The movie is subtitled "From the files of Police Squad!" because it was based on a short lived TV series called Police Squad! (only six episodes were made). It starred the same cast apart from OJ Simpson, whose character of Nordberg was played by another actor, and was made by the same team that did this movie. Between Airplane! and this movie the team made another spoof called Top Secret!, which was a parody on spy movies and Elvis movies. It starred Val Kilmer in his first big role.

Police Squad series is very funny, some gags were reused for the movies, but not everyone. Also, there was a guest star in every episode, the joke being that they only appeared a few seconds at the beginning and were never to be seen again. And at the end of the episode, they'd simulate a freeze frame by getting the actors take a pose and stop moving, of course it was obvious because there was always something moving in the background etc...

This movie was before any of the OJ drama, and it was this movie that taught me about the profitability of controversy. When the murder of his wife became news this movie and it's sequel were a few years old, but when I went to the local Blockbuster with my parents the Naked Gun movies were showcased with several copies as if it were a new release, and all the copies were rented-humanity is shameless. Also, building contractors are always corrupt.

To "clear" someone means to prove that they're innocent. You might also hear the phrase "cleared of all charges", which means that all the criminal charges against someone were found to be baseless. Ricardo Montalban, the actor playing Ludwig, is most well known for starring the 1970s TV show Fantasy Island for seven seasons. He played Mr. Rourke, the owner/operator of a mysterious island where mostly wealthy people could go to live out their fantasies. It was heavily implied that there was a supernatural element as people often relived events from their young, appeared to go back in time, etc. The baseball player who tried to kill the queen is Reggie Jackson, a quite famous baseball player.

The were 2 Academy Award winners in that movie, George Kennedy, Best Supporting Actor for "Cool Hand Luke," (1967), and John Houseman, Best Supporting Actor for "The Paper Chase," (1973). And, on a historical note, British Queen Elizabeth did attend a Major League Baseball game - as a guest of President George H W Bush - on 15 May1991. However, it was in Baltimore, Maryland, at old Memorial Stadium. (The Oakland Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-3.)

The movies had a bigger budget/cast, but I really liked the TV series more. It was just a better format, imo. That whole short-lived genre was the height of comedy at the time, and being a silly teenager at the time, it really shaped our sense of humor, freed it up, basically validated all us kids with a weird sense of humor. This, Airplane, Top Secret (the best one of those movies), was a "whole thing" in the 80s. Weird was very in, and we LOVED it. The weirder the better. Anyway, the TV series was very short-lived, but just fit television more than a theater, because it felt more like they were twisting what we were used to more. A lot of new audiences literally would stumble into it unawares and were mind-blown. We would all talk about it over the lunchroom table in Jr. High, laughing our asses off simply TALKING about it. Great stuff, great memories.
