Here are some movies that I can't have in my collection for various reasons, some are VERY controversial but some are even Oscar winners.
This is just my personal opinions and I always think that a person has the right to see any movie they like

I’m trying to get through the 1001 movies I must see before I die List and Salo is in there and I think it’s going to be one of the last films I’ll ever watch in that list if ever. The only Film I’ve seen of the ones you’ve mentioned is Schindler’s List and I own it as well. But regarding the others, I’ll probably never see them, maybe I’ll watch Life is Beautiful one day. But that Ginea Pig film I think I’ll give it a miss, there does come a stop with films and that sounds like it is way over the top. Good video matey.

Salo is a funny movie as its both a well done movie about a kind of time in Italy when these things happened but its really, but its really hard to watch!! Ive only seen it twice once waaaayy back in the day and the next time a few years ago.... can only watch it rarely 😱 Life is Beautiful is meant to be a great movie, but I think it could be really SAD!!!! I dont know if I want to go there mate!! Yeah Guinea Pig has no redeeming qualities at all 🤢 cheers for watching and commenting 🤩🤩👍👍

Great video (as always) mate! *Orders the uncut American Blu-ray of A Serbian Film straight after watching this* As has probably been said in the comments already, you should at least watch Schindler's List once in your life. The UHD that's out is a thing of beauty and can often be found in some kind of deal. The hardest part about it is probably it's lengthy running, instead of it's content. Don't get me wrong, it ain't a fun film, but probably isn't as hard to watch as you've might have heard/think it is. I also recommend you watch Life is Beautiful, as that's in a strange way more heartwarming than heartwrenching. Remember seeing it at primary school when I was 11 or 12 and I don't think my school would've shown it if it was emotionally draining. A well made film, but maybe a bit too happy-happy-joy-joy considering it's subject matter. For me personally Dancer in the Dark is much more depressing than Antichrist. Possibly because Antichrist has an atmosphere which leans much more to a horror film, compared to DitD. I do like the fact that DitD seems like a big f*** you to the musical genre in particular. Makes it a pretty funny film when watched with that knowledge. Salò and Cannibal Holocaust are ofcourse absolute masterpieces and Salò should be in anyone's collection. Keep up the good work and take care. Cheers!

Irreversible is another film that I have no intention on seeing as-well as stuff like Anti-Christ. Excellent video John and a very important and interesting topic. I avoid anything with animal cruelty (hence I have never watched Cannibal Holocaust and never will, even the edited version, as I'm not drawn to that sub-genre anyway. A film that I never wish to see again is the French movie 'Irreversible', it is just too harrowing and horrific although it's a well-made film. I saw it once about 15 years ago and wished I hadn't watched it, I felt depressed and upset for days afterwards. I wonder if you've seen this film and if so what are your thoughts? Indicator are about to release a spectacular special edition Blu-ray of it but it's one I personally won't be purchasing. Again, great thought-provoking and compassionate video John, good work. Interesting vid Johnny 🤔 psychology plays a big part in those films. Tapping into fears subject matters that repulse us. There are a lot of films that are championed and classed as Art masterpieces. I have seen a fair few and I think I remember telling you that the 1st time I was on youtube there was a group of the community that revelled in those extreme subjet matters. I had no desire to watch anything that they were watching but then sometimes I can't watch nature programs due to the graphic nature..it all relates to psychology what we as individuals perceive to be too much. And to think that the BBFC and Mary Whitehouse sought to ban the likes of The Burning. Thought provoking vid mate hope you are safe cheers 🍻 👍 😀 👌

Brilliant concept for a video, John! Cannibal Holocaust and Salo are two that are hard to recommend but they have good elements to them! I haven’t seen Sophie’s Choice before but it sounds like a hard watch. Schindler’s List is unreal but a very tough watch. Life is Beautiful is an AMAZING film but a hard watch. The Green Inferno is pretty bad in my opinion, Eli Roth’s film doesn’t justify its existence whatsoever and it’s childish and immature, unnecessary is the right word. I haven’t heard of Titticut Follies before 🤔 Antichrist is one of the bleakest films ever made... I’ve been in two minds about rewatching it at some point but it’s such an uncomfortable watch... never heard of The Bunny Game before but it sounds pretty vile... I think I remember you mentioning Men Behind the Sun on the podcast, sounds very brutal. Dancer in the Dark is one of my favourite films ever made, it ticks all of the boxes for me but it’s definitely an exhausting watch both mentally and emotionally. I’ve heard of Traces of Death and it sounds like one I wouldn’t be able to watch myself. Mondo films sound a little too much for me. The Guinea Pig series is one I’ve heard of before. A Serbian Film sounds absolutely gruesome, I’ve heard about some of the things that happen and I’ll definitely being avoiding it. Fantastic video, John!

Hey, John. I hope all is well, Brother. I m a fan of Green Inferno. I thought it was good. But, it is CLEARLY a Cannibal Holocaust knock off. Eli Roth himself said that this was his nod to Cannibal Holocaust. Even the name is taken from Cannibal Holocaust as the jungle was referred to as the "Green Inferno" in Cannibal Holocaust. I never heard of most of the other films. But, I did make the mistake of buying and watching A Serbian Film. That movie definitely crosses the line for me too. Fantastic video John. There are a few films that I think are truly brilliant despite their difficult and challenging subject material, that others find unwatchable or indefensible. Irreversible and Martyrs are two examples. I won't go near any of the Italian cannibal films that have animal cruelty in then. On the topic of depressing subject matter, I get a sort of cathartic release from those sort of films, I'm sure there is some psychological reason for it. Exploitation cinema is a strange area of interest, some of it I adore, some of it just doesn't sit right with me. Cheers 👍

Hey John. I usually draw the line with things like faces of death. Those kind of things. When it's a movie that has a fictionalized story i'm more forgiving towards it. For example, Don't Breathe is a very realistic film that deals with present day issues. But because the story and the characters are fiction i have no problem watching it. As a matter effect, i find Don't Breathe to be a quite impressive film if you saw my review. I absolutely love Cannibal Holocaust !. I think there is a lot to say about that movie !. I saw The Green Inferno, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I can’t recall any scenes of animal cruelty, certainly no simulated scenes at all. He was just a shopper at the Chiller Theater Horror Convention, here in New Jersey, and I recognized him and said “Hello, Mr. Roth.” He shot me a look, like he was utterly disgusted by my mere presence, and said “excuse me, was I talking to you?” He glared for another ten seconds, turned away and mumbled something else, which I couldn’t make out. A vendor said “don’t worry about it man, he thinks he is Cecil B. DeMille, and has been as ass to everyone today…” Bad day, maybe? Who knows, but I never looked at him the same.

I’ve watched a Serbian Film a couple of times uncut, it is very disturbing at times but also a well made movie, but it’s also very over the top and goes so far to shock that for me it loses some of it ‘shock value’ because of this and just becomes a bit silly. I would say Salo is far more disturbing as it feature the torture of young people male and female and the actors who are quiet young take part in this simulated torture and other depraved acts, it’s well made but it’s a difficult movie to get through. The Green Inferno is just a gory modern cannibal movie and it’s not the first as there is a found footage movie called Welcome the Jungle which also plays homage to the Italian cannibal movies, there is no animal cruelty in either. Movies like Schindler’s List and Life is Beautiful to me are essential movies to have in a collection as they tell very human stories and celebrate the goodness of people amongst a time of pure real horror. I agree with you on the Guinea Pig movie, it’s just gore and torture and little else. One of the most disturbing but well made movies ever has to be In a Glass Cage (which stars Gunter Meisner who was in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), a Spanish movie that is available on Blu Ray with English subtitles, it’s directed by Agusti Villaronga who is still making movies, most recently a movie called The Belly of the Sea, but other movies of his worth checking out are Moon Child and Black Bread.

Yeah Serbian has no benefits for me unfortunately, just think that if you go for shock value keep it in the realms of believability, as you say its a bit...well....daft as well as just too much 🥶 I think Salo has its merits and is a far more accomplished film, but wow its very graphic!! Shindlers list is a tough watch but it's still a vital part of our history, in essence it was a good ending as shindler saved 1000s of Jews from death. Green inferno was a let down, the way it was built up was that its going to be one of the most extream films ever made, I went into the garden to watch the lawn grow afterwards to try and salvage something from the hour and a half of mind numbingless crap I'd just endured.

I'm to scared to watch Antichrist, due to the themes. I've seen a few scene's from Men Behind The Sun and don't have an interest in watching the full movie. I have no interest in ever seeing or owning A Serbian Film. One movie you didn't mention that I will never own is August Underground. the Green inferno is actually not bad it's a good idea of how the people actually end up amongst the canibals, i didn't care for Schindlers list because it was so dramatised and was made from the book which won the award for best fictional story, one of the most depressing films i've ever sen is THE SEVENTH CONTINENT by Michael Haneke especially the ending it was like i was witnessing it for real and won't choose to watch it again it'as the same with the Uwe Boll movie STOIC it's just harsh you watch it and there's nothing redeeming it's just harsh right until the end then it stays with you! the Uwe Boll movie SEED uncut was also a hard watch for me it has footage of horrendous animal cruelty right from the start and that just sets the tone for the whole movie i still collect these movies just from a collecting stand point and my Uwe Boll Blurays are rare Black editions and pretty much impossible to get hold of but but as i say i'll collect them but have no desire to re'watch them once is enough!

Life is beautiful is one of my all time favourite movies. It is heartbreaking, but such a beautiful movie. It makes me cry every time. The Titticuts one you mentioned seems like pointless exploitation of mental health. Salo I've seen but would never watch again. What disturbs me more, is how much pornography shares a similar premise and is extremely popular. I get being horrified and disgusted by it, but watching it for jollys? Sick. I saw the full uncut Cannibal Holocaust once, never again. Whats annoying is, like you said it is a really effective horror movie, but that just spoils it. I don't think I could own a copy even with the cut version. Dancer in the dark is one I've been recommended, but have yet to watch. Traces of death sounds very similar to Executions which I saw years ago. Like you, since becoming a parent, theres something in my brain that refuses to allow me to watch it. I just don't want to see it. I've seen the Guinea pig movies. I didn't feel they were particularly realistic. I watched and reviewed the entire BBFC collection of video nasties with a friend in case you're wondering why I've seen all this sick stuff. I knew A Serbian Film was going to be No1. I did a rant after I watched it. I was absolutely disgusted. I got a lot of flack for it. If you want to see it search 'Lisa Loves so I watched a Serbian film'. Great video john.

Sophie's Choice another great movie with a stunning performance from Meryl Streep, it didn't hit me as hard as I thought, Green inferno I rented on amazon when it first came out, not a patch on Cannibal holocaust in my opinion and very forgetful, Antichrist I hate but then again Lars Von trier as a director just goes for shock value for me much like the house that jack built of which I hate, a serbian film 😡 just unnecessary in every way , I have heard of the other movies but don't wish to see them 🤢 Another really good video John 👍

Men behind the sun and its sequel Black Sun: The Nanjing Massacre seem to be missed opportunities by Mou Tun-fei and i fully understand why people don't like them as a works of fiction. The crimes commited by many of the individuals in unit 731 (and others) were covered up and richly rewarded by the Japanese and US governments (ala Operation Paperclip). I can see the reasoning behind the creation of the films but imagine if he had made actual documentaries on UNIT 731 and the Nanjing Massacre with interviews, etc instead of fictionalizations that take place during the events. They could have been of credible educational value instead of meh horror flicks. I have to admit the topic of films one refuses to own is interesting. There are of course films that i won't watch even if it's oscar worthy and includes almost everything by Roman Polanski except for Rosemary's Baby due to nostalgia. Jeepers Creepers may be a fun film, but i refuse to support Victor Salva (i found out a couple years ago about him and gave away my DVD). August Underground's Mordum deserves a special mention in the catagory of what is seen cannot be unseen (avoid it at all cost). Great video essay and keep up the solid work.

Just found this channel, and it's great fun to watch! The only movies I would never want to own in my collection are the real-life death shockumentaries. I just think that most of them are incredibly disrespectful to the victims, and as if they're made for you to sit there and "enjoy" the carnage. I'm sure some of the italian mondo films have legit qualities, but stuff like Traces of Death is just pure evil, black-hearted crap. Now, about A Serbian Film... I genuinely like that movie, a lot. But I don't see it as a exploitation thing, really, I just view it as a phenomenal thriller with a great, original plot and intriguing characters. And the filmmaking is fabulous, with camerawork that recalls masters like Michael Mann and William Friedkin. The craft feels very 70s, and I love it. Unearthed Films put out a blu-ray of it, and it looks glorious. I get that the subject material is too much for a lot of people, but if you like transgressive and uncompromising art, you should give it a go.

The early 90s saw a glut of them take it to a far higher level than than the 60s and 70s ones (which were faked a lot) but as you say in general they are a pretty awful series of movies to entertain 🤯 I can see your point with A Serbian Film, for the most part it's as you say unexploitational but sadly the way it strays into the very dark subject matter made me turn off immediately 😳 I just think it shouldn't have "went there" but I do hear people liking the movie, but for me it was a step too far 🥴 thanks for this great comment though Backyard Pix 😊😊👍👍

I've been into horror/splatter/art house shock movies since a young age. There are not many subjects, including very controversial ones, that I refuse to watch. A newborn baby being raped is where I draw that line. Don't care how neat the camera work, production, and directing style is. I also don't care much for the filmmakers claim that the inclusion of that material is not at all exploitative, and not meant for shock value, when clearly that is precisely what it is. Saw a short film by the same director and it was, expectedly, filled with nothing but gratuitous shock tactics and there was a concerted effort to make the viewer think it was about an artists pain of creating art.... Incredibly pretentious, self-indulgent attitude from this guy, who thinks he can pass off such trash for meaningful and important work.

A Serbian Film has the baby rape scene, correct? If so, I agree; I do not wish to see that. I remember a decade or more ago, someone was caught with child porn, the news covered it. They mentioned a 4 year old being raped in a video. Having heard that, my imagination being quite good, I was horrified by the thought. I tried to stay away from the picture forming in my mind, but it formed and I was pretty depressed about it for a while. I wouldn't wish to imagine it, so I definitely wouldn't want to view something similar, but faked. It would be way too much for my mind to comprehend.
