Moving from SoCal (new villa in Esplanade Lake area) in about 5 months. We can’t afford California anymore. I’ve lived there my entire life (60 yrs). Let’s see how well I do here. Keeping my fingers crossed🤞😳

@@youmakethecall99 I grew up here, but we also moved back after a stint in SoCal. Esplanade is a beautiful place to live! Our biggest surprises from SoCal to FL: The humidity makes a big difference - especially that first year, and our growing season is completely different if you like to garden. My hubby hadn't lived here before and expected both to be similar since they are both hot climates, but he was floored that tomatoes go in the garden in October and not March. LOL!

That is true! There has been a lot of out-of-state money that has moved into the area. There have been many people who could cash out of High Cost of Living areas and not bat an eye to the prices here in SWFL. That's definitely made it more challenging for locals to get into the market.

My wife and I love to vacation on the Florida Gulf Coast but have decided not to retire there. I have visited Florida alot since the late 1950s and have relatives all over the state. Southwest Florida is now over built with too much traffic and too many people. There is also much more crime and social problems than we are used to in New England. We figured we would actually spend more time indoors to get out of the relentless heat than we do in the winter here. Grocery shopping is basically just Publix where we have Market Basket and many other stores to choose from, along with world class medical services, the mountains, four seasons, and a country seashore environment. Florida homes are all on slabs with no basements, attics, and inadequate storage space. They are usually one on top of another with no privacy. A barking dog or a rock and roller could make your life miserable. Finally, the cost of living has increased so much in Florida that it is becoming more like the north. On the plus side the state is very well run and an economic power house with no income tax. Many companies are moving into the state and bringing good jobs with them. There are alot more opportunities for younger people than there used to be.
@GUITARTIME2024
@GUITARTIME2024 2 жыл бұрын
A "rock and roller". Lol......Actually, so many neighborhoods are HOA that noise issues can be dealt with. People can get fined by the HOA board. Also, why store things when you are retired. Live smaller. You cant take it with you...75 and sunny here in Cehtral NC today, and we're lucky if we see any snow this year, awesome. Just got back from Hilton Head, SC. You should check it out if you have decent money.

@@MovingToFortMyersFlorida The rest of the world sees the dramatic footage of the hurricane, and the immediate aftermath. But news cycles are quick, and attention spans are short. What most people don't understand is the long slog of disaster recovery. It takes years. Having gone through Hurricane Andrew in southern Miami-Dade County, and witnessing my entire neighborhood get incinerated by wildfires in Northern California in 2017, I can empathize with what you and your community are going through. This is an opportunity to build strong community cohesion. I experienced that in 2017, and my neighborhood has become an example of how to rebuild smartly, and help one another recover from a disaster. I tip my hat to our local government, as well as the state of California for making the process easier and providing valuable assistance along the way. We just passed the 5 year anniversary. Our neighborhood is nearly 100% rebuilt, and rebuilt with the future in mind. It was hard work, but I'm hopeful that the greater Southwest Florida region will also recover quickly, and learn some valuable lessons to make future disasters less painful. We're all in this together.

As a Florida native, the heat is bad and I don't care what the thermometer says, add the humidity and you get a "feels like temp" (go google heat index calculator to see what I mean) Add the Mosquitoes and sporadic rainfall and Florida seems like a terrible place to live, but the trade off is: It has the best beaches in the U.S. if not the world. As a military veteran, I have lived or visited places around the world and nothing beats the U.S. and Florida Beaches make the heat bearable. The place is great and diverse and while yes there are bad places, ghettos, and run down areas in Florida, there are also sleepy towns that are relaxed and have a chill vibe or have a lot to do, night life wise. Also depending on where you live in Florida, a drive to New Orleans or Atlanta is only like 3 hours away, so you can get some of that big city life if you need it. Anyways, change your latitude, change your attitude! Peace ✌

Our median age in Fort Myers metro is 40 so I wouldn't worry too much about being too young. But yes, moving cross country can be very expensive. My best suggestion is to do your research. If you can, hiring into a company that helps with moving costs is also a great benefit. Clients of mine were able to get a relocation package with Lee Health so they could move from Fenton to here. :)

I have lived here for almost 22 years, since LCE decided to double our electric bill they can have this state. Traffic is awful, people are at Point A and need to get to Point C and they don't care what is in between. Lately we have pick up truck morons riding your bumper, which scares the heck out of you. Recently a young lady had it filmed,but police did nothing to that reckless driver, why? according to the officer I talked to his answer was "we didn't see it, so we can not do anything!!!!!!" Even with it being filmed police would do nothing!!! Our prices down here are even higher due to the fact we have so MANY vacationers, Snow Birds!!! City managers keep looking for more building, however they do not keep up with sewer, water, roads, schools.Road flooding is in many sections of Lee County. City manager says it is not their problem, road commissioner says it is not their problem. Meantime everytime we have a heavy rain streets are impassable, one area had to use BOATS to go down their street!!! Time to get rid of all the dead weight and get people in that DO something. Housing is getting higher and out pricing so many of low income people. Those on SS are finding it harder to decide to buy their prescriptions versus food, insurance payments or going to the doctor. Florida is growing way too fast, expensive housing outpricing the normal worker, sure slinginh hamburgers gets you $20.00 an hour, but did you go to college for that? Housing is about taking almost half your pay check.

I moved to Fort Myers in 99 from Louisville Kentucky..absolutely loved it! I moved away 3 years ago. My reasons: Got way to expensive. Not alot of GOOD jobs. Drugs and addicts everywhere. Heat! I did just go back to Fort Myers for a week and left a couple days before Ian. One thing I did notice that 41 going towards downtown is alot more rundown. But I feel like Fort Myers looks more rundown by the year anyway..If your 35 years old or younger you will find Cape Coma as they call it, Fort Myers, estero and all surrounding areas quite boring. I guess thats why alot of the people down there get into drugs or alcohol and why its a huge problem down there but I found it very boring there in the end..I love the ocean so that was enough until it wasn't. The rent has gotten out of control there if you want to live in a safe and not run down apt complex or condo you better have some money...and like I said above there are not alot of jobs that can pay you enough to get ahead..I either knew older people who had retired there or had a second home there who had money or everybody else I knew was living paycheck to paycheck struggling...

And lots and lots of TrumpTARDed MAGAts. They're pretty easy to kill though - all you have to do is convince them ( for purely political and power purposes ) that a safe and incredibly effective medicine that has been given to over 5 billion people on this planet so far - is somehow "suspect" and is part of a "Radical Socialist Communist Hillary Clinton Democratic Evil Plot" - and then they won't take the medicine - and get sick and die - alone - in an ICU - from suffocation. I have heard so much about Fort Myers. One day I went on Thanksgiving weekend vacation to Fort Myers, Sanibel and Captiva. The Sanibel hotel smelled like wet rotten rags. The place was apparently flooded, cleaned, but the smell was still there. The next day I stayed at the Captiva hotel, I took the second floor room to avoid the same problem. A year later the Fort Myers area was hit with the strongest hurricane ever. Hurricane Irma hit with 150 m/h winds and devastating surge of over 6 feet high. I wonder how the hotels function there after hurricane Irma.

We love Florida, and moving from New England to Florida the family distance was a consideration but lots of new developments have eased our concerns. A lot of new budget airlines are serving southwest FL, fares less than $100 each way make it pretty affordable for us to take a long weekend trip up north or grandkids to visit us. Phone services today and internet services have made a daily phone call or facetime basically free, so we talk often. We've also found that when we do get together in FL we have a more intimate visit with friends and family, they're responsibilities and distractions are over a thousand miles away, so we spend more time enjoying the water and beaches as well as other sights and activities.

Florida isn't what it once was due to all of the influx of Northerners over the years as well as the influx of foreigners allowed to move in and refuse to learn English or adapt to and embrace American culture. We moved out of Fort Misery last year due to many reasons that I don't have enough time nor space to list. The following reasons are not in any certain order because I believe that they all belong in the number one spot. It get's so hot that Satan buys property, cost of living is higher than a heroin junky that never comes down, in many areas in (Cape Coma, Cop Coral, Crap Coral, etc.. and Fort Misery, communicating with your neighbors will either be difficult or unable to do due to a language barrier, playground for the rich, waiting room for the decrepit, party palace for the young, bad attitudes are considered good manners, blue collar workers are always working just to pay bills, the beach and the heat are not good enough reasons to commit financial suicide....etc...Renting in a less than honorable neighborhood will cost on the low end, around $1500.00 per month. In most other places, $1600.00 and up. Still think it's a paradise?

They should spend some of their multitudes to rebuild they fantasy world for idiots. Las Vegas without a casino on every block. This storm was a geographical changing storm. Fort Myers and certain surrounding areas have been rearranged or destroyed. There will be plenty of work for people to do, but today's workforce has become the lazy force. Bonita springs is beautiful! If you can handle this heat, then you are doing great. Especially as we start to get into the main thick of it. :) If you need any help please feel free to ask!

Need to know before moving to Florida: Very bad health care. It is very difficult to find adequate, let alone good, health care providers. I would strongly suggest that you see health care providers in the north including dentists. Florida is a very superficial culture, especially in Orlando. It's a great place for mainstream but don't count on intellectual stimulation. Florida is halfway between the United States and a third world country. Services are not good, schools are poor, and customer service is almost non- existent. Floridians are friendly but not very helpful. People are not generous with information or much else. It's just the culture. Florida is very expensive. Don't move to avoid state income tax, you will pay in other ways. The cost of living, for example, is very high, especially rent and real estate. Wish I had known these things before I moved here, I would have chosen another state.

We used to go boating in AZ on the Colorado river and it'd be 120 degrees too. Thank goodness the river water was so cold! When we'd be moving on the boat the warm air would feel like a hair dryer blowing in your face! Ha!

It's not just the summer heat in this part of Florida, it's 11 months of the year heat. We only have spring and summer seasons here. We understand other areas get hotter, but do they go to the beach on Xmas day?

Which location would you say is better overall Estero or gateway area right by RSW? Not sure why Estero home prices are 30% higher.
@MovingToFortMyersFlorida
@MovingToFortMyersFlorida 2 ай бұрын
Esteros location is closer to beaches and getting around town. Gateway area is a little further out. It's great access to 75 and the airport so it really depends on what you need. But as the old adage goes, location, location, location. And Esteros location gives it the boost.

Probably the ninth reason, would be threats of hurricanes!
@MovingToFortMyersFlorida

I do discuss the hurricanes in the 8 reasons... but... if you ask locals right now they'll mention blizzards, earthquakes, droughts, wildfires, and tornadoes. Our storm is historic and we have a lot of build back to do. But most locals aren't planning to leave.

@@MovingToFortMyersFlorida Sorry, I missed you mentioning that people were concerned about hurricanes. I was thinking, how glad I was that I didn't buy a home, in the Bradenton area, a few years ago. It was a real bargain. And I recently saw a story, with the headlines, that people are now looking for bargains, in the effected areas. That also crossed my mind. And I live in Miami, and use to live with a guy, that worked at the hurricane center. He got me interested in them, and comparing the news, and what actually happened. They prepare the big cities, even when they know, the hurricanes probably, won't hit them. Just to be on the safe side.

Been here in Lee county my entire life. It used to be a place I loved until it got invaded by everyone & their mother moving here & over saturating the place. Now rarely do you see Fort Myers natives anymore it's a concoction of every northerner here trying to make this their residence as if Fort Myers was such a grand ole place. Truth is it's not & it will just continue to get worse as people continue migrating down here who aren't originally from here. This & this alone is the main reason why most natives have moved away. Pretty soon there won't be any left they will all be transplants.

@@MovingToFortMyersFlorida I spent some time down there in High School going to Desoto in 1990. My grandpa had a canal house off the peace river and I always wanted to be able to make it back. Funny thing is south Florida was full of northern people back then. I had no problem in high school finding a group quick being that I was from up north. First day of class, guy right next to me was also from Detroit, lol. I'm keeping an open mind, just figuring out if I'll eventually retire there, or we'll pick up and move in about four. My wife is a nurse at a really awesome hospital in Michigan so least I know she'll find a job. I see it as an awesome place.
