In "Movies," I begin my channel's transition from film criticism to philosophy with an essay on the philosophy of cinema. The essay suggests that a movie is not an object external to us, but is rather an experience formed by the shared consciousness of the artist and the audience. From this, I argue that movies are conscious, and by extension, cinema as a whole can be viewed as a spiritual entity. Movies have religious significance because they allow people to connect to the collective consciousness. The bulk of this essay analyzes the past 100 years of film history to explore what this "cinematic consciousness" has been thinking about, in the process completing the analysis of the film canon I aimed to do with my "Essential Films" channel by weaving together the mythology of dozens of classic movies into a single cultural narrative.
