The ducks are old enough to go to the pond, but they don't know what to think of all that water. Plus other short videos from during the week around the homestead.

We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acres homestead. We just finished building our log cabin overlooking our pond. We are trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey living the rural life and developing our property and becoming more self sufficient.

We used to have woods around our house, and around the end of April every year, the fireflies would arrive. By the hundreds if not thousands. I thought they were using our woods as a convention center; but after a while, I finally realized they were coming up out of the low muck where most likely, the previous batch of flies would lay their eggs. It was a glorious sight. In one low area, on the ground, there would be three groups of hundreds, each. They glowed in unison, but when one group was "on" the other two were "off" ... It was really a very neat "happening." Whole new meaning to the term, "Like a duck to water!" saying! And yes, I love watching your farm life!

The husbandry you and Rebekah display for your farmstead and animals is inspiring. Congrats on hitting 70k subscribers. Everyone that is a subscriber needs to share this channel with one other person. They are a good couple that love their animals and farm and show the good, the troublesome and the rewards of small farming! Honest and forthright! Which is admirable in a society that always wants perfection. The imperfect, perfect couple and farmstead! My favorite channel by far on YT. Thanks for taking us along!

Loved this video....so special trying to get those ducks in water. I guess next time you will give baby ducks a kiddie pool to splash in. This shows the old adage is not necessarily true. "Just like a duck to water" definitely doesn't resonate with this crew. Hahaha. They told the other ducks last night, they were "house ducks" and were going home. You and Rebeccah are now the proud owners of 4 pet ducks. Good Luck. Have a Blessed day.

Not sure if it would be worth your time but I remember you saying the ducks sleep on the water for safety. It might be a fun idea to build a floating coop or dock for them to get on at night. Not sure if they would use it. Just a fun idea.

Kentucky side of the lower Ohio River valley and we're supposed to be having these periodic Cicadas also, some places nearby are getting them but we haven't had a single one and it is something of a mystery. I suspect it may be weather related, it's only been recently that it has started getting normal hot, it's been an unusual cool spring.

Evan I noticed your diesel cans in back of truck 🛻 one of the hardest trouble shoots I’ve ever had was a stink bug climbed into spout. And when tractor tank got below 1/2 full engine would be starved of fuel from stink bug clogging inlet causing engine to shut down needing venting. Causing hours of lost time. I keep a shop cloth in spout now . I took 3 years to figure out .

Hey Evan! I really enjoy your videos; especially watching you use the older equipment to maintain your homestead. I’m curious as to what your daily employment is while also working your farm chores. I will be retiring from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on July 31, and I am retired from the USAF; therefore will have about 40 years of federal service. My birthday is August 1; so would appreciate a shout-out on that day. Looking forward to watching more videos on setting up your barn with your various tools...really like your new barn.

We had the yearly kind of cicadas in our Virginia home; I've only experienced the 17-year kind twice in my life out in the countryside. As children, we could always find several cicada shells on our old maple tree, and we'd pull them off and hang them on our blouses as 'brooches.' And when I was a young mother, living in the country and experiencing my first 17-year bunch, it was so funny watching the chickens and guinea-hens running around after them. They could almost stick out their necks and - voila! Snack time!! Fond memories. Hope your ducks do well in their new home, and that your dog(s) leave them alone. Ever thought about building a faux island in the pond for them to lay their eggs and shelter?

The ducks will get used to the pond and they will stay closer to it once they get accustomed to being in the water on a regular basis, the chickens are getting close and the two cows are growing bigger. My dad, my brother and I used to buy calves and raise them on my uncle's farm and then carry them to a meat processor and he would process the cows and cut and wrap the meat and we had a freezer storage locker and put the meat in there until we needed it and that helped cut cost a lot.
