Hello Pete. I started my gardening business when I was 38 years old and that was in 1998. I had carpel tunnel in my hands in 2021. My knees were bothering me really badly for a spell. I try to not eat sugary foods and drinks, no alcohol, no processed foods, and eat foods that help with the inflammation. Makes a big difference if you want to have less pain in your joints, knees, hands, etc. I am hoping I can keep working a few more years. We all need something to do. I figure if I can still do gardening and the physical work that comes with it , and get paid for it, then why not. I think it is a good idea to research foods that are healthy and foods that promote inflammation. Best wishes to you and your family.

Hi Nancy that’s a really good tip We are all guilty of getting busy and eating or snacking on the wrong things so your advice is actually really good I just need to be more disciplined with what I eat and try not to give into temptation and sugar retreats when busy I hope your carpal tunnel is better now

@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 Thank you. Yes the carpal tunnel finally went away. My doctor suggested I wear a brace to keep my wrist mobilized when I was not working and when I was sleeping. Also she suggested that I rest my hands. That is why I usually only schedule four days per week of work. I also hired a weeder to help me in my own yard so it doesn't get out of control. My gardening accounts thought it funny that I hired a weeder for my yard, when weeding and trimming is mostly what i do for them. How am I supposed to rest my hands if I am weeding in my yard in my off time?

Hi I do grass cutting one week and garden maintenance the next week, it breaks it up a bit, I am 62 and it's working for me at the moment. I would soon get bored constantly doing all lawns or garden maintenance. The thing with garden maintenance is you can see a good finished product, at the end of the session. It's a shame England doesn't play as well as you work.😅

Hi Nancy, I'm like you started a gardening business 7 years ago and now aged 60. I only do lawns as part of bigger maintenance jobs and now only do gardens that I like. I am fortunate to have great customers who appreciate my work. My greatest asset is being RHS qualified and having a good website. As for crumbling joints i try to do less now and also do shorter days. Life is short and you need to enjoy it. I like your suggestions or cutting out foods that cause inflammation. The other thing I do is visit an Osteopath regularly, which really helps. All the best.

Thanks for doing this and sharing your experiences mate, for me I’d say it’s down to plant knowledge if you know your plants do the maintenance and charge what you’re worth and take on what you want. If you’re not bothered about the plants and can be happy mowing all day do it as both are easily doable it’s what you prefer doing and feel comfortable doing the only issue with mow blow and go is if you don’t know your lawn care on top of it you could become unstuck if you suddenly get asked why a lawns struggling etc.

I find doing a bit of everything helps prevent aches and strains. When I do whole days or a week of just mowing, just hedging, or just weeding, you develop specific ailments relating to that task. At the moment, I'm in the midst of the hedging season, and already have numb and tingling fingers from gripping the trigger despite taking regular breaks. Swap tasks regularly to avoid injuries and boredom.

Hi Pete, this is my first full season. I do mow blow and go's. I have approximately 50 customers that i visit fortnightly, all between £35-£50 per visit. 5 jobs a day, 5 days a week approximately £1k a week. I leave the house at 8.30 and im home by 1pm/2pm every day. I have space to take one off jobs like hedges ot garden tidies, which i usualy do every other saturday morning. I'm hoping next year I can retain all my fortnightly customers as well as adding on about another 15-20 to my round. I'm really really happy with how quickly I've built this up, I'm a little worried about dec/Jan/Feb, but i guess that's because it's my first year, I'm sure next year I'll know exactly what will happen in those months. I done a couple of weeding jobs but its not for me, cramps up my hands for days, so I'm focusing on grass cutting and thats it. My plant knowledge isn't great so i try avoid anything other than grass and hedges! 😂 Im looking at doing my pa1 and pa6 so i can add on spraying as an extra servic. Eventually, I'd like to go down the lawn care route with monthly subscriptions, but that's a whole new ball game to me at the moment. I guess everyone is different and it depends on what work is in your area and what you enjoy. Keep up the helpful videos and have a great week!

I just do 'mow, blow & go's' and I love it .... but my situation is different to yours. I work full time in the engineering industry and do my grass cutting as a side business, so simple MB&G's work well for me as they are relatively easy to do and sell. I do the odd hedge and long grass clearance jobs from time to time too. I don't class myself as a 'gardener' though and don't have all the knowledge that a full time chap like you would have, again making the more simplified business model a better fit for me but if you do have all the knowledge and experience of a proper gardener, it makes sense to offer the full suite of services. Another positive for MB&G's is that you only need a handful of equipment to effectively start, so your outlay for machinery & equipment costs are much less. I only have a multitool which has my strimmer, brushcutter, edger etc, a lawnmower, a blower and a few other bits and bobs, but someone who does proper gardening will likely require much more equipment which is an added cost.

Good question Pete and great video..After 4 decades running my own gardening company you will be surprised..still don't know lol seriously ive tried them all and they work but it really depends on many factors, in Australia we get hit with droughts from time to time so the mow and go only operators went broke because they failed to protect themselves .They didn't or they did not want to upsell their services and as a consequence went under...At that time we drought proofed our business with complete turn key to the maintenance of the customers grounds ,so gardening was an important part. Big hourly rates can be achieved my mow and go but has to be a tight run and I mean several customers in one street or others within mins of each other it can become not as profitable as gardening ..You see our quoting hourly rate ( purely for quote calculations ) at 180 per hour for gardening to maintain that rate mowing you have to be on the ball with timing your mows ,if that makes sense. The big issue we face now as I am nearly 70 so my work has to be a lot softer that's why we have a lot of ride on work for commercials ( reliable all year round ) Bit like your knees shot in this game its how you pace your self and adjust the type of work you do through out the journey. Thanks for your video Pete 💯

@@TheGreyGardener1990 I’d say 60% maintenance 40% mow blow go at the moment I try to leave Fridays for one offs so I’m off today but I’ve recently been to quote a job and I was shocked when I arrived They’ve got 150 aches of farm land they want a full day every Friday with two to three people hedge cutting and that’s it It would be a yearly round contract just because of the size I’m not sure if I should take it or not It seems a good deal I quoted £30 an hour per man as they wanted hourly rate They said I was more expensive than the last guy who was only £22.50 per man I’ve said I’ll drop to £27.50 minimum because it’s a lot of work and in fairness to the other chap he was too cheap for the good standard of work he’s done It was one of them a few red flags when quoting but the money would be decent a month They’ve said I can do a months trial to see how we go and what they think of us etc What would you do

the food you eat is what makes a difference in your body, the inevitable thing is, you are going to ache more and paint will always start to set in, Doing manual work can have positive and negative affects, it all depends on how you are doing those jobs, I refuse to give in to the pain, especially as I get older, yes there are 2 types of pain, warning pain and old age. warning pain is the one you must be careful with, if you are getting that type of pain something is wrong and needs to be changed, old age is something different. I suffered with sciatica for about 3 years, it go so bad that it was affecting my sleep, I was almost in tears sometimes. But I pushed through it. I saw a chiropractor and got myself sorted, I could have gave up but didn't. I know guys who are 65+ 70+ who choose to carry on doing manual work, albeit a bit slower, but just keep pushing through. As you get older your body needs to keep going or it will sieze. My point is, its easy to do the ehem "mow blow and go's" but In the scheme of things I think there is more money in being diverse and all round gardener, I enjoy weeding, I use a pad to kneel on and find it therapeutic, many thing you can't charge for it, I seem to be able to I think its because so many don't want to do it. I love hedge trimming BUT at the moment I have an issue with my shoulder, I need to be careful and see someone, its a warning pain. Mowing lawns became quite difficult when I suffered with sciatica, I pushed though because I know if I didn't that would be it, turns out I have a defect in my back and the nerves get pinches easy, sorry this is an epic monologue, just thought some of it might help

I'm young and fit as a fiddle, so for me, the bigger the challenge and the bigger the job, the better. Less competition means people tend to pay more for those sorts of jobs, as not everyone wants to do them, and they're viewed as more of a specialist trade. I also find in my area. Great video mate , 💚👍 I would love to start a mow blow and go business, But very sadly for me I end up getting roped into the jobs that a mower man has been doing for donkeys years and then the customers sack him/her because he/she wouldn't do any other tasks in the garden and the garden ended up looking really bad , oh except for the lawn, even when it didn't need mowing , it got mowed.🤣 I don't have the answer to which is best, All I know for sure is that you need a lot of knowledge and experience to look after the whole garden to a high standard ,which is what I got trained up to do. I don't have any where near enough mowing jobs and the clients down here don't like to pay because that's the bit of gardening they can do them self's and the customer view it as an unskilled job mowing (which we know is not the case) also people down he are more often than not too cheap, I struggle to get £60 for 2 full hours graft let alone 60 quid for a quickie job and they will be watching me in real life or on cc tv so there's no getting away with it , I know this because I have tried and failed more than a few times. Customers are not stupid. On price customers will work out your hourly rate and then decide whether or not to have you back. Sorry I had a bit of a rotten year , Just my opinion.

I will do weeding as part of full garden maintenance but not weeding only jobs. Any paths/drives/gravel will be treated with weedkiller. I think grass is too unreliable to trust over a year with water logging and drought so my mow, blow and go jobs just get tagged onto a full day as a bit of bonus money. Pushing a mower round all day would bore me to death so I prefer the variety of full year round full garden maintenance.

Getting you to weed a drive is a total waste of their money when you can spray it,in no time and your joints. Mow/blow,yep fine, less equipment, loads of guys do it round my end, nice earner, for a few months in this country, remember the start of this year, rain, rain more rain.l would'nt want to be dependant on just grass cutting to pay the bills. It depends on the size if its medium to large lawns £25-£30 is too cheap but for smaller jobs as a set price I think it’s fair The £60 mow blow go’s are mainly larger lawns I don’t have too many small ones just one or two the rest are big and a mix of full maintenance and mowing Pricing will also be different depending on your area in the country as it can vary in the south east it’s London prices but I know of people on the south coast near seaford and Eastbourne who can’t charge the same

Seriously mate, I'm coming up 56 ,as much as i like being a self employed gardener, and enjoy the plant side of things, Believe me I've got the aches and pains, and some days it's just too much. I'm trying to make everything easier, but i still don't think i can get by on just mow blow and go. There has to be a lot of lawns to cut, and it's even more dependent on the weather, you get a long wet spell or a drought , no grass cutting no earnings. Don't quite believe that some people can get by just mowing, or maybe they can if they say so 😉. And to be honest boring as f for me. so i do mix it up,also doing the same type of thing over and over creates specific pains and problems related to doing the same work. It's a difficult one to be honest. Find easier ways to keep on top of the weeding if you can. Mulching beds, spraying where possible, hoeing . Or just don't do it. Stick to what you know you can get away with, and steer away from what is wearing on your body. Comes a time when you just have to. ATB😊👍

Yeah for sure you could probably earn more grass cutting but that’s not a skilled job and doesn’t require good horticultural experience, you are a gardener like myself. If you have a ounce of creativity in you a week no a day of cutting lawns would drive you insane. I’m glad there are guys out there that cut grass as I can then be the creative one working with the customers. The day I think about a grass cutting round is the day I have given up on gardening (life). Yoga, eat well, switch off the news, be creative and your body will respond 🧘‍♀️👍
