I just got back literally last week from Montreal. We stayed in an apartment in downtown rue cotes de neiges near guy Concordia. Myself and my partner were visiting from London England. Originally I'm from the USA and there is something very North American yet very european and unique about this city. If my French was better I would certainly consider a move. People are so friendly as well.
@Juuzo0910 жыл бұрын
camsw4 So, we have lived very nearby, at Rue Mackay and Dr Penfield. Yeah, true...Montreal is fascinating mix of USA and Europe. Also French language was one the biggest reason why it would have been difficult for us to stay there for a longer time - of course then learning French would have been only choice. English vs. French language dilemma is somehow funny issue in Montreal - even though I like both of them (languages).

Montreal is a fascinating & unique mix of Quebecois/Anglo Canadian culture with a wide variety of multicultural minorities- albeit with a strong US and European influence. Truly, it's a world class city with a long & colourful history.

Really ? I'm from Sweden so I'm used to the cold. For me french and cold seems like a strange combination.
@peteradaniel8 жыл бұрын
+NordikFilm Ha ha. Yes but it's not the french that you find in france. Think of it as more wild west french. Log cabins and Davey Crockett as opposed to Baron Haussmann. It also depends on where in Sweden you live. Most of the inhabited areas of Sweden are surrounded by sea in some form, this keeps the temperatures warm. I lived in Gothenburg, Malmo and Umeå and I would say it's slightly more Umeå than the main cities (temperature wise). As I said, the closest European climate would be Moscow or Siberia. Temperature dropping very far into the minus 20's in the night and mid teen highs during the day.
@mirieleledhwen78918 жыл бұрын
+NordikFilm If you're Swedish, you won't fear winters haha But you might not appreciate summers, they can be very hot and humid sometimes (with random "cold" crisps). But yes, Québec seems like a nice place to be, very pretty city also :)

From a Montreal Area Resident: Welcome to Canada! If you go through NYC next time, don't usew the bus to Montreal. Instead book the amtrak Adirondack from Penn station into Central Staton Montreal. the ride is a scenic 11 hours. Also, Beyond Montreal you have about 4000 km. more of Canada to see. But you don't see a country in an airplane, so, next 3rd week in March, take your spouse and kids (preferably over 2 years age) and book the trip to Vancounve on via Rail from Central Station. Ut will take about 4 days each way, but very scenic, and you get a view of Canada you don't see from an airplane at 30,000 feet. Also, while it is winter in March in Montreal, in Vancouver it will be more like May (late spring) so you will need clothes for both climates. Then look there for the hydrofoil ride to Vancouver Island and tour Vicrtoria and the train up island (via 400 feet up on the way!)
@Juuzo097 жыл бұрын

I honestly have been considering moving to Canada. I've been living in France for over a year and a half, after having been born and raised in California, but I've become weary of where I am, and I'd like to return to the North American continent, while avoiding California, and the United States for that matter. I have dual-citizenship (French and U.S.), and I've been able to speak French fluently, with practically no accent, since I was a baby; I'm considered to be half-French, since my mother is French. So I'm wondering if there's anything I should know before I do decide on relocating to Montreal, especially education wise since I'd like to attend a French-Canadian community college, and then transfer eventually to a four-year university.
@Juuzo099 жыл бұрын
+cursivedubline5 Hard to give any good advices on that matter - I think that you are the expert in your own field (in education etc.). Personally if I had to do same choice it would be very difficult: I might select France. Canadians' personality is superb and they are very friendly, but work atmosphere could be better in France(?) - and summer vacations are much longer :-) I don't have enough experience about education systems between Montreal and for example Paris, so that I could comment on that :-/ All the best to you!
@cursivedubline59 жыл бұрын
+Juuzo09 I'm an expert in my own field? Well, I'm asking this because I'm not quite sure how the education system in Canada, more specifically, Quebec, Montreal, functions. Yes, I could go find this kind of information somewhere else on the internet, but I've chosen you so that I could directly ask a Quebec native on his thoughts in regards to this question. I'm only 24, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine finding work in Montreal isn't too hard. And when I mean work, I mean a low-paying part time job that I could do while I complete my years in school. It's difficult to say how the job market is here in France. France is a pretty large country, and the demand changes from city to city. You definitely won't find any sort of quality work in the Northern regions like in Nord-Pas-de-Calais or in the Ardennes. On the other hand, finding work in Paris becomes much easier, and it depends on what kind of work you're looking for. This is all somewhat arbitrary since finding work is circumstantial. I'm curious as to how I'd be treated as a Franco-American, also. Are there lots of limitations to what I can do, in general, by simply not being a Canadian citizen? Thank you
@cursivedubline58 жыл бұрын
+Max ime I think that's a matter of a opinion. I don't think you can make a complete judgment about a place after having only lived there for one year. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and I left almost two years ago. Los Angeles is a horribly polluted city. Along with Long Beach, Los Angeles is the most polluted city in California. As a matter of fact, the top five most polluted cities of the United States are all located in California. I do have to agree with you that San Diego is a great city; it's the best city in California. So I think you're basing a massive piece of land on one city. Unfortunately, San Diego is far from being a pure reflection of California as a whole. I don't know what makes you think California is richer. Are you personally rich or something? If yes, then sure, you can live anywhere you want in California! But economically, Jerry Brown's California is broke. Anyways, I'm just trying to see if Canada would be a good fit, that's all. It's a country that I respect. I respect the people. I respect their way of life. You'll find a ton of extremes in California, like you do in lots of places in the U.S., because the U.S. is a land of extremes. But California will take that concept further than anywhere else. I'm considering Montreal because then I could practice the two languages that I speak all of the time, and I'd be back on my home continent. If you have any sort of concrete reasons why that would be a mistake, or if you have at least some pros about living there, then I'm all ears. Thank you for commenting.

+cursivedubline5 Bonjour! I currently live in Montreal, and I have also been to Helsinki this year, and I find that the biggest advantage Helsinki has is a considerably better public transport system than Montreal. Everywhere I go around Helsinki is near a metro or a suburban train station served by frequent trains all day. Whereas in Montreal the metro doesn't extend so far and that the suburban trains are very infrequent (one hour per train at best, and one train per day at worst for Hudson Station on the Vaudreuil Line). Also Montreal has a terrible bus system and unless you live near a route serviced by new hybrid buses from the Mont-Royal or Stinson divisions, you are pretty much out of luck, because the old diesel buses from 2001-2013 are extremely terrible with terrible suspension, terrible seats, and no air-conditioning (riding it in 35 degree heat, can you imagine?), and the diesel engines emit so much black smoke and are so noisy; furthermore, many buses don't come on time and the wheelchair ramp on the old buses are often broken. And going to the airport is perhaps the worst of all; the same old diesel buses serves the airport route but you have to pay $10 instead of $3.25; if we pay that much we deserve better buses! And also buses in Helsinki ride better and there are no such thing as terrible diesel buses there. Whereas in Helsinki it's just a comfortable 25 minute train ride between downtown and the airport. Another big disadvantage of Montreal is that in terms of airline service, Montreal is quite underserved in terms of international connections. Domestic airfares are extremely expensive (Montreal-Vancouver in economy costs more than London-Helsinki in business!); and furthermore, since I often go to Hong Kong, it is a 30-hour plane ride through London and Helsinki on BA and Finnair, which is extremely inconvenient; Helsinki is one of the best connected cities in the world where it is only 9 hours from Hong Kong. Another big advantage of Helsinki is the fluency in English for most people; while I was there I never encountered anyone who spoke zero English, whereas many people who work for the Quebec government speak zero English or refuse to speak in English (I have talked to employees of RAMQ (ministry of health) and SAAQ (ministry of transport) and only ONE employee across both ministries spoke English) and even though I can speak some French, I don't speak it as comfortable as I would in English.
@Juuzo096 жыл бұрын
Good observations! I have to agree on to that Montreal Trudeau International Airport transportation issue: such a big airport would need a train connection to the city center. Gladly bus routes worked for us quite a well. Helsinki was lucky to get that airport-train connection (officially Ring Rail Line; terrible name though if I may say :-) ). I personally liked Montreal metros, but that might be because the apartment was located near the station and I totally understand it is so different if you live far away from those stations and they go so infrequent. I can't comment on busses, because we used them so little there :-/ I have to also agree that we are lucky here to have Helsinki Airport us our main international hub, because it offers cheap airfare tickets to all over the world. It's very common to get return ticket from Finland to Asia as low as 400-500 euros (from Finnair's official offers; finnair.com). San Fransisco, Miami or New York flights can be bought for as low as 250e return on Norwegian (that price without luggage/meal). Norwegian is low cost airline, so I personally would select Finnair. A nice tip for onward travellers inside Finland: many times it's much cheaper to book flight first to Helsinki and then buy separate flight (Finnair, Norwegian...) from Helsinki to Lapland (or cities like Oulu, Kittilä etc.), but those have to be booked well in advance because Lapland is very popular in January, February and March. Sorry, lost my point here :-) Nice comment anyway! Thx!

Neylena Hi, nice to hear about your plans moving to Montreal. Some tips: if u can learn some French language, it helps u a lot - A LOT! Even the traffic signs were mostly in French. You still will be just fine with only your English skills, but someday u hope that u would have opened that French language book :-) For easy transportation inside Montreal buy a metro/bus card; there's (metro)"Station Verdun" nearby your area I quess. Metro is a great way to travel - especially in the winter, because the station are warm and easy accessible. Get your internet connection/subscription ready early, because it can take a long time for them to get it installed/ready to be used. Bell is the MAJOR internet/mobile/phone operator - the big bad wolf :-) You can have good service from Bell if you are direct client/customer to them (paying your bills/subscriptions to Bell). Otherwise it can get little bit tricky (if Bell is just the internet provider, but u pay your bills to another company). Stay away from company called "TekSavvy" - terrible service.and crazy invoices keeped coming. "Videotron" can be a good option if that's available to your address. Paying a few extra bucks and can save you a lot of grey hairs ;-) If you don't have internet connection at the beginning u will find yourself regularly at the nearby coffees (free Wi-Fi) :) lOOOO-VED Mount Royal hill: all the hiking paths and parks. Nice place to relax and maybe spend your Sunday afternoon having picnic and just relaxing. If you are at downtown in the winter time, use tunnels under the buildings to move easily around the center area and worry only not to shake your mocca latte to your new shirt :-D In the summer Montreal is especially nice place and very liberal city ("The Village"-area etc.).And finally a must try from the menu: oven-baked bagels with all the stuffings inside.

Neylena donnnnt move there please do your self a favor!, i lived here my whole life and finally leaving for Ottawa, i mean, there is good neighbourhoods and jobs and such such, but most of them, 3,5-10 (lol) is bad, u NEED to learn french if u dont know it because it'll be a hassle everywhere u go.. i speek fluent french of course from living here, but truthfully.. ..it is not the best place... the people u work with, the neighbourhoods are packed with either junkies or imigrants, or the nicer environments and places to live would be packed with gay people like plateau and close to downtown like St-laurent street, OR better in westmount and the nice part of NDG.. but those places are of course costyyyy, so best of luck for you and hope you manage living here! if u need pointers of any thing like jobs, school, places to live ill tell u everything in details i know montreal like the palm of my hand :P my GF and i are currently so packed up with weight on our shoulders (more her) because she really wants to get into nursing and doesnt know french at all maybe a few words, and job wise its very hard.. if u want feel free to ask... inbox me

@Juuzo0910 жыл бұрын
Hi, thx for the nice comment! The rental prices vary highly depending on the area you live. Of course downtown of Montreal (including old Montreal) are the most expensive areas. Our first apartment on Mackay street cost about 975 CAD/month (year 2014; water included, electricity not) and it was one bedroom apartment (or in Canada they called it 3,5 bedroom apt.). But there are small apartments also in downtown that can cost about 600-800 CAD/month. Usually decent apartment costs about 800-1000 CAD/month; but that depends so much how high quality apartment u want. Of course u can share one apartment with somebody and reduce your monthly payment to 300-600 CAD/month.

Very nice video..very specific.....is it possible to find a simple apartment for $500 per month?
@Juuzo096 жыл бұрын
It's possible, but probably then the apartment is a bit far away from the center. If you would like to have a center apartment for that price, you most likely have to share the rent/apartment(bigger one) with another one. Few links for some apartment webpages: www.padmapper.com/apartments/montreal-qc , www.padmapper.com/apartments/montreal-qc and www.louer.com/montreal-cities+apartments+condos-for-rent/studio/?sort=lowprice

Usually those good studio/1br apartment prices are there in the 700-900$ (Canadian dollar) category. Someone correct if I'm wrong...

Why travel through New York?
@Juuzo097 жыл бұрын
One way ticket to Montreal was so expensive then, so we decided to go through New York, because there was so many carriers and cheap flights to there. Next time we might pick the easier route, because of all the hassle to go by busses etc. :-)

Best cities in America: 1. NYC 2. Montreal 3. Panama city 4. Vancouver 5. Buenos aires 6. Los angeles 7. San fransisco 8. Quebec 9. Miami 10. Brasilia

Nice list! Thumbs up for that. I haven't seen every one of those, but what I've seen "my best cities in America"-list would be: Las Vegas, Montreal, Rio De Janeiro (if the trafic wouldn't just be so noisy there in Rio). I think Vancouver has to be great, but I guess it's not very inexpensive city...and let's not forget San Fransisco; I have to visit that city at least once in the life time...so let's put SFO to the bucket list :-)

I'm a Montrealer, female, and I can assure you I fear nothing of walking alone at nighttime or anything else that could be "dangerous" (but truly, I have no idea what can be dangerous xD). Of course, there are 2-3 places you obviously don't go to, but I don't know where they're located and it's not like I'd search for them either :P So yeah, it's a very safe city.

I don't want to sound negative about this (and please don't judge me), but I would not recommend moving to Montreal. I've grown up here for seventeen years and I'm starting to have enough of it. I find some of the people could tend to be real assholes, and we're also known for one of the worst drivers. I sometimes get looked down upon because I am 98% English and have never been given the same respect as somebody whose first language is french. This is why sooner or later I'm planning to move up and out of here to Ontario. So for those of you wishing to move to Montreal, don't. You're going to regret it if you do.
@nicholasditullio70397 жыл бұрын
+leo Guatani I'm not trying to bash other people. This is everything that I have experienced. Like I said before, I'll be moving out of Quebec sooner or later because I have no desire whatsoever in learning more of the French language (I already have a bit of a hard time communicating with some of my colleagues at work). Also, I stand by what I had said before, I find some of the people that I have ran into when I'm driving, or when I'm at work or even when I'm biking around the neighbourhood are just so disrespectful that it's sometimes impossible to get along with anybody. You might have a different perspective on Montreal and I respect it. But this is my perspective, so I hope you respect my.
@nicholasditullio70397 жыл бұрын
+leo Guatani I didn't make the choice to move here. My parents decided to move here when I was two years old and ever since then I've been forced to put up with the French language and some of the extremely rude people that I still run into on occasion.
@nicholasditullio70397 жыл бұрын
+leo Guatani I'm not bashing French people. I'm saying in general, that some of the people are just so disrespectful. I have ran into some English Montrealers too, who are pretty rude and sometimes very aggressive. Part of the reason to why my French isn't that good is because I was raised in a neighbourhood that is predominantly English-speaking. But you were right about what you had said before, there are some immigrants that I have ran into in Old Montreal who tend to start acting disrespectful towards some of the French speaking citizens because of the language they are speaking.
@Juuzo097 жыл бұрын
We also were a bit surprised about the language atmosphere (English vs. French) Montreal was dealing with. We were always treated well - as English-speaker, but we noticed that there are some tensions about this. At the same time we totally understand, because now when we live here in Finland we have same language dilemma: we have two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. Most of the people do speak Finnish, but we have a minority that speaks Swedish - and we have mandatory Swedish lessons in the elementary school etc. There are also growing demand here to get rid of that mandatory Swedish learning and maybe teach some of the more important major (world) languages, but this conversation has gone forever here :-)

Canada and Finland has same kind of problems because of the harsh winter; many of ours roads need constant repair :-/
@andreraymond68606 жыл бұрын
It is decades of political neglect of our infrastructure. Many American cities are starting to feel it as well but the extreme weather here has exacerbated the damage in Quebec. The rest of Canada has done much better. These past two years the government has devoted much more of its yearly budget towards fixing the road system. Hopefully its not too little too late.

Yes! President Trump. I understand that Water is Life. No matter how poor we are, a drop of cristal Geyser is being sufficed to all human rights. Tap water is considered fast food. But these two items are not able to compare with each other when we love to live with intelligence; out door activities, parks' festival events, etc. So that, the intakes of the bodies are seriously aquired for protection and longevities by refinements. What can we do to help Montreal, Canada. President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump!
