Yes , as the water goes in you need someplace for the air to go out. Otherwise the air pressure will keep the water from going in and filling the barrel.

When the weather is nice, there's nothing better than walking around the farm checking on animals and plants with cool weather and a hot cup of coffee! :) I love that you are so focused on saving rain water! This is going to be a huge advantage in the future as climate change throws all kinds of surprises at us.

Coffee first and then after. LOL. Build a shed with a roof large enough to fill tank. Also, make a shed that does more than fill tank. I, too, used to run hoses down to paddocks when I was on a horse farm. I used splitters to connect hoses to all paddocks at once. Get better fast, Lorraine.

Before you invest in expensive lumber for building a rain catchment shed, may I suggest just putting four posts and hanging a turp or a plastic sheet between. You can make a hole in the centre and put a drum under it to catch rainwater. That will give you an idea of how large you have to make your catchment roof

Jason, Go get a 30 x 60 tarp and string it up to catch water. Tie it to trees or put in some posts to tie it to, then lay a long 2 x 4 down the middle of it to direct the water into the tank. Another way would be to bury the tank then lay the tarp out on the ground funneled into the tank. Make a video of the project and remember to thank the Pizza Guy. Much Love from Nikiski, Alaska.

You should've just got a John Deere Gator side by side and called it a day. A good side by side will do everything that little junky truck will do, and so much more, and most importantly be more reliable and not break down after 4 short months. You can get one with just as big of a bed, plus you can also get flatbed, or walled trailers to pull behind which gives even more room for hauling stuff. Also the side by side is going to do much better in off road conditions, some of these things will literally climb a tree. Now yes you can take these little trucks out on roads and highways much more easily, but I don't know why you would even want too, other than just for kicks and to get people looking and asking questions lol.
