The rest of the story: Henry's witness protection moved him to Arlen, TX and he started going by "Hank". His wife's name was changed to Peggy. They had a son, Bobby. Feds set him up with a job selling propane and propane accessories.

He was a wild card and predictably unpredictable. His ego was so inflated he couldn’t control himself and killed anyone without thinking about consequences. That puts the whole business at risk. In my opinion it’s really quite simple. Not because he was “difficult to be around.” Plenty of egos are difficult to be around. He was just a huge liability and was better off dead for the sake of everybody.

@That V8 Life But Jimmy and Henry participated in the killing and didn't get hit. I heard the narrator's explanation and I think he was part right. But I took it that only Tommy got hit because there was no evidence against Jimmy and Henry. Henry, Jimmy and Billy were the only ones left in the bar when Tommy came back in and they killed Billy. Billy had been missing for a while and no one knew what had happened to him. Paulie even asked Henry if he knew anything about Billy missing and Henry of course said he didn't. But Billy had associates who were with him when his altercation with Tommy occurred and heard Tommy threaten Billy on his way out, and of course they talked, so the mob put 2 and 2 together knowing that was the last time anyone saw Billy. No one other than Tommy, Jimmy and Henry knew Billy was killed in the bar that night, so Tommy being the one they knew had motive where ever Billy happened to be killed was blamed for it,.

I don’t agree with the idea that Jimmy and Henry’s involvement in the Bats murder was overlooked because they were good earners. My take on it is that the higher ups really didn’t know who was responsible for the Bats murder, but they assumed that Tommy was behind it because it was known that he had a beef with Bats, and everyone knew how much of a hot head he was. Being good earners may have earned Jimmy and Henry the benefit of the doubt, but that would not have helped them if there was no doubt to be given the benefit of. If the mob bosses had known for a fact that Henry and Jimmy were involved, they would have been whacked.

I always thought that his death was only because of the disapearance of Billy Bats. The last time Billy was seen was at the bar and he had a fight with Tommy and then he just disapears. For the bosses i would think that this is guilty enough to get whacked. The other two didn't get killed because they didn't participate in the argument at the bar, on the contrary, they tried to calm things down and that probably played a big role in their lack of suspicion.

Paulie did in fact give up Tommy, but the reasons are a little more devious. Paulie had been sleeping with Henry's wife, started when Henry and Jimmy went to jail in the early 70's. Tommy, the sociopath that he was, tried to rape Karen, who obviously told Paulie about it. Paulie gave up Desimone to the Gambino family some time after the Bats killing, with that knowledge in the back of his mind.
@realazduffman

I honestly always thought that Tommy got whacked because the argument they had, plus the fact that he had a reputation for impulsive killing, made it pretty obvious that he had to be the one responsible for Batt's disappearance. Jimmy and Henry kept their cool in front of Batt's and his people, which left room for doubt over whether they were involved. I could be completely off but that was always my theory.

@@calburge4338 I always figured all Paulie would have had to do was once he heard from 'Batts associates that he was last seen alive in the bar was to ask the bartender what happened. Of course Batts' friends are going to fill him in on what transpired between him and Tommy and even though Batts' crew didn't see Tommy as a threat because Batts was a made guy Paulie knew better because he knew Tommy more intimately and knew he was crazy. By all rights Paulie was supposed to give up Jimmy and probably Henry because he had to know that Jimmy must have some part in the killing because of the fact that he was there and because he could kinda' control Tommy since they were close. Paulie also knows that Henry isn't a killer but he just as well could have ended up being collateral damage since he was with Tommy so Paulies decision was simple as far as what to do. You give up the pain in the @ss who deserves to go anyway and eliminate future problems which keeps Batts crew happy, while you don't mention your top two earners because that would cost you your percentage of their future earnings .

To me it's simple Jimmy and Henry didn't get whacked because they didn't try to be a "made guy " . Tommy made every effort to do it regardless of the consequences. The HUGE difference between the book and movie is Henry was dealing Heroin as well as coke, much less sympathetic and destructive, they cut out hills time in the Army trying to get out of the life, he was Airborne Ranger for the 82nd, and he discovered Army life and mob life was interchangeable. His one hustle was running a station wagon filled with cartons of cigarettes from North Carolina to NYC every weekend on pass from the Army.. good read highly recommended

MURDER! Does anybody know or have any solid facts about who/how Tommy was killed?? I read accounts about Gotti being involved, and Tommy being killed about unapproved killings, the sexual assaults, selling of narcotics issue with Paulie, etc. Henry Hill said, "I don't know how he was killed, all I know is he died slowly". I read an account stating that the executioners got Tommy drunk first at the phony ceremony, then they ambushed and beat him pretty bad, then held him down and sawed him in half while still alive. This to me seems plausible considering Henry's statement. Anybody have any input?

Hey henwy could have denied all knowing of Billy batts getting clipped, and Jimmy already wanted Batts dead. He basically scooped up all his loansharking operations and was coming to a head with him quicker than the movie suggests. The Lucchese family totally backed Jimmy because he was a ruthless earner who was guaranteed bank. Tommy was a loose cannon and more trouble than he's worth. If he was acting like that when he was an associate, could you imagine what he'd act like is he was made or was a captain with a crew of carefully chosen men to do his killing for him. Anarchy.

If the truth were known, Henry sold Tommy out to save his own skin. But he had no reason to tell us that for the movie. It wouldn't have helped sell the story. The Batts killing was June of 1970, the Lufthansa Heist was Dec. of 1978, and Tommy was killed one month later in Jan. of 1979. Henry was busted in May of 1980, more than a year and a half after Tommy bit the bullet. So there goes your theory that Henry's arrest saved him in Jan. of 79. The Mob wouldn't have waited a year and a half to make amends. Now, let's look at Henry. Henry was in the middle of the Lufthansa mess, and he was shaking like a leaf at all the killings that Tommy and Jimmy were pulling off at the time. Henry said, he (himself) had nothing to worry about, but we know he was torn up over the "bodies piling up all over." We see him voicing his concerns to Jimmy and Tommy at the very time Tommy was told he would "be made" (set up to die for Billy Batts). We later learn that Henry sold out his father figure (Paulie) to save his own hide. If Henry will sell out Paulie, he will sell out Tommy.

The way I always understood it was that Bates went missing that night and there were several witnesses to the altercation with Tommy. So after so long of him being missing, his crew assumed he was dead and given the time frame of his disappearance, they put 2 and 2 together and blamed Tommy. However when Bates was actually killed, the club was empty and there was no witness or evidence implicating Jimmy or Henry with having anything to do with it and being that they had such high standing with Paulie, the Gambinos couldn't just make that assumption of them.

I've haven't watched this video, but I've seen this movie enough times to answer the question. It's simple, Tommy killed Billy Batts, who was a made guy, and Tommy wasn't. In the mafia world, you have to have a sit down if you even want to attempt to kill a made guy. And at that sit down, you plead your case, and if the boss says NO, then you can not kill him. Tommy took it upon himself to just kill him which was a big no no.

@ ant boogie, not only did you not watch the video, you didn’t read the book either. It was about money. Every American likes money but those La Cosa Nostra guys and their wives LOVE money and most of their murders has to do with money.
@Ant_370

@moester75 but if we're just going by the movie (which in this case you have to bc the director, Martin Scorsese, just can't assume everyone read the book), it was bc Tommy killed a made guy when Tommy wasn't a made guy. Like I said in my original comment, that's a huge no no. If you watched the Sopranos, Johnny Sac wanted to kill Ralphy bc of the joke he made about his wife. But he went to Carmine and asked for a sit down bc he wanted to kill him. Carmine voted no, and Johnny Sac had to just swallow that anger he felt towards Ralphy and let it go. Bc if he would've taken it upon himself to kill Ralphy, Johnny Sac 💯% would've been killed

Even though not as severe as Billy Batts, Spider's death was also a serious issue for the mafia as he was a civilian and probably had friends, fiancee/wife or relatives to search for him after he permanently disappeared. Something like that only brings unnecessary attention and would jeopardize business. What mafia values most is the secrecy. Mafia executions, unlike what Hollywood portrays, is actually quite rarer than what most people think and only used as a final resort. He got whacked simply because he was too unpredictable.

The book "Wiseguys" goes into a lot more of the behind-the-scenes actions of Jimmy the Gent and Henry Hill.

The book explains this situation a lot better; Bats got out of jail and wanted his schemes back. When he went away, he had all these earning jobs that soldiers under him were running. But in jail he lost control of all those, and many of them were taken over by Tommy and Jimmy (and to some extent, Henry). He got out and wanted all that back and Tommy didn't want to share. Burke made so much money for the mob, they weren't gonna kack him. Henry was a nobody, a minor figure who was irrelevant to the mob despite how he tries to portray himself.

From Henry's comments about the penalty for killing a made guy, I disagree that they made any exception for him and Jimmy. I think the simple explanation is the bosses had no idea they were involved in killing Batts or helping to dispose of the body. When Tommy started the beat down, no one else was in the bar but them. Jimmy was shown keeping Batts there because he knew what was coming. But Batt's crew left so no one was there to see what happened. The other mafia guys though did see the blow up with Tommy and put two and two together it was him. I do not think the bosses even considered Jimmy and Henry were dumb enough to actually take part. All they knew was batts disappeared and the only person with motive was Tommy. That combined with his history of violence and his bad reputation and risk he would go down for something major due to how he was is why he was killed. I do not think "earning" had anything to do with it at all, especially since they were not made guys and Irish. I actually think they would have killed them first if they had the slightest inkling they were involved.

Tommy was killed because he killed a made guy without permission- and a lot of other things that caused Paulie more aggravation than satisfaction. Billy Batts was a soldier of the Gambino crew, and the Gambinos deduced that it was either Jimmy or Tommy who killed Batts. So a sit-down was done between the Gambinos, Paulie and representatives of the Lucchese family (whom Paulie was a part of). So in order to settle the dispute, Paulie offered up Tommy to the Gambinos, because they knew that Tommy’s psychotic, out-of-control temper was likely a factor- and because Jimmy was such a good earner they would rather get rid of the problem child. So the dispute was ultimately settled with Tommy’s murder and other likely financial gifts.

Tommy was killed not because of Bats: according to the book Wiseguy--no one in the Gotti family was sure he was dead. It was because Tommy as part of the crew that robbed the airport had his face seen when he took off his ski mask because of the heat. John Gotti went to Pauli and told him Tommy put them all at risk. He demanded Pauli have him killed, and Pauli agreed. (As Tommy's body was never found he was NOT given a closed casket funeral either.)

@Slim_45

What do you mean? If you’re referring to the film then a load of Billy Bates crew saw Tommy arguing with Billy and threatening to come back later. So when Billy went missing later it was obvious Tommy was involved. Even if Henry and Jimmy kept their mouths shut (which they did in the film). The other Gambino members would have told Paulie what really happened. And considering Tommy wasn’t just killed for Batts murder (although that was the main thing) he’d done other stuff too..so Paulie wasn’t gonna fight to save him. And the fact Tommy wasn’t a made guy.

Tommy was killed because he was out of control and he broke a rule yes, true that Jimmy broke the same rule, but Jimmy was bringing in huge amounts of money to them, and they gave him a pass, but Tommy was taking money away from them. and he didn’t respect the rules And he wasn’t even made yet. Look at how he shot the young guy just for nothing that was serving him drinks and serving them food at the poker game. And then the young guy got fed up and spoke back to him. Then Jimmy instigated it and then Tommy killed the young guy. You can’t just be a out-of-control maniac So just imagine how Tommy would’ve been if he had gotten made, that’s a scary thing to think about.

Just looking at Tommy in Goodfellas alone, it was pretty obvious that his transgressions outweighed anything that he actually contributed to to the organization. Yes, Jimmy was pretty wild himself, but he brought a ton of cash into the fold. Henry was low key, and he also paved the road for huge windfalls of cash with the multiple heists he helped set up. It wasn't until post-prison Henry started dabbling in drug use and trafficking that he himself would have landed on the chopping block. The moral of the story is that if you keep earning and don't cause too many headaches for the bosses, you'll probably be ok. Once you become a liability, it's over. One thing that stuck out with for me with how they whacked Tommy was that they didn't make a gruesome example of him (I"m talking movie, not real life). Yeah, it was pretty effed up that they went through the whole., "Your getting made!" thing, but I feel like Tommy would have figured out what was going on if they hadn't. Either way, even with all of Tommy's screw ups, the bosses just wanted him gone, when they could have done much worse.

My thought is that Jimmy ratted on Tommy, as if he wasn’t a part of it, so that he could take Tommy’s cut of the Lufthansa heist ..This is why Paulie knew to ask Henry at the cookout about what he knew about..because Jimmy had already told him… This is also why they dug up the body to relocate it, so that the discovery of the body would not be on land owned by Paulie Once Paulie knew Henry would stay steadfast on not knowing, any he felt he could allow the hit on Tommy, give Jimmy up the killer, and then Paulie knewhe was free to take Tommy’s cut of the Lufthansa also
@roybatty-
@roybatty- Жыл бұрын
You have to factor in the fact that Jimmy is Irish and not part of the family. Paulie already knew it was Tommy without even being told and Tommy's fate was already sealed. There was definitely a sit down and Tommy was scheduled to be killed to keep everyone cool. If Jimmy ratted on Tommy, that might have gotten him killed too.
