The original red queen also didn't have red hair, pale makeup or blue eyeshadow. She had short black hair in a weird bun lol. But they're referring to the red queen. The -cartoon- version is more known as the queen of hearts

This is cute and all but Elizabeth and Mary never met face to face. Ever. The first meeting was set for 1561 but Mary was on her way to Scotland through water after Elizabeth denied her permission to travel to Scotland through England. The second meeting was set for 1562 but religious war broke out in France. The third meeting was set for 1564 but Mary declined. She stayed in Scotland until 1567 when she had her son in 1566, James VI of Scotland who is also James I of England. She fled to England in 1568 and was instantly put in prison until her execution in 1587, all the while trying assassination plots on Elizabeth's life three major times in 1571, 1583, and 1586

My exact same thought while watching the trailer! We all know that nobody knows the exact way Queen E speaks or moves during her days, but Cate's portrayal sets the bar high - too high - for the rest of the actresses to follow.

So... Mary and Elizabeth never met in real life. And Mary was raised in France until her late teens, early twenties. She was far more French cultured then Scottish which is one of the reasons she had such a hard time ruling in a court that was much more “rough and tough” then the gilded French she was used to. This looks like it won’t be an accurate portraying of history and I’m only annoyed because I am fascinated with the queens (especially Elizabeth) and their relationship. But it’s Hollywood, not my British Monarchs History class so it’s whatever they want to do 🤷‍♀️ and it’s not like I don’t enjoy other movies that are completely false historically wise... I just happen to love this piece of history and it really doesn’t need any fabrication to make it more intense.

MicoDossun they did that on purpose. it looks ridiculous. She looks like a devil in some scenes because of it. This is because they have to go out of there way to make Elizabeth look like the evil villain and Mary like the good one. Looking at the trailer there is alot of historical inaccuracies so just watch for the entertainment side of it and not for historical facts.

Mary grew up in France and wouldn’t have had Scottish accent, and the two never met, but never let history get in the way of a good story. French actress Clemence Poesy played Mary, with a French accent, a few years ago, in a very good tv series.

Thank you! It took me a while to figure out why she was giving me some seriously creepy vibes, but then I couldn't unsee it. XD At the end of the day it's probably historically accurate, though. She used huge amounts of that stuff to cover her scars, so I doubt it looked as natural as the full cover foundation we have now and they use for her in most movies.

Well , it’s not as incorrect as you might think it is , there were black tudors AT COURT but they were certainly not senior members of council or grooms of the bedchamber , they were fools and trumpet players ......there is actually a fascinating book “Black Tudors by Miranda Kaufman” which addresses all of it .....completely fascinating - so anyway in short it is not inaccurate to have non Germanic people in the cast - but they are in the wrong roles !!

@@gutsjoestar7450 actually we can’t be sure what colour hair Mary head - contemporary portraits tell different stories .........as do contemporary descriptions .....however Francois Clouets portrait of her shows her with Bright red hair .......so it’s entirely possible . She was also (don’t forget a Tudor through her grandmothers side and therefore would have carried that gene) ........as for my previous comment about different races - your first comment suggested that it was incorrect to have them at all and that was what I responded to - I don’t have any questions regarding your amendment that they were in fact just a minority ;)

Actually, Elizabeth and Mary never met. Also, Mary spent her first 18 years in France, married to the French king ,so she would have had a French accent, not a Scottish one. Anyway, when did Hollywood ever bother with facts?

And nothing like actual 16th century accents were. But if they spoke Early Modern English with historically accurate accents, people would have trouble understanding them without subtitles. :) But they could have at least be accurate enough to acknowledge that Mary was brought up in France, and give her a French accent. (Not that the French accent of the 16th century was similar to the modern French accent.)

Tazza87 R fair enough but there's a difference between being able to speak a language and having an accent. If I spoke French as a native English speaker I wouldn't sound like a native French speaker. She did speak Scots but in this English language movie she is shown to have a Scottish accent which is incorrect as her formative years where spent in France speaking French ergo she would've had a French accent when speaking other languages like scots/english.

Feels very “Braveheart” esque here. Very clearly Pro Mary and Scottish catholics and Anti Elizabeth and the English. Plus taking a lot of liberties from history. Quite sad to see. Personally I think this movie would be a lot better if they decided to show Mary and Elizabeth as equals, with both their own strengths and weaknesses without showing one as clearly superior to the other. If you’re going to do a movie about a rivalry that really existed then do something like the movie Rush, show us the good and the bad of both, in history there are very very very few times where you can definitively declare one side as being good and the other side as being bad, the vast majority of the time there’s good and bad on both sides. Show that. Still, this movie could be good, I hope though that the end result doesn’t show Mary as this heroic beautiful amazing figure without any downsides to her at all and Elizabeth as this bitter jealous ugly figure that she’s clearly being shown here. Rivalries in cinema work best when the audience are invested in both sides and don’t want either side to lose, even in historical movies, if the movie does that then it will probably be great

Sigh..... I feel both fortunate and unfortunate here, because I watched a fabulous documentary about the relationship between Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I. It's so good, it's better than any other Tudor retelling I have ever seen. I urge those interested to watch it. It's called "The Body of the Queen" and it's the 7th episode of perhaps one of the greatest history documentary series ever, called 'The History of Britain' by Simon Schama. No acting, purely visual with voice-overs but it is amazing. I am really interested to see this film because of the cast. Unfortunately it is glaringly inaccurate, and you can tell from just the trailer alone. Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I never met and this is why their relationship was so interesting. Their fear of one another originated partly because of the fact that they had never met. Their imaginations did the rest, as well as gossip and whatever their advisors and spies told them about their counterparts. By showing them together, you immediately break that tension which is so crucial to understanding why their conflict was so compelling. Also, in the documentary, Mary is given a French accent, as she should, because she did not speak with a Scottish accent as depicted here; she was educated in France. So that's really distracting as well. Anyway, for those interested, PLEASE check out 'The Body of the Queen' by Simon Schama. I promise you will get a lot more out of it than any other piece of material you could read or see about this period. Truly gripping stuff.

Sakura ThornSickle thank you! I totally agree with this! I'll check out your recommendation. I was looking forward to this movie but the trailer shows me it's going to be a major disappointment. @sakurathornsickle5681
@sakurathornsickle5681 5 жыл бұрын
Ana Luiza it still breaks the tension though because they didn’t know what the other person truly looked like. In the documentary this is addressed as the historian talks about the two women wondering who was the prettier and it was undoubtedly Mary not Elizabeth. But Elizabeth only knew this through accounts and portraits which were highly inaccurate at the time. So the complication becomes is Elizabeth just imagining that Mary looks that way and if so, is the entire portrayal of Mary inaccurate because it is merely what Elizabeth is imagining? If this is the case then I rest my case but I don’t think so. I think this is supposed to be from both women’s perspectives.

Cate Blanchett is my one true Queen Elizabeth 🙌🏼 Also, Margot's accentuated makeup makes her seem like a clown instead of depicting the insecurities that Queen Elizabeth was trying to hide in her later years with the paste. Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth demonstrated that garishness very aptly...one was taken aback by the excessive white paste but it still seemed formidable and sort of reflected the queen's state of mind. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Nope, nor were they friends. Mary was always a viable option for ruler of England for Catholics who opposed Elizabeth and Protestantism. Mary also claimed the English throne for herself whilst in France, changing her personal coat of arms to reflect that claim. Not so long later, France signed a treaty that ratified Elizabeth as rightful Queen of England, yet Mary refused to sign it. She also plotted against Elizabeth whilst imprisoned in England. Who needs enemies with 'friends' like that, eh? It's just another 'historical' film about genuinely interesting figures that ignores history in favour of the whims and wishes of Hollywood. Shame really.

Hoswendt Personally I read history to find accurate accounts. Historical fiction, period pieces, and historical films either utilise the context of history to present an interpretation of truth about human life and the universe, or they are vehicles to express interpretations of historical truths. It is important to understand especially as a historian that truth and fact are connected but are not the same thing.
