Timely video Jelle. Thanks. Moved mine out a few days ago. Now just waiting to repot a few and defoliate and structurally prune a few more. Thanks, keep growing

Agree totally - all my Jade and Ficus came out yesterday. It is so good to have a clear set of windowsill again. Enjoyed watching and lots of good points made. Cheers

Yes. After this past winter I am opting to cut back on my "indoor"/ tropical bonsai. Personal preference says I am to lazy to bring in and out more than 2 trees. Great advice as always!!
@GrowingBonsai

Yeah, I know the feeling. On the other hand. In winter our livingroom is jungle. In summer, this holds true for our outdoor dining area.. Soo many plants make the move that a few bonsai do not make the difference!

Hi Jelle, I put gravel in my drip trays to raise the pot out of the excess water, worked well for me.

Fair point. In this case, my tropicals stand on top of the heater and I need to provide water!

More excellent advice! My tropicals have mostly been living in my vehicle shelter. My are still has nighttime lows below 10C. A cool summer this year, but that means the trees will keep growing all summer. They won't go dormant in the heat! They don't get worked on as much because the mosquitoes have formed extremely large air force squadrons and are definitely out for blood...

These videos are excellent Jelle……far superior to my own……you remind me of a nurseryman called Dik Messeman out of Boskoop. (Spelling maybe not correct). I dealt with Dik for many many years before he retired. I have also retired now after being a nurseryman for 50 years. You explain everything so well, especially your air layering technique, which I was about to show on my channel, but now I think will just point people towards yours. Well done. However, here in the UK it not legal to collect sphagnum moss from the wild….though you can buy a suitable alternative I think. I’m not sure what your substrate is….looks like grit and vermiculite. I am so pleased you have posted this information for people. Best wishes……Malcolm (Plantsmans corner)

Hey Malcolm, welcome here! Such nice words! I do not know dik, tbh, even though I grew up cycling distance from Boskoop (in Gouda). I think what makes my channel slightly different is that I take time before many of the techniques videos to think out which elements need to be covered and I prepare for the video. Intent is to show people complex techniques in a simple way so it does not look so scary to try. The substrate is a blend of stuff I have bought over the years as I reuse. Diatomous earth, expanded shale, Pumice and bark are the main things in there, with traces of zeolite, akadama, Seramis.

Hi Jelle, I stopped indoor Bonsai. Reason is the winter time. During summer outside it’s no problem to cultivate the trees. Indoor conditions in winter are not really easy. Humidity too low, spider mite … only outdoor since many years. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is an issue. I am also holding back on getting more that need winterprotection.

Did someone switch the sun off at the end of this video? Yes please a video about why trees remain so wet would be handy Jelle. Thanks again 👍

Hi Jelle, another great and timely video, I’ve been a subscriber for a long time now - keep it up. Could I ask you and the wider audience where you keep/store your bonsai throughout the UK winter months.?

I heard we had frost last night. I did not know fortunately so I did not tell my trees and they never noticed. I doubt we really did have frost though (but friends told me about white lawns)

The lowest of the day must be above 10 Celsius or 50 Fahrenheit, right? Looks like good weather doesn’t want to come to auK this year… we’re still going down to 6 degrees over night… having the tropicale still inside!

I've heard some people say that the best time to make large/thick branch cuts is in the winter because the tree is dormant. The other half say summer because then it can heal the wound. Do you have an opinion on this? Love your content!
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
I see ess die-back risk in spring rather than winter. So that I prefer. CHallenge though is that callus growth can be very thick at this time.

A Brazilian rain tree is one off the tropical trees I really need in my collection 😂. Is there much difference in keeping the ones with fluted trunks and the ones with round trunks? Is one more resilient to root/pruning than the other?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
I am not sure what you mean with the ones with round trunks. All BRTs have the tendency to get twisty trunks.
@scheers100
@scheers100 Жыл бұрын
When you cut the trunk(not really off course) horizontally there are some with round trunks and the ones with fluted trunk are not round. I have zero experience with it, this is only what I have heard about the Brazilian rain tree.
@Albanus35
@Albanus35 Жыл бұрын
@@scheers100 There's not really any difference, as BRTs grow older they'll get that twisty look on their trunk and branches, that's why it's called "Chloroleucon TORTUM", the shape of the trunk doesn't reduce their wound healing process, in fact that species heal very well...
