Love the old Barns. One thing I'd like to do after I retire is create a picture book of old barns just as a hobby.

U could probably sell books like that. I know there’s several with Illinois barns

Just warms an old dairy mans heart to see the barns inside. Just picture the cows standing there getting milked. So many are just falling and rotting down because their not used in any way. When I was young we use to put up loose hay with a hay fork in the barn. Had a team of horses that pulled the hay up until my uncle got a little C Allis to do the job. Neighbors all got together and helped one another put up hay and other crops. Can't tell you how many bales of hay and straw I stacked then threw down for feeding and bedding out of the barn.

if you ever run across that video of the claw that would be awesome to see. Grandpa always talked about using them. He said they used horses at one time. Of course tractors in the later years. Thanks for sharing.

Having Mrs Z in the video sure improves the looks content. Only you would make squares into rounds. It'll take quite a few squares to get that baler set to the way you want it.

Lol yes she does! Ya I’m only gona make some 4x3 bales just to make sure the auto tie works

Small bales are always good for some exercise! Not sure I have heard about too many people rebaling small squares into rounds 😂😂

My dad used to milk cows upt till 15 or so years ago. The old tie stall just needed to be redone inside. The old stanchions were beat all to hell being the main thing.Sits empty now. Kinda like seeing old tiestalls even though I think freestalls are better overall. Our barn had a grapple system in it to before I was born. It has a hay elevator in it now.

Jake, are you trying to tell us that you remember the dairy cows being there??lol Rebaling. Yes sir!! But we do big square not round😎 If both balers are in the same field, I'll chase any little broken bales with the big baler 👍 Nice old barn!! Not many like that left here😪 Jeff said it, you can start a dairy!! You can get dairy cows really cheap right now!!!😪😪😪😪 Just found out yesterday, the biggest dairy left in the county is selling off all the cows, they are done... ..

Gosselin Farms Ed Gosselin nope those were long before my time lol. So u run two big square balers? Ya only dairy thing I would do is fatten Holstein steers. That’s to bad they have had a rough couple years

Looks like a really nice old barn. Wouldn't mind seeing some of the video of that hay claw being used back in the day. Nice of your wife to give you a hand with the hay. Stay safe.

Would love to see the video of the hay claw. Can just barely remember us using it with the horses pulling the rope . This would of been around 1960.

Thats a nice barn, lot better shape than the one I milk in. How many stantions
@jakeziegler5994 жыл бұрын
Grandpa had a new roof put on it two years ago. The blocks have held up well. I think it’s 30ish. I know they used to run 2/3rd the cows in and do one side first then when they were done run them out and run another 15 or so in. Do u use Stantions or a parlor?
@mrbill41874 жыл бұрын
@@jakeziegler599 Dad and my uncle split off from grandpas herd in the late sixties to the barn I milk in. They put in a 4 stall walk through parlor, then they lost the herd from the whole PBB debacle that went on in michigan. Then my uncle split off to another farm when they bought new cows and in the eighties they ripped out the walk through and put in a single row of 12 stantions so the cows would have more time to eat grain and I'm still milking in that. The barn roof needed replaced a long time ago though but dad kept having it coated. I was thinking about putting in a double eight homemade parlor about ten years ago but when the milk price went in the dumps I decided to keep what had for awhile. Its to the point now where I need to do some repairs or get rid of the milk cows though. Its the roughest building on the farm though and to far gone to really make it worth restoring just to milk in. The milk hauler said there dumping milk like crazy he herd in wisconsin because of the china virus but yet the stoors are limiting people to two gallons. Lol
@jakeziegler5994 жыл бұрын
mr Bill what’s PBB? Sounds like that barn has seen a lot of use. Do u still feed at the stantions or just milk there? Ya I heard that to I guess the milk processors are shut down
@mrbill41874 жыл бұрын
@@jakeziegler599 PBB was a fire retardant used in plastic that got accidentally mixed in some feed supplements back in the seventies. Not sure how they found it out but the state took all the cows from all the farms that got feed from the mills that got feed from the contaminated source. It was a slip and fall lawyers dream. Lol They made a movie about it with Ron Howard I just watched a couple years ago with a bunch of fake news in it. Lol Showed Ron Howard on a B john deere just sitting in the middle of a field, then he gets off the tractor and walks up and tells his wife he forgot how to farm because of PBB. 😂 Cows get just TMR fed in a feestall barn, just use the stantions to milk.

Nice looking dairy barn Jake. Take my advice, don't get in the dairy business. I've gone down that road. I don't regret it, but I won't repeat it. Looking forward to seeing the round baler work. Take care! See you next post!
