very excellent, i was not expecting such a good explanation...... yet you missed the very center point .. that attempting to describe it directly is fruitless. Kubrick attempted and succeeded at shifting this movie from plot points to impulsive or instinctual reaction for the viewers. Kubrick wanted the monolith to be considered mysterious. If you didn't understand the meaning of the monolith and the ending itself, you succeeded. Kubrick never wanted the audience to understand the 'monolith', because it represents an alien to us, and 'alien' is something unfamiliar, which we can't understand, which may also raise the point that the movie also falls under the hubris of cosmic horror.
