It is very smart of you to hire an agency to do all the pet’s moving. It’s a very delicate thing with all the documentation, timing, vaccinations… I moved to Japan with my 2 cats and Gosh!! It was so stressful but I succeeded!! Good luck to you all !!

@@squeakco I moved to Japan from Thailand and it’s not mandatory the use of an agency. Japan is one of the most strict countries for the importation of pets, so I prepared in advance. I was in constant contact with them for every step, so I have time to fix documents before leaving in case of mistake and so avoid “surprises “ 😁. That’s why I highly recommend the use of an agency (maybe that’s why it’s mandatory for other countries). It’s tough.

My sister used an agency to transport her dog from Canada to Australia and while it was expensive it was 100% worth it. Her dog went from Vancouver, B.C. to L.A. and then L.A. to Melbourne followed by a 10 day quarantine at a boarding facility. I think you will be ok because it's winter so it won't be too hot to transport. My sister moved 6 weeks before her dog because they only transport during certian months because of the heat.

I am Korean, and moving to Texas was a huge adjustment for me. I know in comparison to Koreans, people in Texas are much bigger and louder, so it was a little scary. But once I got past that, the culture is very friendly. Complete strangers will come up and start conversations with you like you are old friends, so don't let that take you by surprise. I've never been to Sweden, but I have traveled to Norway a few times, and I found that to be a noticeable cultural difference. I am very excited for both of you; it will be quite an adventure. And I hope that you enjoy your time in Texas.

Be warned that even with insurance, you still need to budget for health expenses. My very good insurance covers 80/20, meaning I'm responsible for up to 2k out of pocket before insurance even kicks in, and then I pay 20% of most costs (er/ambulance, etc) up to an out of pocket max of 5k. Don't want you to be surprised as it can be shocking when you see your portion of a 40k 1 night hospital bill .

This. So much this. Also, some universities have great health insurance and some have AWFUL health insurance. Just because the uni offers it doesn’t mean it’s good, and people may not supplement with additional insurance because it’s SO expensive. Also, being married to someone from a universal healthcare system, 100% the lack of routine preventive care was an utter shock for him.

Im Danish and I lived in Texas for a bit. I loved the weather, so nice and warm. The people in Texas are very polite in general, perhaps more than we are used to as Scandinavians. The only thing I found a little tricky was remembering you need to tip and that the price on the tags in stores doesnt show the taxes. I really enjoyed my time in Texas and I hope you guys will too!

Really good points. I forget people from Europe don't tip, but now that you mention it as a server, I found that to be true. In a restaurant, 20% is the norm, but an go as low as 15%. And the amount and what items are taxed are different in each state, and possibly city. So learn your taxes.

I’m so excited for your move and experiencing the US! I had a friend in high school that came over from Sweden and she was pretty shocked by a lot of things and was super quiet for months which I don’t blame her hahaha! I remember when we had a bonfire she said Americans were confusing and judge a lot and Swedish People don’t care about that stuff (teens at the time) 😂😂 but I honestly loved watching her experience things she never had and finding out the little things that were so different between countries. I'm born, raised, and currently live in Texas and so proud of it :) Welcome to the Lone Star State! It's hot here, it's humid, we LOVE food and booze...a little too much, and we (for the most part) are super friendly. Sometimes Texans are a little loud and obnoxious, but we're harmless and it's usually good fun. I promise Texas can be more sophisticated and lux than people outside of Texas assume - we've got lots of hidden gems.

I briefly skimmed the comments and want to echo 2 in particular. The housing market here in Austin is crazy and, you will need a car! Public transportation in Austin will not be what you may have in Sweden. The tacos will be a whole lot better in Austin than in New York! I find it sort of prophetic that your dog’s name is Tesla and Austin is now the headquarters for Tesla! You will have moments of being homesick but both of you seem to be adventurous, pioneering personalities so I think this adventure will enrich your lives. Also, getting a Texas driver’s license can be frustrating. The fact that you have visas in your passports will help you get them faster but, if you don’t have one, you might consider getting an international driver’s license. I have been doing employment based immigration for almost 30 years and this always comes up with clients. Technically, it is not part of the service legal counsel is responsible for but with the effects of Covid, clients have experienced a lot of frustration. You might want to contact whomever was assisting you in you visa process to see if they can assist you. ❤️🕊

The cats can travel as your carry-ons as long as you clear it with the airlines. It's also entirely possible that Tesla can fly in the cabin too. If he meets behavioral standards, gets his vet clearance, and you get someone else to travel with you... he just needs his own seat. PLEASE don't allow any of the animals to be shipped as cargo. They need to fly in the cabin, whether its a flight specifically for animals or not... the cargo bay isn't temperature controlled or pressurized.

Angie, there are companies that do corporate and relocation rentals - sometimes they’re apartments or houses, other times they’re more like hotels. People often use them for moves like this - my ex-husband and I used them when moving between states, when we were unable to travel to find housing ahead of time. We lived in the condo they rented us for three weeks, on a week to week basis, while we looked for housing. That might be an option for you - and the university might have a service they recommend for this. (Definitely ask them! Ask about any/all help they provide. I’ve had to coach several of my husband’s postdocs on asking for these sorts of things because they just figure they’ll do it on their own, and assistance is often available.)

I shipped my dog through cargo from Mexico to Oregon and she actually had an overnight lay over in Texas where they were supposed to feed and walk her. There was food taped on her crate but when I got her in Oregon the food was completely untouched, she smelled horrible, and she drank so much water as soon as i put it down for her, which makes me think that they didnt feed or take her out. When I moved from Oregon to Hawaii it was much better since it wasn't through cargo, but just be aware that even though they should take the pets out, they might not, definitely have food and water ready when you pick them up just incase. Also, if you and Heather need tips on where to go in Mexico I totally got you guys 😏

When my mom moved from Arizona to Mexico, her 3 dogs had a layover in Miami. We suspect that they also weren't fed or given additional water. She was pissed, rightfully so. So I second the advice of having food and water available as soon as you see the animals. Hot tip for transport of the animals have their water frozen in the bowl and it won't slosh all over the place while they are being moved and will gradually defrost. Shipping an animal is always scary, even if you are using a pet transport agency.

I live in the USA and you can rent hotels they will let you have your pets. Also you will have to get a car or Uber to get around. You can't walk to places like in NY. It's a different kind of hot with humidity but good luck 🤞☺️ yes people in USA love the guns. They love to hunt and go to shooting ranges. I'm from NC and it's a beautiful state with lots to do. I love living here. Also y'all should have life insurance on each other to be honest in case something were to happen you don't want to be stuck here without the other person

Texas is HOT 5 months of the year, pretty much May through September. Other than that our temperature's are mild to moderate during the other months. The coldest months are generally January and February. Of course when I say cold it will most likely be comfortable compared to what you are use to. I am excited to see how you adjust. Good luck to both of you and safe travels. Most people here do have guns but most do not open carry. We don't like to advertise our wares. ;-)

So glad you are taking your fur babies with you! My husband is in the USAF and we have moved twice already in the last 5 years- Most recently from our home state of Texas to Hawaii. The cost definitely adds up with vet visits, certificates, vaccines, boarding and transportation. I can say getting our bunny moved to the island was the hardest part but worth every penny to have him with us. I went to school at the University of Texas in Austin and loved it so much that I hope we can retire there. It has a great mix of EVERYTHING. Good luck!

Hi Angie! I'm about to write a little guide based on some things that you said that I think you would want clarification on. I really really want you to be prepared and not surprised by things that you learn when you move to the states. ❤️ This is coming from someone who also moved to the US from another country almost 20 years ago, and spent the first 12 of those years in Texas. 1. Austin is one of the most eclectic and liberal cities in Texas. I honestly think you'll be able to find like minded people with your open and positive personality. Not to mention you'll probably even see people with makeup as bold and colourful as yours 🤡💕 The slogan of the city is "Keep Austin Weird" which I think fits the energy really well. Austin is a liberal gem in the conservative south. 2. I thought it was funny that guns was talked about so much in this video, and I was honestly really surprised when you said that you thoughts guns were prevalent everywhere in the United States. While yes guns are all over the country, there is a large amount of people who are against the mass distribution of guns because of how prevalent gun violence is in especially schools. Texas as a whole is on the side of wanting to keep guns accessible and unregulated, but Austin is not a city where that will be apparent. 3. In general Grad Student health insurance is great, but make sure to contact your health insurance provider to know the details of what is and isn't covered, and also what your co-pays will be. I say this because you mentioned being used to free health care, and want to make sure you can get everything you need like an ambulance, however things like getting an ambulance is notoriously not covered by health insure in the United States and typically is very expensive. 4. There will be a lot to learn but honestly I think you'll be in good hands in Texas. Housing is relatively cheap for how much space you get, there's a lot of cool developments and technology happening there. And while the food can be really really yummy. I think you're going to enjoy it 🥰

I hope everything goes well with the move! I've only been to Dallas since family lives there, but it's nice. Never seen anyone carry a gun. The noise fee that some places have there is wild to me though. People can file complaints with apartment management if you're too loud and you get fined. My aunt makes sure we only talk in a whisper after 10 pm if we visit.

Our family moved to Romania (where my husband is from) from Singapore and it was quite complicated. Mostly because we have been living in Singapore with my mum since last March but our home was in Malaysia. We had taken a trip to Romania in spring to visit my husband's parents and in the middle of it, Malaysia went under lockdown due to Covid. We couldn't enter the country since neither of us was a permanent resident or citizen there. I'm Singaporean so we flew to Singapore and stayed with my mum hoping the borders would open. Meanwhile our dog was stuck back in Malaysia and we couldn't find a way to get her to us. We did have someone looking looking after her in the meantime. Fast forward almost 2 years later and we decided to just fuck it and move all of us to Romania. It was an easier process to get her approved to be moved here than to Singapore. We needed a pet transport company to get her vaccinated and her papers in order for a transit permit through Singapore. But the rest was simpler. No direct flights to Romania from Singapore though, so she had to suffer through 2 flights in the cargo hold of our planes. The good thing was, we got to see her for the first time in almost 2 years at the airport before our flight. And we collected her from the airport in Bucharest once we landed. She's 12 years old so we were really worried about how she would take the flight. She's a tough dog though, and other than being really scared, she was OK. Best of luck for your move. Hope your whole family gets settled safely in Texas.
