I LOVE the message you brought: "Normalize not knowing everything. You will figure it out along the way" wow! I had to replay that part because it's so inspirational to me. Sometimes we feel stressed when we don't know certain things, because we feel like we have no control over them and we don't like that feeling. But it's so nice to explore, learn new things and go out of our comfort zone. 💖

Welcome to Texas! I've lived here my whole life and have a suggestion about grocery stores. Shop at HEB. Especially if there's an HEB Plus in the area. They usually offer the cheapest prices and lots of 'made in Texas' products. My family tries to eat mostly vegan and they offer a ton of options. They often label the price tags too to distinguish if an item is vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, etc. Chipotle is better than taco bell and offers vegetarian options. Whataburger is definitely better than Wendy's.

I only moved from New Jersey to Texas and it was a culture shock. It’s been 30 years and I still don’t understand sometimes 😂 A few of my favorite Austin eateries are De Nada Cantina (shrimp taco 🤤), Bouldin Creek Cafe is all vegetarian and fabulous, Citizen Eatery is all vegetarian and have an asparagus salad that is yummy, Jack Allen’s Kitchen has the best guacamole, and the Soup Peddler is lots of soup. Plow Burger is a vegan food trailer with a great burger (not healthy, just good) and for fast food P. Terrys has a great veggie burger. That’s all I can think of at the moment. Also, Austin is definitely in Texas but, it’s not like the rest of Texas. As a matter of fact, a lot of Texas doesn’t like us because we’re too liberal. I’ve gotten eye rolls and sighs of annoyance in other parts of this state when they find out I’m an Austinite.

I'm originally from a small town in Portugal and you can easily walk everywhere in under an hour. I did live in London for many years and although London is very big, it's pretty walkable. So when I went to NYC the first time, my dumbass really thought I could walk from Brooklyn to Central Park in an hour tops. Took me three hours. Was a nice walk though.

@@moriganna67ify my cat had kidney failure and was in a bad way. After three different vets one finally prescribed a new medication and it completely changed his life for the better. I can’t even explain in words, the change was unbelievable. I even remember the name of the medication because it was like magic to me. It’s called ipakitine and comes in a small white round tub with a bright neon orange lid. Not sure if you can ask your vet for some. You just sprinkle a small level scoop on their food. I didn’t think he’d touch it with that sprinkled in but they don’t notice it. Unbelievable transformation and he even stopped all the peeing everywhere too. I can’t recommend it enough. It is the one place in Texas I would consider visiting or living. Pre-pandemic, Austin played host to a huge music festival you may have heard of called South by Southwest. It's on my "Bucket List." In the US, Austin is considered a "Liberal Bastion" by a many calling themselves "Conservative." That is why you see stores banning open carry and the like. I grew up with firearms, hunting, etc. and qualified with the M-16 years and years ago when I was in the Army. It is my familiarity with firearms that keeps me from seeing to eye to eye with most American gun nuts. Was stationed in W. Germany "before The Wall" came down. Loved it and often wish I had stayed there when my enlistment was up. As usual, more than you need to know. Do know that I love you, your husband, and pets. Wishing you a wonderful adventure and nothing but the best.

The no sidewalks thing is weird to me too and I live in the US! But I live in Chicago and we have sidewalks EVERYWHERE. We are a city with tons of people and public transportation. Our suburbs have no sidewalks and I don’t drive so I avoid them lol.
@VillainessVamp
@VillainessVamp 2 жыл бұрын
I'm from Oklahoma. Here (and in many other areas of the u.s.), we don't have much public transportation to speak of, and areas are very spread out. Bike riding is done more for sport or recreation rather than for transportation. The same can be said for walking. Oddly, we have dedicated areas for those activities, lol. We take our bicycles to the lakes and ride, or we walk on trails. I know! It sucks! You have to understand how spread out and remote some places are. Thankfully, many cities are requiring sidewalks to be included on any new construction or revisions.

I live in a Chicago suburb and we do have sidewalks but there are way more areas here that don’t, as opposed to the city. We mostly have them where we need them but you can’t just assume there will always be on on every single block or area. Chicago is a grid so it’s easy to have sidewalks everywhere.

Keep in mind that Texas doesn’t have a state income tax like a lot of other states in the US which is probably why his checks aren’t that different. Austin has some wonderful areas like Barton Springs, zilker park, and redbud isle for nature areas. Also Austin is one of the most liberal state so it is so different than other cities like Dallas. You can choose low calorie, low carb, paleo, heart healthy, vegetarian, vegan, etc. Then you choose the recipes you want and it makes an ingredient list - then you unselect the ingredients you have and you can choose pick up at store from HEB. Just a thought about the cup holder thing (and maybe car size) - a lot of people roadtrip and actually I think even more so in times past, would drive great distances across the country, perhaps to visit family or vacation or whatever. Not having to stop (or perhaps even not being able to) every time you need a drink on a 12- hour drive is probably why this convenience came about. As for cup holders in grocery carts - 2 things: was there a Starbucks in the store that you were shopping at? If so, that's probably why. Otherwise, parents with kids who have sippy cups need a place to put them while shopping with their kids.

I have a friend who is American but lived in Germany for 15 years. The way she explained the car size, cup holders etc is the lifestyle difference, and roads. In Europe people don't spend as much time in their cars. Before the pannini I commuted an hour to work each way every day. Then with kids you need room for them, their friends, their school stuff and all the sports gear. When my kids were in elementary and middle school I spent at least 4 to 6 hours a day in the car so for us our car is an extension of our home and we want to have it large and comfy. Then we have larger homes so we need to buy things like mulch, plants, etc. fairly often and we like to shop at wholesale clubs like Costco and Sam's which need bigger cars to fit things in. Same with diy projects that mean shopping at Lowes, Home Depot etc. Then we like to road trip. Next month I'm taking my daughter and niece on college tours and we are hitting TN, TX, KS, and MS in a week. As soon as my friend moved back to the US the first thing her and her husband did was get a large SUV and a large truck. You may end up getting spoiled if you start road trips with a nice SUV 🙂

As for big cars… I used to have a small car, then when I had my first son, it was almost impossible to fit his car seat into it. If we needed the stroller too, it took up the entire trunk. Packing any luggage became difficult, and if we went anywhere with our dog (a Great Dane) it was very difficult to all fit. We upgraded to an SUV, and I’m about to install a third car seat into it. All three of my kids will require car seats, and they really take up a huge amount of space. But now, my car has room for all three and the giant dog 😂 Oh, and for whatever reason, the car seats for my toddlers each come with two cup holders 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

Where I live, there aren't any mandates (though a few people do still wear masks), samples/testers are out for people to try, and there are definitely people chilling in target with their starbucks! As someone who has lived in the U.S. my whole life, I didn't even know where you could buy stamps (besides the post office) until I got to college and had to buy stamps for myself. Have you tried Chex Mix yet? People will make a batch for parties but it is also available premade in the bag. I think the stores with the cupholders in the shopping carts have coffee shops, they hope you will buy a drink and then spend more time shopping. Free hands buy more things. Also, don't be afraid to ask the cashier about stamps or other things you are looking for as they are usually local. Glad you are having fun in the US, and congratulations on your new collab!

We were transferred from Austin to Brussels, Belgium for several years & one of my biggest shocks was NO cup holders in our cars! The company gave us a gorgeous Mercedes to drive while we were there & it had no cup holders. We bought a 2nd car for me (BMW) & it did not have cup holders either. It was very weird for us. LOL Also stores closing at 5PM or closed on Sundays made us have to plan well. Esp for groceries!

I am from Belgium (Antwerp) and most cars do have space for cups/bottles/drinks. Those spots are usually behind the clutch of the car. Most stores are open till 6pm or even 7pm on weekdays in Antwerp and on the first Sunday of the month you can shop from 12pm till 6pm. It's called koopzondag (shopping Sunday). Smaller supermarkets like Proxy Delhaize or Carrefour Market are open on Sundays till 8pm as well but they are more expensive, which is ridiculous.

We take all of our camping gear, drive 7 hours, stay in the same state, and camp for a week. We also have boats, RV’s, four wheelers, ATV, snowmobiles etc that we need to tow with our big cars. Another grocery store to try that have more organic options is Sprouts. Not very many in town but they have great veggie items. Of course it’s a little more expensive then your regular H‑E‑B. But I do really like Sprouts just to get a few items. A home store place to try is called At Home. They have all kinds of furniture and decor that have better pricing than say Kirklands, which is another nice home decor place it just has a strong store perfume. Lol! Austin also has a lot of “mom and pop” restaurants that definitely have a lot of vegetarian options. “Mom and pop” is a nickname that basically means an independently owned. But there are so many stores, the one that comes to mind is Brunch Bird. So good!! But you can google what options are available near you and I’m sure a lot will come up. Sorry to write so much! But I love watching your update videos and I am just thrilled that I can try to help anyway I can! ✌️

In the south you need big cars a lot more than other places. We have hunting, fishing, and lots of recreational activities where you need a 4 wheel drive or bigger vehicle to do those. I think big cars are common here because a) women with kids needed more room and b) men have a napoleon complex and want a huge truck to compensate and c) men with jobs that call for a large trunk or truck bed is fairly common. My boyfriend is looking at a small SUV right now because he just likes the look of it. Most roads accommodate them so it’s a matter of the aesthetic pretty often

What you get in the states is directly linked to the farm subsidies and overabundance of certain products. Dairy, Sugar has enormous amounts of products in the States, and thus they fold that into everything they can. It also makes products more desirable and addicting which creates demand and generates more money; they can use less quality but make it taste better with Sugar, as an example. Buy stamps at a Post Office or at the cashier at someplace like a Grocery Store; rarely are their signs, but if you ask as you check out, they can sell them to you right there.

The cup holders, big parking spots and drive-thrus are conveniences or small luxuries here that make you feel like you’re getting treated or your monies worth. Like “oh the groceries here are a little more expensive but the I like the environment so I’m willing to pay more.” And yeah we don’t like to be thirsty haha. If you have room, get a hard plastic kiddie pool for him to lay in. I swear cars are bigger in Texas cause you need them to survive a wreck since everyone drives like 85 on the freeway and I'm not sure half the truck drivers are able to check their blind spots before lane changing. I live in the Northeast now and have a small car. I wouldn't want to drive any of the major Texas cities in it. The nice neighbors are also a southern American thing. In New England, I've had neighbors not only never speak to me. When I knocked on their door to let them know they left their lights on in their car, they talked to me through the door. SO weird.
