Hello! I'm an older generation, I discovered Berlin as a teen or rather West Berlin back then. Berlin has a very special vibe, although of course you could say it's a different place now, and I have a soft spot for this city anyway. When I was young, London had a similar artsy (rather than corporate) vibe, thanks to its incredible musical scene making (new ;-) ) waves around the globe. I discovered this video by chance, and wanted to say I really love it. At present, I'm living on another continent and I'm still in the process of adapting, but I've wondered for a while what it would be like to spend some time in Berlin maybe in the future, particularly in trying to get to speak German which is not only difficult for you, I can confirm. Despite the difference of generation, I feel quite close to your personality, and it reassures me that today's Berlin is not only for party animals, and one can appreciate that vibe without really partaking in it. I lived in London before where I am now, until the crisis, and other countries before that. I quite love discovering other countries that I'm fond of in depth by experiencing local life there. I totally understand your reasons to leave London for Berlin, because I actually quitted my former job for similar reasons with a bad burnout, although in my case it wasn't really London's fault but rather a toxic employer of a company (and not a British one anyway). You have convinced me that I would enjoy living in Berlin for a while, and I am very pleased to see that you found your happiness there. I don't know much about you but it's clear that health and well-being is at the forefront of what you do. I'm a Londoner. I visited Berlin twice. The first time I encountered the directness you spoke of and didn't get it. I really felt like I got the vibe a bit better when I went with my partner for second time 3 years ago and we absolutely loved it. Ever since then, I day dream about what it would be like to live there. All that you mention about London are feelings I have had about the city for many many years. I did the Erasmus Programme many years ago and on return to London the daily grind felt offensive to me in terms of the lack in quality of living for the average person. I tolerated this for years. In the meantime I made the most of my city. Loving it for all that it offers in the arts&culture, the amazing access to the anything in the world. The Brexit vote has done many things, too many to mention here, but for me it has made me question my place here in London. For me, it's not about the grass being greener. It's more about just simply living. I am glad things are working out for you there. Keep up the excellent work!

yep, the weather has been weird the last few years, totally agreed. btw the top temperatures have been close to 40 ° , which I am happy is usually not something that goes on for a longer period. but yes, for the capital of europe's most densely populated country, berlin is extremely chill and green, which is what I always turn out to miss whenever I'm abroad. oh, one note about your pronunciation. how to pronounce the "ch" sound is one of the most tricky things to get used to, especially for there is two ways of doing it and you simply have to know about the respective words by heart. though, you're kinda lucky living in berlin, for in the local dialect, as you may know, the "ch", as in "ich", is pronounced like a "k", so "ik". of course, that doesn't count for each word, but just to let you know it did not sound weird when you say "ik" instead of "ich", at least to a berlin guy like me ^.^ generally, berlin people are used to hear all sorts of accents, so you do not stand out that much. :)

Normally people leave furniture on the street because it’s Sperrmüll, bulky rubbish collection day. People put it out early so people can take it if they want. It could be that Berliners are just putting their stuff out when they aren’t supposed to. Some people in the cities put stuff out with a sign, zu verschenken, meaning help yourself.

Hello! Just booked my flights to Berlin and I will be moving back after spending 7 years away (I lived there for a year in 2015) and loved it. Can completely relate to a lot things you said about London - it has sapped my soul and I looking forward to reliving those positive experiences I experienced when i lived there those years ago. Oof I think it might be not as idyllic as it was 7 years ago! But there are still elements of positivity to be found amongst the bullshit (and now more people to stand up against the not so great changes!) and it still beats London for me. I personally think German is a necessity if you want to be accepted and you will be welcomed more for making the effort - so sounds like you will be fine! Ah it’s a bit of a chicken and egg scenario! I would say it’s more ideal to have a job secured before moving. That way, you’ll have a better chance of finding a permanent place to live (although it’s still very competitive even with a job just so you know!). The other option is to find temporary accommodation (like a sublet) via Facebook groups and then move to a permanent place in your name once you’ve got that solid proof of income and more settled. If you wish to avoid pronouncing the "ch" in "ich", one fun idea to consider might be to switch to Berlin dialect where it becomes "icke". Imho, legal insurance ("Rechtsschutz") is probably one you can skip, the same holding true for accident insurance ("Unfallversicherung"). Both are highly profitable for the insurance company, but not so much for you.

Nice vid; I'm from NYC and been Stationed in Germany (Heilbronn) back in the late 80's when I was in the U.S. Army. I have been back to Germany many times since I've got out and love it. I've have a lady friend that lives in Berlin that I've known since '96. I planned to move to Berlin once I retire from the U.S. Postal Service and rent one of her Flats she owns in 3 1/2 years. For example a Song from maiden called Hallowed be thy name.. Thy = dein. So back in the days english grammar was quite similar to german...

As a German it feels "normal" to learn a language before visiting a country that uses another language. I learned some French before my first vacation in France and some Greek before vacationing in Greece. But it certainly gets harder to learn additional languages when getting older. Telling your coworkers to talk German to you will make it easier in the long run

on the topic of how to speak german, its better to learn the sounds and not the words. i know it SOUNDS stupid to do it this way but it really helps if you just concentrate on how some sounds should sound, there are rly good youtube videos on that too. and when you can do the sounds, the words feel more "natural" and it comes easier. same for germans when they try to learn english and first time meet "th" xD

I think what people need to understand about London is that it can be 1000 different cities. It really depends on whereabouts in London you live as to what experience you'll have. In the East, for example, there are lots of canals, open fields, wetlands, and you're only a short tube ride from Epping forest, which makes for a beautiful autumn walk. There are also great connections to the coast from London, which offers you a bit of beach. The air quality in the city centre is wretched though. Having enjoyed living in both London and Berlin, I would agree a lot with the vibes portion. London is extremely high-energy, which is great in terms of having things to do, but the flip side of that is that it's very crowded, and can feel stifling. Berlin is very much more laid back, and the nature is pretty fantastic. I would disagree about the people though. London is just so much more diverse than Berlin. As a person of colour, you're never going to stand out in London. Whereas in Berlin, my friends and I had some very weird interactions with people despite (at the time) speaking pretty decent German. There isn't one attitude towards work in London either - it's a city full of NGOs, academic, and arts institutions and there are so many interesting people from all over the world working in those fields. The major problem with London is, if you don't engage with the corporate lifestyle, you won't really have enough money to survive. It has so much to offer as a city, but unfortunately it's out of reach for the average person. In terms of overall quality of life Berlin is much more affordable, and stable. London is amazing for the short term, or if you are very wealthy, but it's not good value for money.

There is a huge and super big difference between Oxford street and kürfürstendam or I can’t remember the place of massive high road shopping street in Berlin. Secondly if you haven’t got ticket when you use Berlin transport no worries just go through. This is of the greatest thing as well👍

I don't see a problem with your pronunciation. First of all, don't forget that you've only been learning the language for 3 years, so your level is much better than someone who has spent much more time here. If someone, at least the people around me, notice that you are trying and making an effort, and not falling into the habit of taking it for granted that the person you are talking to is speaking English, then everything is super fine. That's how it is with me in English, it's not my native language, so I make mistakes, I'm aware of that, I just try to make it understandable somehow. All the best to you!

You must also register for a German driving license within three months of registering with the Einwohnermeldeamt and your UK or US license becomes the much sought-after Deutscher Führerschein. If you fail to do this, deregister for a couple of months and then reregister. It costs about 70€ - maybe more!

I think it always turns out like this or like that depending where you really are in the end (which district, at what company, and with what people you are connected) cause I know someone German in your age who left Berlin, because she said, you constantly need to show off how cool and special you are, she said, she never could be herself and relax and always bumped into false friends. By the way I find it really problematic that sooo many young people make videos about how great and better than ... Berlin is, because that attracts thousands upon thousands of young people from all over the world, who watch this videos, so the housing market will get even worse like it develops anyway, the apartment prices will shoot up higher and higher or you just won't find any apartment anymore.

In Munchen and Frankfurt salaries are at least so high as London ,if not higher. Again,as yu know well,only top job and managers are high pay in London.Many youngers get maxim1500 /1750europounds a month which is well under german medium salary

Hi, I might be a bit late to this but maybe someone who considers moving to Germany will need the encouragement! :) Most people our age will admire your bravery and motivation. I think it's amazing that you learn a different and difficult language, moved to a another country and get along with natives so well! I want to move to the UK in a few years and I'm scared shittless to be honest haha! Germany has a really great social system etc. E.g. Healthcare! Everyone gets treatment, nobody has to be homeless...if you cant provide for yourself it will be paid for you. I quite like Germany actually but I dont feel completely at home here...I feel like I'm British inside ;)

your german sentences were fine besides some minor issues when pronouncing S-sounds and CH.. and even the Ick (i) with a hard CH instead of Ich with our soft CH fits perfectly with the berliner accent ;) no need to hold back.. i hope you still feel happy here :) p.s. the only mandatory insurance is health insurance, all other insurances like liability insurance or household insurance are voluntary.. many people simply have them for security reasons.. let's say you have a washing machine in your flat and it breaks, water everywhere, so much that it goes through walls and the floor.. without liability insurance you are screwed, because you have to pay for all possible damage at (or is it "on"? my english sucks xD) you neighbors stuff and all the damage the house might take out of your pocket... without household insurance you are then screwed once more, because you have to pay for all your damaged stuff out of your own pocket as well....

Berlin is great if you wanna party a lot, have zero responsibility and not grow up. It defo has a time-frame and is super transitory!! It's like a giant child's playground for adults. However, when you want to do serious stuff like start a business, think about retiring, and estate planning, the German bureaucracy and wonderful tax system hits you and you realise that it's quite restrictive.

I been living in London 12years ago.Now english salaries is even lesss than 1500pounds för many young people(not those with 20year experience thy may have1900punds per months after tax)but för many english salary it is lower ,getig lower plus petrol and food shortage in UKafter Brexit.Thats why yu many are coming here .I m living in sweden,20.000english moved here last 2years alone!!!I think will be 400.000english soon in Germany.There are already irish scotish from last decade came.
