I live in nz but I enjoy watching these videos. For families with young children (0-5 years) I suggest joining Playcentre as a way to get to know people. There are Playcentres all over NZ and is a great way to get into NZ culture and meet people.

I have lived in New Zealand (Auckland) all 17 years of my life and honestly cant remember ever feeling an earthquake! sure they happen and they are serious but people help each other out and you just deal with it.

Hello! I love your videos as it's really helping me to get my head around the move and the country of New Zealand. My fiancée is in the British Army and he has a particular skills that the New Zealand army need. I'm really excited as we are currently going through the application process, but I'm so nervous. I'm so close to my family and I have a twin sister, so leaving will be super hard. We are still going to give it try because we both have this attitude that life is for adventures and we shouldn't turn an opportunity down. So we are wishing the proses goes smoothly. Thank you Jen! My wife and I, (and also our 10-month baby) have been doing TONS of research on migrating to NZ. We live in the U.S. and so far we are looking into Invercargill because of the quiet, and affordable housing among other things of course. Both of our professions are in the skill shortage list fortunately. Since I can work over the internet, I will most likely and hopefully keep my U.S. Job, and we'd apply under my wife's profession. I might add some questions here eventually if that's OK. Thank you again, these Q&A videos have helped a lot!!

Sam T Oh Sam, I know about Tim Tim Shadbolt! haha I have a the Stuff app on my phone to check on NZ news. I saw the video of him riding the scooter and some other interviews/news. He seems like a legit happy person. My wife and I watched The World's Fastest Indian a few nights ago, and he is also acting there quite a bit! A single person if very frugal, renting and with no debt could live in a good Auckland area on $50K at a minimum. At 80K and above you could live quite well while renting AND save about 25% to 35% of your take home pay AND own a car.. (this is my experience.. as a well paid single male with no debt, renting my own 1 bedroom place (no room mate) in a good area and with payments on a modest new car. ). In my opinion owning a home in any part of greater Auckland would require a household income in excess of 150K. Auckland house prices now exceed $1 million NZD and entry level apartments now exceed $500,000 NZD. I hope to move to Taranaki myself in a few years.

wife and I tried to go this route over the summer. looked for jobs, ended up choosing Wellington, looked into selling our house here....then ran into the job situation. Its hard finding a job. I think, being an American, we arent looked at lightly. I had some companies kindly respond to me in LinkedIn and ask for my CV. However, I never heard back from them and I believe I have a pretty healthy resume. If I found a job, we would have left Florida in a heartbeat. Earthquakes smearthquakes! Its beautiful there.

hey jen! thanks so much for another moving to New Zealand video! i get so excited seeing these! since we last spoke, hubby has had a job offer in East Tamaki. been looking at schools and houses etc. looks like we will rent but no way im buying there the prices are crazy!!!!! as a family of 5 who moved from Ireland to Australia i must say i had all those thought too about snakes spiders etc. we lived in qld and saw many snakes which scared the crap outta me! never swam in the sea because of crocs and jellyfish haha thankfully we didnt encounter spiders phew! we stayed for 3 years and moved back to ireland to have another baby! now emigrating to New Zealand East Tamaki area. will deffo be looking for groups to join as i found the 1st move i didnt get involved and i myself felt alone. so this time ill be more involved! keep up the fab videos and love ur intro!!! best wishes stephanie aka Effy Murphy (facebook)

I agree, east Tamaki isn't somewhere I'd live either, and a lot of it is an industrial area. There are so many other lovely suburbs in Auckland that would be preferable.

An Aussie here Jen, you made me laugh out loud when you were talking about all the dangerous animals in Australia. Never seen a Funnel Web Spider and I live near bushland, never seen a Crocodile, only in the Zoo, Sharks are everywhere, even around the shores of NZ. They have been tagging sharks here lately and one was monitored all the way to NZ and then returned back to Australia. Your comment that you heard Australian's were raciest, sorry I have not seen that, but I'm sure it exists as it does all over the World. I have meet many South Africans in Australian and nearly all liken our weather to South Africa. Where you live in NZ always reminds me of the country town that I was bought up in, with your Garden and your fruit trees. I have been to New Zealand and found it beautiful but I could not live with your earthquakes, as you said you could not live with our "wild animals", so each to his/her own. I do love my country very much and find it not wild at all, I just respect its animals, especially our snakes etc as you respect the earthquakes and think nothing of them is how I think of our bush animals. Another Aussie here. I'm in the north-western outskirts of Sydney. We get big spiders here all the time. Mostly huntsman spiders (totally harmless, but man are they UGLY. I mean savagely beaten with the ugly stick. LOL), but we have had funnel webs. Our neighbours dug up their backyard some years ago to have a pool and decking installed and they had to have a pest exterminator come out because they found LOTS of them in their yard. We sometimes get them come into our garage if it's been raining a lot, because they're ground-dwelling spiders and when we get lots of rain all at once, their burrows fill up with water, so they go looking for somewhere drier to hang out, and it seems my garage is a popular hangout. ICK!! Racism. Yes it exists everywhere, and yes I've seen it in Sydney. Sure it's not as bad as it is in other parts of the world, but racism is ugly no matter how or where it presents. I've met people from all over the world, and generally speaking, people from elsewhere are just like you, but maybe with a different accent or skin colour or whatever. We loved our trip to NZ last year, and are now seriously considering making the big hop across "the ditch".

We landed in Auckland, and stayed with some friends there, then hired a car and headed down to Rotorua, then on to Wellington (where I totally fell in love with the place), Interislander across to Picton, down to Christchurch, across to Lake Tekapo, then on to Wanaka and Queenstown for skiing and other fun, and then back to Sydney (* sob! *). Best. Holiday. Ever.

a single person could live comfortably between 200 to 370 a week rent is the most expensive if you rent a room that around $80 to $100 or a house from $150-$250 depending on size and location etc in the CBD it more likely to be expensive and you need money for food and clothing and other necessary items and have money to save and spend on yourself hope this helps

Arizona Fryer hi, I am the person who asked this qns. Does that mean a salary of 1.5k per . month is sufficient? From my research seems like room rental can be 200 per week! How much would a common room with a attached toilet cost?

you would most likely be on a very tight budget so, make sure you spend your money well you would honestly be better to rent a house for like $150 or like in a motor park/lodge where you have a cabin/small house with all the facilities you just pay your food i that makes sense I'm youngish and still live at home so i'm not 100 percent experienced it yet hope this help any other questions just ask

I have friends house-sitting in Auckland right now, and apparently the place they're in is worth well over a million dollars. Nice house, lovely area, but that blew me away. One of my friends said that if you took that exact house and put it in a similar suburb in Wellington, it would be worth half that much. So in other words, Auckland is like Sydney - nice city, but housing costs are ridiculous. We worked out that we could sell our place in Sydney, discharge the mortgage, and still be able to outright buy a decent place in Wellington. 0.0 Scary.

Since I'm considering moving from Germany to New Zealand at some point in my life (I just turned 18 so I still got some time) I've been watching all of your videos on immigrating and they're really helping me figure out what I like and dislike about the country- just one thing I don't think you have adressed before, do you know anything about being LGBTQ+ in NZ? Just about how they are generally perceived by the people there. :)

I asked a friend with more experience of the LGBTQ+ community and she said, "NZ treats most people fairly. Gender equality and fair treatment of the local people kinda goes hand in hand with their laid back acceptance of the LGBT community. I just went to see an all male revue at "Q" theatre and trust me it was pretty wild. An Aussie troupe and even they made a lot of comments about how far ahead NZ is of Aus in terms of their treatment of gays - legal gay marriage, etc. I'd imagine that like most countries out in the country people would be more conservative but the cities are really liberal." I'm pretty sure you need to prove that you can provide for yourself, so you will need proof of funds. If you do get a visa through a job you only have to work at that job for 3 months once arriving (or at least that's how it was when we came over).
