Everybody loves Metallica, because they’re great to learn guitar. They have some easy stuff and they have some challenging stuff. Also if it wasn’t for Metallica (and you for teaching it), I wouldn’t be able to downpick at the speeds I can reach now :)

Total beginner, here only been playing a few months. Playing mostly easy stuff like Nirvana and Green Day and The White Stripes. That happens to be my favorite sound, but I've been doing this shortcut already and I keep beating myself up saying I'm cheating and I try to do it the other way and it just doesn't work. I am making the problem worse by playing a 90's jagstang with large hands. A glutton for punishment. I am so grateful someone who knows what they're talking about has made me feel like I am not an idiot and can make some progress in the way that already felt right

mind BLOWN. I've been so annoyed at my inability to slide power chords. My thumb was always creating drag. I'm going to practice this when I get home and see how noticeable the difference is. Thanks guy!

I noticed Ace Frehley years ago playing with his little finger as we call it in the UK, Ive always played power chords this way for 45 years, its easy and natural for the hand.
@EgdLegend5 жыл бұрын
This makes so much sense, I naturally play power chords like this but kept thinking it’s the wrong way! And was trying to play with thumb behind. After watching so many of your videos I’m just going to play how it comes naturally!! There’s no right or wrong , end of the day it’s the sound your after , hope you agree . Keep up the awesome work

Very good tip Carl! I have had my hand in that awkward angle when I play regular power chords which is fine when I sit down but very hard while I stand. But I'll definitely try that technique out!

Rare to hear someone discuss the technical reasons for hand position...and very refreshing . The thumb hooked over the top doesn't work for me due to my small bear paw fingers but nice to see the different options and the angled fingers certainly helped me..
@pimpchris213 жыл бұрын
ive been playing for 2 years and always played with the index and ring finger!!! this will be challenging to switch to the pinky but it make sense
@hesekie13 жыл бұрын
Another great lesson, thanks
@johnohara542 жыл бұрын
Another thing is pinky usage on power chords means no change in wrist pressure just clasping pressure with the FACE of the pinky. If you use ring finger then you are changing wrist pressure to go up on the ENDS of your fingers causing onset of fatigue quicker.

Great video, Thanks :) Question: do you have a video explaining power chord sliding? Like for example in Master Of Puppets verse riffs.. I notice James hetfield sliding only his fretting fingers while the thumb stays put. Is that true/easier or am I just missing something ? Thanks :)
