You know my sewing space. I have everything organized just where I need it. And occasionally, this room turns into a third bedroom. Well now I have two children that live out of province and in the past couple of months it’s switched to become a guest room that's occasionally a sewing room. It has seriously messed with my schedule. So in this video, it's my new studio tour. There's an Ikea Hack, a new sewing setup and hopefully I'll find my groove again.

It’s a long story. I retired three years ago, moved south to warmer climate, purchased a small home…and last summer I purchased a new Pfaff Creative Icon sewing machine. I fell in obsessive love with this new hobby! But I have very limited space, of which I’ve gone totally overboard with this new love. But thanks to you and to this years’ challenge, I have totally revamped my sewing room! It’s a very small space that also shares my office desk and file cabinets. But I have reorganized it so my sewing cabinet, my cutting table, my thread cabinet and my fabric cabinets all fit in my little room. My living room no longer has to share space with my sewing room! I purchased a cutting table that has drop sides so it folds down to 12” and tucks up against the wall when I’m not cutting fabric. But I can also lift one side and put my wool pressing mat on it when I’m pressing. I installed pegboard on my wall above the cutting table and hung my rulers on it and got them off of the floor leaning against the wall. I cannot thank you enough for all of the inspiration you have given me to declutter and arrange my space so it is MUCH easier to thoroughly enjoy my favorite hobby! What a difference…I love my new home, my new hobby and my new sewing room! ❤❤❤

My cutting table is my late mother's rectangular dining room table with all three leaves installed. I use 8 bed risers if the table is fully expanded, and 4 bed risers if all the leaves are removed. I count myself lucky that I can use my mother's table with all its memories as I work on my projects.

Your guest room/sewing room story is SO similar to mine. My guest room gradually became a sewing room bit by bit. I proposed propping the bed mattress against the wall, and had a collapsible bed frame in a box in the corner of the room. My Bernina 770 was on an IKEA trestle table that had a removable top. So when guests came, "all I had to do" was take down the trestle, stow the legs and top behind the living room sofa, and put the bed together. Also, my sewing machine had to be stowed, along with my works in progress. It worked. Sort of. And while the mattress was up against the wall, I used it as a design wall. But then I added a Martelli table that's too big to wheel out of the room. And soon I just could not have guests unless I wanted to also disassemble the Martelli and put lots of stuff away. (Don't even talk about the 12 vintage machines I collected during the pandemic.) But I have no alternate space. Getting rid of the Martelli and putting in a Murphy bed is the next possibility. Or putting up a separate studio building in the back yard is another idea. Hmmmm....

Hi Karen, thanks again for all you do! I did go and purchase a Husky table for my new renovated sewing room (small former bedroom after I decluttered it). And I did get it without the drawers so I could lower it enough to sit at it with my non-hydraulic sewing chair. Great to sit at and hand bind my first quilt. And then raise it up high enough to cut material for my next quilt!. I paired this with a gate leg folding table (Kensington Table Rolling Cart by Simply Tidy). This allows me to expand my cutting space when needed, or fold it up and tuck it away. I had an old IKEA corner work desk from before I retired. My husband lowered it to the lowest level, and now perfect height to sew and quilt on using your tips for ergonomic sitting to do FMQ. Organized the whole room and Wow does it work well for me! Asked my husband what he thought when I was all done - " I don't think I am going to see very much of you now!" And the decluttering is now going on for the rest of the house! Thanks again for all you inspiration.

I’m so jealous that your space is large enough to accommodate all the great organizational things I so covet! Congrats and thanks for sharing. Just think how much fun the 2024 declutter is going to be with all those new cubby holes!! Helpful hint: don’t put something somewhere “for now “ only to pick it up and move it again later. This is called stuff shifting and is useless. Put it away the first time and voila! Future work and decisions are eliminated. Happy weekend all!!

I'm fortunate to have a large sewing space available. I'm unfortunate to have a large sewing space available because I have an uncanny knack for filling up space with "stuff"! Cautionary tale for those of us who repurpose existing furniture. I have cherry dining table (used for staging) with 2 extensions that made for a perfect sewing surface. HOWEVER, a heavier sewing machine in the middle of a fully extended table, puts stress in the middle. I noticed that my table was bowing down. The weight of the machine had caused the screws to slowly be pulled out of the extension rail. Thank goodness I found it before it collapsed and tossed my machine (either on the floor or my lap). I fixed the issue by putting in mid support.

Karen, you sparkle in today's video. Glad you're feeling better and congrats on progress in your Noom journey. I drooled over your new Ikea storage island and the new desk/table from Home Depot. Love your new sewing space--you'll be more productive because you'll be happier and relaxed. My sewing area is on the right side of our basement. I just keep expanding. 🤣 The left side contains stuff from 2 of our kids when they've moved, and stuff from our move 7 years ago. It needs a major decluttering, but not today because I have some sewing to do... Thank you for sharing!

Thanks, Surprisingly I needed that boost talk about Noom to get back to it! This week I've been trying to reorganize my sewing/guest room. It started out as a giant headache when my son came back for Christmas and he had lost his room, so I lost my sewing room. One thing I learned is that I need many storage boxes, though I've always hated the plastic kind. Looking at Ikeas stuff, I really liked some of your choices but I know I need some boxes that are only 4 inches high. Each day I learn something. My husband gets dragged out most days for ideas. You've been a great inspiration, thank you!

After alot of trail and error I invested in a 52" Husky adjustable work bench a year ago for my Juki TL2000 machine. My back and neck has been so grateful for it. I purchased a 3 tiered rolling cart from Amazon. Each tier is about 6" wide and 15" long. It store perfectly under the right ledge of the work bench when not in use. When sewing it rolls next to my right side for quick access to my snips, clips, pins, etc. - Rhonda

It is nonslip on the bottom and Teflon fabric on the top.

I've wanted to make one of these. Based on the price of all the pieces I decided to buy a thrift store 5 ft long dresser (75.00), its large enough for a ironing board and cutting station. It ticked off a few boxs, cutting , ironing and storage. Yes, like yours, I put casters with breaks. As far as ironing, I made 2 boards one for the full length and the other a 3rd of it. These were made out of scrap plywood my nephew had.

Be aware that humidity builds up in the wool pressing mats with a heavy pressing session. I damaged the oak top of a chest of drawers. Even with a heat reflective pressing sheet beneath. Ended up putting a new surface on top: towel to prevent slipping, giant bamboo cutting board, heat reflective mat (rubber backing so it doesn't slide on top of cutting board) then wool mat. No moisture gets past cutting board. If I'd had a piece of scrap glass that would have been a bit thinner than the cutting board.

This goes on the right, and this goes on the left.....Chefs call that 'Mise en Place'. Basically, setting up your workspace so that you can get the exact tool you need without having to look for it. A word of caution...since you elected to use MDF, it would be a good idea to paint wherever you trimmed, or cut the MDF. Use a putty knife to cover the roughed up area of the MDF with spackle. Sand and paint to give a nice smooth finish to the MDF, and get rid of that weird furry look that MDF usually gets

I made a similar island last year and just love it. IKEA and Home Depot! A few suggestions to anyone thinking of this: I placed the two cabinets on separate pieces (HD melamine shelving so they were white like the cabinets). They clamp together, or will separate to fit out the door if I ever need to move to a different room. Also, added a top, removable layer of HD styrofoam insulation sheets (they come in multiple thicknesses and sizes and are easy to cut) covered that with ironing board fabric. Now I can pin into the top, iron on it, or lay out my cutting mats…such a functional island! Karen, I’ll look forward to your tips about managing two sewing spaces as you progress…you always find us such great ideas. Wishing you good health and grateful for all you share.

What an inspiration 🌞 My sewing space has been in my dining room - but I decided over Christmas it would be nice to have my dining room back. I am blessed with a very large bedroom and I figured by moving the bed just a few inches I could move my sewing table in and still have room. Love your videos. I noticed you are putting your wool mat directly on the butcher block surface. FYI I did that on an end table and realized the heat and spray caused condensation that damaged the wood surface. You may want to add an old cutting mat under the wool mat to prevent any damage.

Great alternate video! What a creative solution to making your studio a more workable space. Get well soon! PS the break in your decluttering series is an opportunity to invest more time on my UFO situation...15 minutes at a time. 30 years of memories and delayed decisions. It's gratifying to be making progress. Thank you.

Well, I'm impressed. Well done. Thank you, yet again. You got us through the pandemic. Now we've (hopefully) emerged from that, and you're still showing us how to maintain the momentum. Added bonus...your humor in several places.... "I know a guy..." 😄

Love this video! My last sewing room was tiny and cluttered. It was our office/greenhouse during winter/sewing room and there was too much furniture to function. When we moved, I scored a giant loft for my sewing. I was then gifted a bar-height dining room table that has changed my sewing!! I'm so in love with my sewing studio, and I love yours too! Hopefully it fosters lots of creativity!

Your doing a great job, very informative. Don’t let the steam from your iron and wool pressing mat ruin your new table tops.

I did something similar for my sewing space, using homemade plywood cubbies specially designed to accept the plastic drawers and bins I'd been using to store my notions and project bins. I have two of them, each topped with butcher block countertops, and each on wheels so that I can arrange them to create whatever size and shape of table that I need in the moment. I sew standing up, so my sewing table and cutting table are one and the same.

Your new set up is great! I'm a little biased though because mine is very similar. I DIY'd my big table out of the same Kallax units as you, but I got the long white laminate countertops (2) instead of the butcher block (too rich for me!), and I drilled the casters directly into the bottom of the Kallax units after attaching them with mending plates and L brackets. I love it so much! Before I had a studio space that could accommodate such a large table, I bought one of those Husky tables! Then another, and then another. So I have all three sizes, and I use the biggest one for my ironing station. I do still have a sewing set up at home, and I agree with your friends about the difficulty of moving projects around, as well as tools and supplies. I've gotten in the habit of doing all my cutting at the studio, and some tools I've purchased a duplicate set of to minimize frustration. Still figuring it all out (2 years later!), and it's not perfect, but it's much better than sewing out of my bedroom. I hope you love your new space. It looks wonderful!

Bernadette Banner also had a video where she designed her own sewing worktable for her NYC apartment much as you did yours, only she used 2 dressers as supports for the tabletop and it was definitely not movable. While not everyone has handypersons with tools available, it's good to remember that DIY is an option when you can't find Functional Furniture that Fits. ;)

Love watching your shows Karen, and am eagerly awaiting your progress on your fitted jacket. Have I missed the posts or have you stopped that work?. Still a dressmaker at heart, I loved the pattern fitting segment. Have tried this with reasonable success, but a sewing buddy would be a really handy gadget! Cheers from South Australia x
