Love your video! 2 questions - the phal in your new glass pitcher- love it- describe how you will water it. Does it sit in water? Or do you water it and pour out the excess? #2. Are any other orchids suited for this type of Potting?
@orchidsgardeninengland16823 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia, during the winter months I only have a small reservoir of water at the base of the vase, however now that we are experiencing an increase in temperatures, I am able to leave them in more water but never letting the rhizome sit in water, because this can cause stem rot. I check my phals in water culture once a week, but if need be they will tolerate longer (especially useful if you're wanting to go on holiday). Not all orchid roots will adapt to this type of method, some of those with finer roots can object as their roots are more prone to rotting. Spring is a good time to transition to semi-water culture, however, just choose one to start with. Good luck!

Hi Margaret, your video was very inspiring, I loved it. I repotted some of my orchids to glass vases, after a few weeks very fine mould fibres appeared on some roots. What's the best way to water the orchids in glass vases? Can I spray the roots with water?
@orchidsgardeninengland16824 жыл бұрын
Hi there, you may find that mold appears on damaged roots, I try and check mine quite regularly, cutting away any roots that are 'bloating'. At this time of the year, keep the water level low. You can certainly spray the roots, but again, don't have the water level too high after spraying. I try every 7 to 10 days, taking my phals out of the vases, rinse the media, clean the vases, and then Bob them back. Good luck!

Apologies for not responding sooner, I have been celebrating a special birthday. It's difficult to say, because I don't know your environment. Hi Chris, some of my phals are getting quite large with extensive roots; don't like the idea of too much water in the vase because of the cold winter's, but bringing that phal through last winter using the vase and a few grow stones at the bottom without any die back of the roots, has given me the confidence to covert other phals to this method. Their roots have space and there's lots of air movement making happy plants. I only have one Oncidium powellii, I find them difficult so have never bought another one. Only try out one to see if this method works for you, and good luck 😁

I just recently found your channel. I am trying this method on my phals. But I do have a question on fertilizing them in the glass. I generally mix fertilizer into the water. Will this burn the roots that are in the water?
@orchidsgardeninengland1682 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, I never over fertilise. I use a TDS reader and only fertilise, say around 60 ppm during the winter months, but gradually increase to 150 ppm during Spring. I use the same strength fertiliser for all my orchids, so for my phals I refresh their water every week to ten days. Firstly, disgarding any water in their vases then cleaning them before replacing with fresh water (always rain water in my case). Periodically, I may replace fertilised water with just plain rain water. Orchids growing in the wild may not have access to lots of fertiliser, so their needs are taken care of by rain water and what detritus passes them by, i.e., bird poop!

I am in the desert in the USA, and I am getting desperate to save my poor phals! You have a blessed day!
@orchidsgardeninengland16826 жыл бұрын
Hi Joyce, it can take a phal a long time (I have one which took 3 years), to transition to ones own environment. The reason for this is that the store-bought phals are raised by the large nurseries to bloom spectacularly, then they want you to throw it away and buy another one. The phals are grown under controlled conditions, just enough light, water and fertilizer, to trigger optimum blooms. Once they have flowered, the plant has to then establish its own growing environment, and this can take a long, long time. Be patient though, given the right conditions, they will eventually bloom for many, many years. Good luck 😊

hi margaret ... just watching this again... i am thinking you have a lot of phals in the vases..... with out media ....are you going to take the others out of gravel as well... i found the pots way too heavy with gravel as well.. and why do the phals have to be under so much weight???? can they be free in vases... with moisture and feed.... mine are putting down new roots and no mould or die off with little water in the bottom like you... and i leave the filaments on and take off any old velamen.. and give them a spray with the hydrogen... usually the new roots take over the old and stick to them for hold.... after a while the root ball loosens up and starts to drop down and relax.... thank you for a great idea... and mine are on the move with new leaves/ roots which i am fine with ...
@orchidsgardeninengland16826 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, nice to hear from you. At the moment I am leaving the stones at the bottom, because once the roots find their way beneath the stones, the weight of the stones will help the roots to adhere to the bottom of vase, thus anchoring them, so that they feel nice and snug. I know what you mean about the weight of the vases with all those stones, but I only have about 1" of stones at the bottom. I am so pleased that your phals are romping away. Remember to keep those roots a lot drier as you move through winter. I only used to spritz them, never letting them sit in a layer of water; in England it is too cold as well. Take care Chris :)

I didn't realise you could have orchids in a glass vase with no soil, you can tell I'm pretty new to this, after managing to let 2 orchids die, one which was given to me as a Mother's Day gift, sadly lost it, that upset me then bought one which was reduced from £20 to £10, it died too :( I have recently bought myself another Phal, which so far is doing good after getting some good advice from another KZbinr in Canada, I have her sitting in bark after removing her from the moss soil she came in and drilled holes in the plastic pot she came in for air....I do love your idea, maybe I will get another orchid and give this a go but what type of stones do you recommend for the vase also, I don't have any of those polystyrene things, are they necessary? Hello from Scotland :)
@orchidsgardeninengland16825 жыл бұрын
Hi Suz, so glad to have you on board! It's so disheartening when you receive an orchid as a gift, then to see it die. If you are buying any orchid from a Garden Centre, Supermarket or Florist, the chances are it has been mass produced. This means that after the initial blooming they want you to throw it away and buy another one. Orchids are grouped by genus whereby some are epiphytes, some are lithophytes, some are terrestrial. To simplify, phalaenopsis orchids (the one's we all fall for) come under the category of epiphtye, which means quite simply the grow or attach their roots to something. However, the difficult part is to transition them to our environment. I always, when buying a new orchid (whether it is in bloom or not), unpot it. The reason for this is that the orchid has been grown specifically to last only a few weeks. Initially, it will have been planted either in a plug of peat moss, or a plastic container filled, again, with pest moss. Once unpotted, you can decide to repot the same way in a container, or you can mount it or you can place it into a glass vase with just a few stones (any will do), just so that the roots have somewhere to rest. Epiphytes, must NOT be over watered because this will kill your orchid. I could write a whole lot more, but don't want to overwhelm you at this early stage. Please contact me again if I can help further.

My only question is don't they need drainage?
@orchidsgardeninengland16825 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah, it isn't necessary to have drainage per se, how I grew my phals in glass vases was a form of water culture, however I never removed them for many months, only then to clean them. Some people prefer full water culture, some semi water culture. It all depends on your environment. If I have a phalaenopsis that us struggling, I will always place it in a bowl or vase put a few stones in the bottom, a very small amount of water and place the phals roots on top. This will help keep the orchid hydrated, but sometimes as a consequence, some of its roots will turn mushy. Unfortunately, not all orchids transition to water culture. The other type of method is semi hydro, this is whereby your orchid is placed in a container and you fill your container with clay pebbles (firstly piercing two holes side by side in your container an 1" or so from the bottom), then you fill your container to the top of the rim with water, which will then slowly drain leaving a residue of water in the bottom. I trust this goes someway to answering your question.

Hi, I have an orchid without any lower root system only aerial. How do I help her to produce lower roots. I live in the UK, had her 2 years and only flowered once.
@orchidsgardeninengland16824 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynn, once phals lose their roots it is a long haul to get them to recover. In time, however, they can send out new roots, but you need to decide whether it is worth the time and effort. If you are prepared to experiment i.e. what is it potted in now, have you tried to repot it, or mount it. I have three phals which had no roots and for weeks I've been trying to encourage new roots, two are attached to a open type plastic pot, the other is on a piece of wood. All are attached with a little sphagnum moss, which I let dry completely before spraying again. It takes time, many weeks in fact, before you notice anything, but don't give up. Keep the aerial roots hydrated. I hope this helps.

I didn't use glass beads or glass marbles, no other reason than I didn't have any. However, it is something you have to decide yourself, your orchid roots will soon let you know. I don't know about sunlight damage to roots, I have a Vanda falcata, which sits atop a glass vase and has two roots hanging down. It sits in front of a South facing window, but we are only in Spring at the moment, maybe when it gets warmer during the summer months, I might have to rethink its position. How do you choose to use water or bark only.
@orchidsgardeninengland16826 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat, first of all I chose a phal, which I was prepared to lose, then I transitioned it through an English winter; Spring arrived and this particular phal started to send out green growing tips, that is when I realized I could grow in some form of water culture. I only transition healthy phals with a good established root system. This can be done in the Spring, but if we are still experiencing cold weather, then I would hold off until late Spring. I changed one of my phals over to the glass vase method, but after a couple of weeks I could see that it wasn't accepting the transition, so I immediately put it back into bark. I suppose now that I have more experience, I err on the side of caution. If a phal is growing and the media is suitable for your environment, then leave well alone. I trust this goes someway to answering your question. Take care

@orchidsgardeninengland16825 жыл бұрын
Hi there, if we are talking about phalaenopsis blooms, the way we receive them the blooms are always upright, basically this means the shops can get more on their shelves. However, in the natural environment phalaenopsis blooms will lend themselves to be horizontal; as soon as the buds appear, you shouldn't move the plant around, because this will cause it to bud blast. The flower inflorescence will search for the light, so moving its orientation will disturb it. Good luck on your orchid journey and thanks for dropping by.

I visited relatives in Derry at the beginning of the new century and I was amazed at 11 at night it's almost still evening and there's daylight then the sun comes up at 3 in the morning great for plants

What potting medium do you use
@orchidsgardeninengland1682 Жыл бұрын
I'm moving towards inorganic media. Our accessibility to good bark has diminished rapidly since leaving Brexit, so gradually I am transitioning mine. However, for my phragmipediums (those not in semi-hydro), I use rock wool. When moving an orchid to a different media, they may drop their roots, so we have to be patient. Phalaenopsis easily transition to water culture, however, if you move them to this method of growing, they take their time adjusting.

Thank you very much im new to orchid care. Received my first one as a gift about 5 months ago and week ago i bought another ......they are very expensive here in South Afriac

Unfortunately, here in Great Britain, orchids have become very expensive. Since leaving the European Union, our import laws CITES prevent us from importing orchids without incurring import duties. Good luck 👍

How do they do in this method?
@orchidsgardeninengland16824 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, in the end I decided not to continue with this method. I now grow my hybrid types in open sided round pots (all the way from China and very cheap). If I am correct, you grow all yours in glass vases, and a very impressive collection you have.

I don't think I would be using the Styrofoam as is not a natural substance
@orchidsgardeninengland16825 жыл бұрын
Hi Christine, Styrofoam peanuts, believe it or not, are loved by orchid roots. They send their roots through it and as it isn't organic, it will last for ages. Many growers use packing peanuts as a filler to a pot, it weighs nothing and water runs through it. It is, however, a case of preference. Good luck!

You are TOO LOUD…all that banging around of the rocks. You have no idea how loud it is on the microphone. I wish I could have watched it all. I want to pl;ant some of my orchids that way…very pretty. But you need to have a SOUND CHECK if you are going to continue to throw rocks around during your entire video. I got a headache as it is!

I will certainly take on board your comments. Unfortunately, I am a little hard of hearing, but I can appreciate those with more sensitive hearing, it would be very uncomfortable. Thank you for letting me know.
