Moving beyond Rolex? GO Sea Q Panorama Date

I’ve been into dive watches since I was a kid. I have to say, this is one of the hottest dive watches I’ve ever seen. I think I’d buy it on the bracelet, but wear it mostly on the fabric strap.

finally you got there after a long time :-)….the SeaQ (in my case the steel/gold with grey dial and strap) was my ‚pissed off with Rolex Submarine non availability‘ watch purchase and I have to say it is one of my grail watches now. It is so much nicer and superior to the Sub….and as accurate as far I can say. It is a big watch though, so not for every wrist…I have 190 mm wrist and suits me fine…Discount would be about 15-20% and that is what you find in C24…looking at grey market prices of Rolex which also is somehow unavailable. I disagree with your bezel action complaint….action is top level! IMHO it is a great, great watch….

Thank you, Marc, I think you did a great review on this. A few weeks ago I tried on the SEAQ in bicolor, and I felt it was a Rolls Royce of dive watches! It put my Submariner closer in class to my Sinn! Yes, expensive, but the value-for-money was obvious. The only thing that is giving me pause (apart from the cost) is it’s large (for me) size, but I am very seriously going for it! GO is still under most people’s radar, and that is a very good thing not only for the attention you mention but also for the price they are currently going for. If the cost was north of 20k I would not have been surprised. Rolex is clearly to blame for people like me looking at GO and Grand Seiko today. This is a classic business school example of a “brand” getting a head of its “product”. Can you say, Cadillac?

I owned a couple of Glashutte Original. They are to be seen in person to be appreciated. Rolex is supposed to be tool watch but at current prices we need to look at other brands.

It's an extremely nice watch: the caliber is second to none, the overall build quality is first rate, and it has an interesting design with a retro 1960s or early 1970s vibe. In fact, the design is based on a watch made by the nationalised GUB Glashütte in East Germany. BTW pronunciation is more like: 'Glass-hoow-uh-ta Orig-in-ahl' ("g" as in "gun")

I think the bottom bubble of the case back likely helps with comfort, and having it sit a bit higher for the crown and such.

Congrats Marc wear it in good health, I've got the same one, it is on another level than my Sub and Seamaster. Also I do find it wears like a 41mm or 40mm watch once you have it on. It is a solid piece of kit that looks sweet.

Hi Mark - great review. I had several Rolex including the submariner and SD43 (even if you look at my profile picture, I’m wearing my GMT Master BLNR) but I felt in love with the SeaQ panorama datum (black dial) and I can tell you easily… it’s just miles ahead from any Rolex diver . I adore the lume - it’s incredible outstanding and I love the panorama datum complication. The accuracy is even better than any of my Rolex, the extension system is also way better than Rolex. But as you, the Glashütte SeaQ Panorama Datum Wears a bit too tall and big for a daily (sometimes) … the perfect size would be the SeaQ 39mm but if they have added the Panorama datum and the movement as the bigger brother … it has been easily the best diver in the market (even top of the Blancpain FF) …

I own this piece. I also own a Sub. No comparison with a Sub. The GO is high horology, god tier! The Sub is a mass produced watch .Glashutte only make 10000 watches per year, Rolex make a million!! I do dive with this piece and I wear it on the canvas strap which gives this gorgeous watch a more tool like feel

I agree with you, it just doesn’t live you back enough to be excited about, as many of us are in love with Rolex. Love the watch and wish Lange did their Datum complication on the same plane. Btw, GO is the real Lange if you look into the history!

Also, they need to put the movement from the 43mm (100hr PR) into the 40mm (40-something PR) seaq. They already have 40mm models in the senator excellence line with the same calibre as 43mm seaq.

I just tried one on today. I have a 200mm+ wrist and my fears about it being too thick disappeared. The dilema now is whether to get the blue or the black. If Marc reads these comments I would love to hear his thoughts after 6 months of ownership.

I do like the look most of the time, but the micro-scratches that the mirrored finish will pick up, sends my OCD into overdrive. Don't the micro-scratches bother you at times??? I was between this and a no date sub, ironically. I thought the sub was more versatile being black and a muted dial. I also hated the PCLs on the SeaQ. Wonderful movement though.

I really do like the Sea Q and I go back and forth between it and the Fifty Fathoms. I just can't get over the look of the minutes hand on the Sea Q though. Not a fan. Thanks for the stellar review!

Glashütte panoramic is certainly a beautiful watch, the arabic numbers give it a unique definition, a signature that fits the bezel, although aome will say the numbers are oversized, they are actuatthe perfect size. As a watch that was made to be a daily wear and practical, it’s definitely not. If bought one, I wouldn’t wear it wear it every day. I own a Rolex GMT II coke dial 16710. It was order a few weeks prior to my college graduation. I wish i could wear it all the time but i dont. I did buy a Sinn U1 T-SDR which js my daily wear, practical everyday watch that goes under the radar.

It’s - I had the SD43 and it was very uncomfortable (the lugs ) but the Glashütte SeaQ Panorama Datum is more balanced and the lugs are nicely done

Your arguments doesn’t make any sense … we are taking about high horology … higher end kind of level … the Glashütte SeaQ Panorama Datum is more to be compared with Blancpain FF or AP diver … not Rolex, Omega level

The finishing, materials, and attention to detail are of a higher level than anything at the $6k level. Glashutte uses solid gold for the indexes, hands, and rotor, and does quite a bit of hand finishing, which is labour intensive and expensive. If you saw this side by side with an Omega you would realize that this is a much nicer watch.
