@@GCFD That was a slick paint job on that pipe, My father brought home a fairly big handheld (his friend owned a local pawn shop) when i was a kid, i rebuilt the carb & got it running & used it for a few more years, sold it for profit in a yard sale.... Something as big as that walk behind is a major find & certainly worth fixing as long as the rest of it can be salvaged etc etc.

I found out when you paint the white PVC the UV light doesn't damage the pipe as much as when you leave it bare. I've seen large 24" water pipes which have been exposed for a long time start to blacken. For all the pipe I have exposed, outlets and garden watering points, I have now painted them with a spray plastic paint with a large amount of UVC resistant solids. Makes it look nice and it won't burn.

If it is a drywell, the problem I see is it filling up with leaves and debris from the roof, clogging up the well. IF the terracotta pipe drains to the other side of the fence is tree roots growing in the pipe creating a clog and add the tree leaves and debris adding to that clog, (just like tree roots in tile sewer piping). This new piping is the best solution and brilliant idea to integrate a wider channel drain into the gutter drain to keep it clean. Good thinking.

I currently have that same channel drain, did that one have a 1.5 inch drain inside the channel drain and then drop into another pipe? That's what I have and when we get a lot of rain that small hole in the channel drain gets overwhelmed. Re-doing the back yard and getting ride of that channel and planning on replacing with something that you are using. Is that a 4 inch PVC at the exit, and how wide is that channel drain?
@camlendrim76092 жыл бұрын
Question Shawn….. my son plans to place small stones over channel drain at bottom of downsloped driveway to keep leaf debris from clogging channel slots. My guess is that you will advise to not do that and keep slots open and clear and be vigilant to blow debris from channel surface. Do I win the bet ? Thanks
@GCFD2 жыл бұрын
I think it would be much easier to clean the grate itself instead of trying to get leaves out from among small stones. 👍
@gordonmacqueen86943 жыл бұрын
does that terra cotta pipe (9:05) go into the weeping tiles? I ask because up north that was a fairly normal practice about a hundred years ago. But it typically went into the city sewer, not a drywell.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
Your guess is as good as mine here. All I know is the snake hit an end and during very heavy rains the drain backed up into the basement.
@tucobenedicto1093 жыл бұрын
Brown spray paint or even camo they have. My channel drain concrete got hit at the end of the driveway by the snowplow. It's leaking at two joints but I think I can repair the concrete with the same blade as you used. It saves the dirt from riding into the woods. For the four inch bottom drain is there a strainer I can put in?
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
The problem with strainers is they get clogged.

Lessons: good fall out of the channel drain. Run other lines when you're doing concrete work. Gutter drainage will wash debris from the channel drain.

So many mistakes on this job. First, you never combine downspouts with ANY other drain. In a heavy rain the downspout will overload the NDS and the water will come out of the grate rather than go in. Second, the soil in your area is unstable so the little triangle of concrete WILL settle. If it settles in the back corner it will raise along the NDS and crack the mortar you put in. The pipe should have been routed around the concrete. Third, if you want an effective NDS you should have cut the concrete 12” wider and seated the NDS drain lower. Pitch the concrete so the water runs to the pipe rather than cascading over it. Hire someone that knows how to install drainage. I would have found the dry well and added to it or give it an overflow so it doesn’t overload.
@GCFD3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input Stephen! I have done this a few times and I am just not seeing what you are stating will happen. We thought about finding the dry well but the homeowner didn't want to destroy his awesome yard. I should have mentioned that in the video.
