For complex animations I'd prefer to use Maya or 3D StudioMax because the animation capabilities of SW, ProE, Inventor e.t.c. are sufficient for straight forward mechanisms but not more. The models could well be generated in any of the engineering CAD programs and then be exported. Not that unusual. So, what exactly is your point here?

The wing design needs the elbow and wrist joints attached, as in a real birds wing, better seen in the wing of an eagle. The shoulder joint moves both down & back simultaneously, in the downward cycle, & can be locked out for a glide to conserve on energy needed. During the upward cycle, the elbow & wrist retract, as they efficiently cut trough the air, getting ready for the next downward cycle. The wingspan & wing area, must be calculated to compensate for the weight of the body being lifted. The wing design with proper angle, locks the two outer joints in the downward trust position, then relaxes them as that downward thrust is lifted.

@ryanistheryan Glad someone understands, you are also correct! as humans, we tend to turn our attention to things that change drastically, like if you are looking at a house with 5 windows, and suddenly someone closes the blinds on one window, you will immidiatly turn ur eyes to look at what changed. apply that to what you said, the BIG poles flapping infront of you would be the things you would look at. why didn't they look at the poles? because they werent there.
@JimmyNahlousVisuals12 жыл бұрын
@645524pasto Thinking about it, using Maya will show you how it works.. however, its more like showing you how you WISH it would work... Solidworks would show you if it is POSSBILE to get it to be working like that. in Solidworks you can simulate a gun, gunpowder exploding and the forces that it produces and the reaction of the parts in relation to that. whereas in Maya, you can just animate the the trigger moving, then animate the springs and the bullet etc. so yeah I think i am right.
@JimmyNahlousVisuals12 жыл бұрын
This is CGI as well.. no one will use Autodesk Maya to simulate the mechanics of an engineering product, you can use Solidworks and such to work out where the stresses and weakness can be found. seeing the way that girl was holding that thing, you can see the "match-moving" is well done, however nothing of that size, unless it weights less than a kilo, can move so subtly [im talking about the jitters of the mechanism such as at 0:51 - 0:59 ] Also the materials are not photorealistic

@jarnosmeets80 The difference between flight and glide is: Flight overcoming gravity and aerodynamic friction. Glide using gravity to overcome aerodynamic friction. This is should be called Wii controlled glider. Will not be powered flight until he can prove it can take off from a standing start. Planes only glide as they come in to land.

I say it's fake because it is, not because I'm petty. I can and have done really great things. I also do computer graphics for a living plus I have a keen sense of newtonian dynamics. my confidence that this is fake is in the high nineties. for the sake of argument you could say 100% certain. the irony is that it wouldn't take that much more effort to actually do it. some RC motors are super powerful, just needs a stronger joint, more degrees of freedom and more sophisticated control. and a tail

Wait a minute, why is she looking at the middle the whole time and he's telling her what it's doing? Why is she not looking at the arms moving? Her eyes are not tracking around at the motion occuring, like she's holding something center and there's nothing else to look at. I don't know, folks. The central load-bearing circular joints do look mildly CGI and glossy, but digital video can sometimes make real stuff look like that, too. He could be controlling CGI with the Wii remotes. Ground tests?
@Larknok112 жыл бұрын
@Valca000 Critical thinking and this are entirely different. In order to determine if this is fake or not, it requires knowledge of engineering, which honestly, I do not possess, but I do possess critical thinking and am an atheist. I must ask you, why is it impossible that this device could weigh just 2-3 kilos, hence the ease of the motor in lifting up and down? And then why is it impossible for a wingspan of 15 feet to overcome gravity? I'm lost, explain.
@DanFrederiksen12 жыл бұрын
there is a reflection but the reflection seems too long relative to her body size. the sound isn't right either. at the last upstroke the wing precedes his motion and the sound. and the last down stroke which is slow the pitch is much the same yet stays longer meaning it would go through a longer gear range. it's a pretty decent fake but still makes them douche liars

I'm not going to discount it based on the weight. For all I know, it's got the harness weight belt around her or it's up against her waste, in which case the length of her arms would be pushing the rear of it against her body as a bracing.

Maya is a major 3d modelling/animation program designed and produced by Autodesk. They have a number of different programs. It roused suspicion because usually for engineering and architecture people use CAD which is specifically designed for such uses. Maya is the industry standard and is used more for making digital art, and even CGI. Many major films such as Avatar have used either Maya for various scenes or just creating objects of their movies. Guy come out and said it was fake anyway.

I didn't state whether I thought it was fake or not, a great achievement nevertheless, very well done and fairly realistic CG animations.. at the time of the comment I said I was not sure about the videos validity.. after I did some research I discovered that indeed it was CG animated.. still it's a pretty elaborate and well thought-out fake.

All these Wii controller things are cool, but... are they necessary? The only thing you wanna control is the motor speed, right(the flapping mode seems to be fixed by design)? The way you did it is:flap your arms, use sensor to tell how fast you flap your arms, micro controller receive the sensor signal and tell motor how fast it should rotate. Well, fine, cool. But why not directly use some kind of pedal or handle to control the motor? This way you can even free your hand to sth else...

I downloaded each video and found that I can not in any sound mind deny they are in fact building a wing mechanism. I am examining the latest video from the test flight for

Dear Jarno, I like your viral videos. But a REAL engineer would have simply used a simple mechanism and a potmeter to define the angle of your arms, so it could output it WITHOUT DELAY to the wingservo's. And explain why you arent hired by FESTO already? They are leaders on innovative mechanical sollutions and they could only manage to get a 'tiny' 2kg bird flying. But I admire all the effort you put in to this project, en ik hoop dat het een leuk afstudeerproject was.
@ryanistheryan12 жыл бұрын
@TheBBoyJmE I agree. Something to note, as far as acting goes, they are all using the backpack as a reference. In real life, you would be paying attention to the giant moving rod right in front of you. It is moving a lot more and would be more noticed then the exact center of movement, which is little to none compared to the tubes right in front of you. Also, with the movement of the device, the device would produce at least minor movement in her hands that would match the wing movements.
@BrownanDownable12 жыл бұрын
The wings won't move exactly as his arms do. Because the wings are designed and programmed to move in the up and down S rotational pattern that mimics a birds way. That way he doesn't have to focus and flapping his arms exactly the same all the time. He has to keep an eye on his battery life, and concentrate on other safety measures. Trying to multitask like that while trying to perfect the way a bird flaps will inevitably result in a catastrophe.

He said "believed" in God so he may have been referring to people in the past. @nyckloo12 жыл бұрын
Fake: distortion around the wings (watch the wind on the left), they are wearing black (to make it easier to CGI), and the backpack device is obviously on some kind of stand. you can tell the backpack is being supported because the girl moves really weird in the beginning and she holds it weird. plus! her pants don't fit at all!
@andrewlambrecht511312 жыл бұрын
I can't believe anyone thinks this is real. You really can't tell that the mechanical arms are computer generated?!? If that is not obvious enough, just look at the reflection behind them, the left one from the cameras perspective is longer in the reflection than the "real" thing.
@sponjiraggae12 жыл бұрын
This is indeed a great achievement. Thought something makes me feel skeptical, not even all the people saying its fake but just the videos themselves. And I want to find out more about it, Im not on either side of the barking competition but doing research, being curious.. nothing is obvious here.

See Gizmodo for a good deconstruction, with high praise for the artists from CG professionals. And still unanimously declared, and then demonstrated, as a CG fake. They identified the software in the computer model as Maya, for instance, and not an engineering CAD.

@samvanprooijen I'm not sure the problem is going to be the speed of the motors but the sheer size needed to get a man of his size up off the ground. Look at any bird and look at the size of their wings compared to their body. Not to mention that birds have hollow bones, Humans kinda don't....
