Fun fact: Lin explained that the Sondheim message over the phone didn’t satisfy the man himself (he said he wouldn’t word it like that) so he decided to write and record it the way he would have say it. That’s some great and unexpected cameo! Especially since he passed recently

That moment when you realize all the ticking was never about him making the deadline for his musical, it was about how his life expectancy was coming due sooner than expected. Or, alternatively: how we got to see all his blood, sweat and effort, only to have the timer suddenly go off right when we stopped listening for it.

That right there is why I can never bring myself to criticize RENT despite there being plenty of things about it that I could criticize. But how can I say anything bad about the legacy of a man who literally DIED for his art? I never speak ill of the dead unless they truly deserve it, and from what I can tell Johnathan Larson was a decent guy.

Different cameos in that one scene: Bernadette Peters (“Sunday”), Chita Rivera (“Chicago”), Joel Grey (“Cabaret”), Phylicia Rashad (“Into the Woods”), Brian Stokes Mitchell (“Ragtime”), André De Shields (“Hadestown”), Howard McGillin (“The Phantom of the Opera”), Chuck Cooper (“The Life”), Bebe Neuwirth (“Chicago”), Beth Malone (“Fun Home”), (“Rent” original cast members)Adam Pascal, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, and Miranda and Renée Elise Goldsberry and Phillipa Soo (Hamilton). FYI I can majorly nerd out about this musical

Also Tick Tick Boom was a one man autobiographical show he wrote and and produced after Superbia was turned down and before he started Rent. It was later moved to off Broadway after Rent took off where they added the two accompanying roles to stand in for Karessa/Susan and Michael/Roger. I’m the movie they based it off the off Broadway version to make it more appealing. All but the song “Swimming” are from that show, though I think it was just cut from the show. Also FYI: the person Michael is based on is still alive and healthy! I can literally go on and. On about this movie/ show

Oh the fact that Stephen Sondheim himself recorded the voice message to Jon on the phone because he thought the original lines on the script was not something that he thought himself would actually say... It's actually funny that you inserted that clip of Raúl Esparza in Company at the end, considering he originated the role of Jon off-broadway for Tick Tick Booms first run. He's the one you hear on the OG cast recording. ...also interesting is the parallels between Jon and Bobby's anxiety. It makes me wonder, with how close he worked with Sondheim, if Jon was influenced by Company for the premise of Tick Tick Boom

One of my favorite things I saw in an interview about this movie goes right along with what you said about Lin doing an amazing job adapting it. Lin said before they even filmed, they workshopped it for quite a while and treated it just like any one of his new musical projects. If something didn’t work, it was cut, if a song needed to be placed somewhere else they did it. So essentially, he did just what you said- took what was great about the material, but allowed what needed to be changed to change. May all future adaptations take note of such an amazing creative process!!!

Roger Bart also won the Tony for playing Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in 1999 and even thanked Jonathan at the end of his acceptance speech... in the movie, if you look closely during the first diner scene during the 30/90 number, you can see that the customers in the background are Roger Bart and James Nicola (the artistic director of the New York Theatre Workshop, where Jonathan Larson presented his original Tick Tick Boom monologue as portrayed in the film and where Rent had its Off-Broadway debut - they were able to film all the main performance stuff at the actual NYTW... the space wasn't initially available and they were originally gonna film it on a set but b/c of the pandemic, they were able to get the space and film there)!

I love how the way they end it. I didn't fully notice it until watching a couple reactions, but I think it's kind of ingenious. First, they cut off the final number just before the resolution note. Then, Jonathan is playing happy birthday, and stops playing right before the resolution note. Then, it shows him breathe in to blow out the candles and make a wish, but he never breathes out. To me, it symbolized Jonathan Larson's life. He died before the resolution.

"When are they going to turn this into a full musical" Funny thing this is a full musical already, it was released around 1990 at least that's what Spotify says but yeah it's pretty cool and has some songs the movie skipped out on.

No, the 1992 version is Jon’s one man show. The 2001 version was the off Broadway show

Sondheim is known for mentoring other talent. The movie is as much a homage to Sondheim as to Larson. Rewatching this movie frequently.

Well this was a great surprise!! This is honestly my new favorite movie, I love it so much… it made me cry! 🥺😭 Plus I discovered Andrew (I know you’re like how did you not know him before?!) I really don’t know lol! Now I found out about him, and then went down a rabbit hole of watching his interviews and checking out his movies… plus learning cool behind the scenes info about Tick Tick… Boom! I’m officially in love, and he deserves everything… give him all the awards lol! He has an incredible and charming personality, he’s handsome, has a British accent… what more could you ask for??!! 🤣😍🥳👏🏾🙌🏾❤️ PS: he’s freaking 38, which is so crazy to me because I at first thought he was 25 or something!! Plus his hair is amazing… plus he’s so good at doing different accents that when I found out he was British it was very surprising! Ok I’ll stop raving about Andrew now, but I’m a new fan so give me a break lol! 🤣😭 Anyway, thanks so much for this amazing, hilarious, touching reaction!! 🥰

I’m pretty sure that buzzfeed about all og the cameos in this movie and it’s facinating that almost every one in the diner and in the audience the first time we Stephen are all musical theater people. And the woman in the videos of John and Michael from school is lin’s old teacher

Look up "no day but today" on KZbin. It is about the life of Jonathon Larsen. I saw it before watching this and I caught a lot that had more meaning to me.

Hi hello I know it's been a year since you posted this video but I just stumbled across it and let me just say: the reference to Drew Gasparini's "It's kind of a funny story" took me so off guard you don't understand. That's such a niche reference and a show I absolutely adore and I just had to mention it haha.
