Loved the video. I have a similar motor with no tell tale, so I’ll be installing one after this video. Cheers

There's also a service bulletin on the exhaust plate covers where you need to take off the outside plate cover and you believe a section about 2 in long in there what it happens is air gets trapped especially at the on the bottom cylinder and if you don't relieve that area so that the Air does not get trapped and not move this to the top of your exhaust plate for your tail to you'll overheat your motor a lot. It happens a lot after you run it and it gets warm.

Do you have a link for that? I'd like to see it. Thanks!

As some of the water from exhaust manifold is actually used to cool down the exhaust - I think that the diameter for the water flow indicator is way too large and it wastes water that is othervise used for cooling. A smaller diameter tube, or a reduction piece would do the same job, and allow more water flow trough the exhaust.
@captainandmissunderstood Жыл бұрын
the diameter of the fitting is the same as the old one. Unfortunately it isn't specified in the document what size orifice to use. It seems to me that since it's coming off the top of the block it should be ok with that size. That's just a gut feeling though.
@kayskogheim8134 Жыл бұрын
Originaly there is a reduction piece in the other end.

Not... More water out of motor allows more cool water in.The pump circulates more water than is needed to cool the motor..

I have a 1989 48spl that looks almost identical under the cowl. I wonder if I should do this to mine. Seems my motor runs, not overheated necessarily but hotter than normal. Guess it couldn't hurt to do it. Thanks for taking the time to post your video, nice job!

Thanks! It was such a random issue and difficult to "trip over" the document that I felt the need to share it.

i work on these 40/48 rudes and johnsons 1989-96-ive had two that got hot no matter what i did-both have been in saltwater-i tried every kinda flush and no success till i tried 1part muriatic acid to 7parts water and circulated this solution for over 2hrs and both run normal now-lots of calcium and scale were in the bottom of tub i used-i took off gearcase and mated a garden hose to a clear plastic hose w a nozzel on the end that fits into the water inlet in the midsection held in place w a 1x6 board-use a 1100 gph bildge pump in tote to recirculate the solution-gottta take out thermostat-running hot can also bee a lean fuel mix by carb adjustment or leak in case/top/bottom seals or leaking reeds or reed gasket-that all i know bout it-forgot bad water pump

You noticed an improved in temps just by moving the tell tale hole? I am having an issue with over heating on my Johnson 70 just picked it up last weekend. I was getting the alarm after about 20-30 mins of running at what my tach said was 3k rpm I couldn’t get it to run up past that. I just changed thermostat and changing water pump/impeller tomorrow but mine as well add this hole as well
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
Actually I still had the problem after this but I had such a hard time finding any information on the Service Bulletin and procedure that I decided to make this video (after performing the move).
@jameswright24812 жыл бұрын
@@captainandmissunderstood I cannot figure out what my issue is either alarm is going off. I changed the water pump/impeller, relocated tell tale and swapped thermostat
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
I ended up removing the thermostat as a test and it resolved my issue. So far I have left it out. I did the same as you without resolving the issue which is why I went to this step. Did you buy actual Johnson/OMC parts? They have different springs for different designs that could be causing some of the issue.
@mickbullerman4976 Жыл бұрын
Curious if you ever got that fixed? Mine only overheats when I’m gear and going slow (no wake/trolling speed). I’m going to try this and see if it helps!

Nice video. Where did you buy the brass elbow fitting and the hose?
@captainandmissunderstood Жыл бұрын
I just bought them at the hardware/auto parts store. Both are standard, off the shelf items

Is that a 70hp looper ? I had a 82 Evinrude model and it started leaking water in the cylinder and seized over the winter possibly from that issue. You did a nice job and good idea using the brass fitting with teflon not plastic. I did that with several omc motors to add a freshwater washout hose line to them same way you did.
@captainandmissunderstood Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by looper? I'm not familiar with that term. Thanks for the comment, it definitely runs much better now!

I know this is a year ago but what is the hose size you used for the tel tale
@captainandmissunderstood Жыл бұрын
I do not recall but it seems like it was about 1/4" ID. I will check and let you know!

What was the stuff you used to stick the drill bit shavings to the bit? That would be useful for many projects, many thanks for the video!
@captainandmissunderstood11 ай бұрын
It was just a little bit of Marine grease from the grease gun. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Maybe I missed it but did you mention what you did or how you plugged your original tell tale hole?
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
I left the tube connected and ran a screw in it and zip-tied it. Putting as plug in there would be easy but I didnt want to risk removing the old elbow from the exhaust plate.

Very good, thank you for answering so fast!!!

Is this where I want to install it On a 70 hp 1977 model that didn’t come with the tell tale at all?
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I dont know the answer. If you look at a diagram of that motor and verify that's the water jacket area I suppose it could work.

Hey man at operating temperature with half throttle, what’s the temperature supposed to be at in these outboards. Mines a 65hp.
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
I believe the thermostat is 140-145 range but finding out what they’re actually running is difficult. The tell tale at the bottom is lake temp. I used a laser thermometer on the top of the motor and it would run in the range listed above.

I have a 1976 35hp Johnson seahorse where would I put the pee tab on it
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
This was a specific recommendation for a small window of motors. Like 86-91 60-75 horse. That recommendation told me exactly where to put it. Without a factory guide I’m not sure I’d attempt it without disassembling the water jacket.
@brt-jn7kg2 жыл бұрын
On your old telltale give get you a pipe plug and screw into it with some putty around it the plug.
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
I was concerned about any issues with the old plug breaking so I just used a plug and zip-tie in the old hose.

In the fall drain from the bottom or the water might freeze
@captainandmissunderstood2 жыл бұрын
Good call...fortunately where I live we dont have a lot of freezing weather but that's a great idea. I can easily open the bottom hose and let it drain. Thanks!
