, especially on the nose, which sits just a few inches above the ground. So going out in unplowed snow would be a challenge. But with good tires and keeping the traction/active handling on, it would be just fine getting around in inclement weather. As a bonus, MOST of the car is made of materials that don't rust!
@moparr2826Ай бұрын
@@RetroCarsForever Thanks for the response! I had a GR86 that did well with some winter tires, and to be honest I would likely try not to drive in the snow if possible. I have an 85, which I love. Of the more modern Corvettes, I like the C6 styling the best. It most reminds me of the early C4, especially the round taillights. However, the C5-C7 still retain some of the classic C4 silhouette.
@RetroCarsForeverАй бұрын
Agreed! I think they nailed the styling of the C6...To my eyes, its the last of the truly beautiful Corvettes. The C7/C8 are more brutal/aggressive, a result of function over form perhaps.

Huh, not sure why that is...Maybe its how big and open the wheels are, and how big the brakes seem? I've never actually used water to clean my car (just use spray and microfiber towels) so Ive never noticed this, even in the rain. Does the squeal go away?
@KITT089Ай бұрын

One thing I would add to the Z06's 95% of the performance of the ZR1 for half the price is that gap widens quite a bit if you live somewhere that's significantly above sea level such as where I live in Denver. If you are fortunate to not live at a mile above sea level I would agree that the Z06 is indeed the better buy.

@RetroCarsForeverАй бұрын
When researching this issue, I saw numbers that were all over the map. Some techs claim up to half of the cars are affected (the ones where the heads were made in a certain plant, which was roughly half of them). Others claim it’s overblown and just a few percent suffer the issue. I just want to make sure people are at least aware of it. Personally, even if there was only a 5 percent chance, I wouldn’t want to risk it, considering how valuable the car is, how expensive it is if the engine blows, and how relatively inexpensive the repair is.

Haha! It's in the same dang spot almost, too! Although I can forgive the Optispark more easily than the balancer issue on the C6. The Opti was an advanced design that engineers just didn't think through long-term. And once the engineers realized there was a problem, they at least improved the design to a vented style for later C4s. The balancer was pure corporate decision making that had everything to do with buying the cheapest part possible, and not ever fixing it. They should've known the issue was there after the first few model years.
