Native New Yorker here. Airpods/headphones is totally normal in nail salons, even upstate where I live, and has been for as long as I can remember. New Yorkers don't like talking to each other under most circumstances 🤣

Taylor, can’t wait to see your east coast content. I am a new yorker through and through. People who don’t live in the east coast especially NY/NJ do not understand the culture and often mis interpret it as rude. In Manhattan you will find TONS of nail salons that are packed all day. We are constantly jumping from meetings and taking a lunch break to get our nails done. We are on the go and normally are moving at a fast pace. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re being rude we just need a minute to ourselves. The nail tech is used it to it and at times my nail tech and I just need a minute of silence lol. There are times when we are super chatty but most of the time after a 5 minute chit chat we just need some time to chill and the nail salon is perfect for that relaxing break. I think once people understand how NY operates they either move with the current or get swept away by it and turned off. I hope you get to understand the culture and thrive in it. Can’t wait to see more! 🥰❤️😝

You are so inspiring. Honestly. I’ve been watching for a long time but just really started watching as a “regular” and found out about your chronic pain condition and it truly blows my mind how adventurous you are. Moving the way you do gives me such anxiety cause I also suffer from a chronic pain condition and it’s caused me to want to be comfortable in my hometown around people who understand. Starting fresh and being in the unknown with nobody you know around who understands is so brave. Also taking those steps to plan ahead knowing a flare up can happen at any time is something I’ve never been able to do. How do you do it!?

I live in Northern Ireland, in a large town (probably small in USA standards lol) and we're pretty social chatty people so beauty stuff like nails etc we don't wear earphones or anything, just chat and get to know our therapist, I have been to New York and had nails and stuff done there, again I didn't use earphones but noticed locals did, think the therapists were shocked at how chatty and polite we were, I honestly think it shows respect and (hopefully) makes their day a little nicer if they have nice chatty happy customers!

where I'm at, most salons still have largely esl speakers, so while I do say hello, they mostly like to just get working and my nail tech, Ming, will ask me how she's doing occasionally. while she understands English, she doesn't speak it very well, so it definitely depends where you go! she does joke that since I speak five languages, I should try learning Vietnamese, and for the life of me I've tried, but I just do not understand the intonations.

Although I'm very conscious of how I treat public facing workers because of working in retail! Haha

I live on the East Coast, NYC has a lot more esl speakers than, say, upstate, and yes, so many folks wear earphones there. when you're out and about, nobody really talks to each other, it's just how they are.

I’m always astonished at how much you are capable of achieving and handling… not bc I doubt u in anyway but simply bc I cannot get myself moving. When I do feel ok, I wander around not knowing what to do or lacking momentum. It’s crazy. Just wanna shout out all the hard work u put into everything every day. Between work, scheduling, moving, packing, free time, social time etc. omg girl you are on fire. I know you’re not able to do things every second but I truly hope u know it’s amazing how much u do when you are able. I live in Iowa and used to get my nails done in a small town. I don’t notice others with ear buds, but most are on their phones. Some nail techs in even the larger cities like to talk if you are willing. Many are relatively new immigrants and want to improve their English. It wouldn’t surprise me if this becomes more common. I am a high school teacher and many of my students would have ear buds in all the time if we would let them.

On the nail topic, in London, if I'm in a proper Salon (that does everything) then I talk to the person doing my nails because she's my normal therapist for my facials and everything. If it's just a nail bar, not really as usually go with a friend so we'll just be chatting. I also have no idea if nail salons are the same in the states as over here! Good luck with the move!

Press on nails for your toes are the best thing ever, they last a good month even in the pool and the polish doesn't chip. I either get the ones already painted with cute designs or get the clear ones and paint them with gel polish and gel top coat, the toe press on's come with these little sticks at the end that you use to hold on to and I keep those on as it makes painting much easier and only take them off once they are glued on my toes (if that makes sense lol), best things ever
