After trying most of these blades in the past, I’ve come to realize the OEM John Deere blades (GY20852) cut and mulch the best overall and tend to give the grass the best overall appearance. I have a larger JD E170(triple blade system) so it’s 16 inch x 3 blades.

Nice to know the actual differences. I figured out gator style blades Don’t cut as clean in spring when grass is green and juicy. I use a high lift blade and around mid June when it dries out I replace it with a set of gator blades. Works well in my area.

Had a lawn mower shop for 20 years. The gator blade is the best thing since sliced bread. They are mulching blades. In the south where we have a lot of sand, they last about twice as long as regular blades. You won't have so much long blades of grass discharging. Grass almost dissapears. Regular high lift blades are for bagging.

I run the Gator blades as well, I mulch most of the time here in southwest Idaho. The OEM blades on my lawn tractor are fine, just standard high lift blades, but started mulching, and got my first set of Gator blades and haven't used anything else the past 4 years. I have G5 and G6 blades, the G6 blades are slightly heavier duty than the G5 that's the only difference with those. I can't see the need to run my high lift blades anymore, the G5 and G6 blades do a great job of getting the grass clippings out of the deck when I'm not mulching so I don't see using the high lift blades for my needs anymore. I got into mulching because I got tired of dealing with raking leaves. Since switching to the Gator blades I haven't needed a rake. The Gator mulching blades just make leaves disappear. They do great for that, and they do great for general mulching duties during the rest of the cutting season.

New to riding lawnmowers, recently moved rural. I have a 09 lt4000 42" craftsman and a 04 gt5000 48" craftsman the prior owners left behind. The 09 runs fine, had to do some maintenance on the 04 to get it going as it hadn't ran in over 10 years. Now it's purring. The gt has the bagger system, I keep as much clippings as possible for compost, I mow about 3.5 acres. Question is: because I use the bagger, what lift size blades is most optimal for this type of mowing? Thanks for any input.

New belts, blades, carburetor, oil, fuel, spark plug, a new idler pulley for the transmission, and it was running like new again. Still striping lawns with no effort. Got the tune up done, and took it out the next day and cut a yard that was severely overgrown with 3 foot tall grass/weeds, one pass and it was all knocked down...no 2nd pass needed. Gator Blades are GARBAGE when it comes to mowing grass. They are generally made of thicker metal for mowing over branches, etc... but for plain grass mowing, they are easily eclipsed by plain high lift blades. I bought a set, and took them off after one day.
@sonsofliberty3081
@sonsofliberty3081 3 жыл бұрын
@@n2omike good to know. I have plenty of hp for mowing pasture and lawn. Let the horses on a couple acres at a time, then when I move them I like to mow it a 4in and let it grow for a few weeks before moving them back into it. I also like to mow into the woods but I have to take big John deere with the rake on and maneuver the trees to try and get all the sticks. If I put those gators on the old tractor I can just use that for the woods then and keep my big cub for the real stuff. 25hp Kohler pro motor, zforce S with the 54in fabricated deck. Cuts amazing and at around 8mph, but it is doing 9 to 10 acres a week. I generally use my big John deere for snow but I have chains and a plow and it works really good in the snow. I do better in the snow with that zero turn with the steering wheel than I would a conventional tractor because the motor is in the rear.

If you have a three blade deck design... the real deal is that your discharge blade is a Gator blade... you want the other two blades to be high lift blades to keep your deck clean actually... your discharge is mulched up some but you can still stripe a lawn quite well... we pro’s have been running this setup for years with great success...😂😂😂

Thanks. I have been looking for replacement blades for my lawn tractor and it is tough to find. We own a Cub Cadet Enduro XT1 LT-46 that we purchased in July 2017: I think our year model is actually a 2016. I am being forced to become a better DIY Guy [sometimes I like it and sometimes I hate it] because I trusted a local shop that actually ripped us off - I paid for a tune-up and blade sharpening and did not get the service. The G6 blades are slightly heavier duty than the G5's, no real need to get the G6 blades. I have a set of both and can't tell any difference between the 2 on my lawn tractor. Both do an equally good job of mulching. I started using them about 4 years ago and have never gone back to the factory high lift blades on my lawn tractor, I see no need. The G5 and G6 blades do a great job of blowing the grass out from under and away from the mower deck when I'm not mulching. I have the mulch plug on my lawn tractor, with the G5 or G6 blades and mulch plug the leaves just disappear. I also run a G5 blade on my 21" push mower, same results, does great in both mulching and side discharge modes, I really haven't tried the bagger with the mulching blade on the push mower...I don't have a bagger for the lawn tractor, and don't really see any use for one since the mulching blades do a great job.

The Oregon gater blades work have worked well on my 42" John Deere deck for 7 years. They lift a 2 inch cut to the bagger and mulch a 1.5 inch cut with a medium drive speed. The mulching is excellent, no clumping. Makes mowing a 1/2 acre happen in 45 minutes. You are right to point out that a finer mulch will layer the deck; more liquid provides a bond. So I clean the deck about 3 times each season. So I would add another 10 minutes per mow to the maintenance column.

From my own personal experience, I've found high-lift blades give the best general overall cut, regardless of time of season. The resulting cut looks better and more even than what I have seen with other "mulching" blades or "toothed" Oregon blades. My lawn is thick (cool season grasses like tall fescue, bluegrass, rye grass - NE US) and quite wet especially during the Spring and late Fall. The high-lift blades seem to more evenly discharge the grass out the chute and leave less clumps behind, even when the grass is wet. Mulching blades will leave grass clumps behind unless you mow at a very slow crawl, and even then, grass that is thick and moisture-rich will clump pretty badly especially during the early Spring with mulching blades.

I must say, I only use mulching blades now, Crosscut over leaves, then lime the lawn first cut especially. I have about an acre of lawn - and it looks great! Keep the blades sharp too. Sears YTD 4300. Bagging Chutes, and both blade choices I think are a bit of a marketing ploy.

I haven't mowed grass in a lot of years, but I remember the Jacbson rotary with 4 short blades, each attached by a single bolt to a large cone. The cone bolted to the crankshaft. The blade would swing out of the way when striking an obstacle. The Disc would be removed, the blades reset and tightened, cone reinstalled. The small blades were reverseable and could be resharpened. There was a garrantee that the crankshaft would not bend, the only mower like it. Great design!

The info is mostly accurate, but some of the higher lift blades are notched blades. The notched high lifts we used on our super z’s are the most lift they have for them. Only downside is that the notch makes them much weaker than no notch.

I have in my time as a "pro" done a lot of lawn moving. It took about 1.5 days work to finish the area with a 110 cm deck with 3 blades. If I was lucky the blades lasted 2 times cutting then the edge was no longer sharp but instead rounded and nicked. At this time I would try to sharpend the blades the best I could but the grass did not look good with a inspection a few days later. The cut was ripped and somewhat inconsistant. An idea popped into my mind...why not make 2 edges? I sharpend the blades on the underside. The front was straightend and sharpend down to 1-1.5 millimeter. I was a happy camper better than new! Clean cuts and the blades lasted much longer. Mind you that my area is very damp and the grass is juicy!

What type of blade were you using if you don't mind me asking? The mowing crew I'm running has been having an issue with too much spring rain so constantly wet yards and it's causing horrible efficiency. I'm trying everything to help my guys not have to double and triple cut quite a few lawns. Just makes for a long day for the guys and I feel bad asking them to do 12-14hr days when they were hired on for 10's. Ooo another question if your sharpening your own baldes where you using a hollow grind or a convex if that makes sense? I'ma definitely try to do a double edge tomorrow when I sharpen them! Great info!
@Nillersoon40
@Nillersoon40 2 жыл бұрын
@@RailithicEmporthus It was standard High lift blades. You know those that are sharp in the front and in the back. For sharpening I just used a angle grinder with a lamel pad of 80 grit for the speed of it. No point to make it perfect but robust since the blades meet a lot of stone and other kling dongs...just remember to balance the blades and tell your guys not to drive to fast. I have seen it many times with a front mowing deck people forget to slow down in turns and therefore increase the speed of the deck to go faster than actual possible cutting speed. You can only go so fast it takes time for the deck to process the grass.

@Fueled Iowa- Wanted to get some input and understanding before I waste money. Mower is- rider- 2008 Yardmachine MTD. 42 deck, two blades. I brought the mower last year used and looks like still factory blades on it. I went to the lawn mower shop and told them I wanted good blades. I walked out with something called Copperhead. Mowed with them last year and they seem good. Also they weigh a good bit. I assume the blade is just standard and not Gator. Nor does each end lift up that much at all. Problem I have is I discharge a bit of grass in my yard when mowing. As I do not have a mulch kit or plug etc. I am sorta still learning about all this and brings me to some basic stuff.... 1. To mulch I need a whole kit correct? I see something for my mower as a mulch plug/cover by itself. Then there is whole kit and says something about comes with steel skirts, strap etc on MTD site. I need the plug and whole kit to mulch or just plug? Now to the blades 2. What do you suggest for my mower and mowing the yard? I mow one time a week and the grass is not tall. Setting of deck is 5 or 4. Or do I even need mulch blades or a Gator blade, mulch kit etc if I got the right blade. That or run a Gator and let it discharge... All I want to do is reduce the grass upon discharge a bit more. I'll await before I head to shop to tell them and buy. I plan to put blades on within the week as I brought a new deck shell from MTD to put on this mower. So I will be moving stuff and new parts from old deck to new.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. To much properly is a while kit. Also you should only be cutting half an inch or inch off at a time. This way it can clip everything small enough. Copperhead is a brand I think sold by rotory corp. And from everything I have heard they make a solid blade. I would use a gator style blade I think copperhead makes one as well. If all you are wanting to do is keep clippings to a smaller amount but not spend the time , effort, and money on a much kit. Hope this helps my friend and thank you again

@@fuelediowa Welcome for the watch and time. Same as well for reply back to me and sorry for delay in respond. Working has me at a live at work. So much I have not yet even got to putting new blades on yet. That will be a project in a day itself as I ordered and have a new deck shell. Now to move all the parts over ( ha ha ). I did read the reply you made and did hit the lawn shop. Copperhead is Rotory yes. They do sell a gator blade, but none in stock and all that stuff. I was also told maybe overkill on a gator. They pulled up what I brought from them last year. Which was the standard Copperhead blade. We settled at a Copperhead mulch blade- next up. That don't work then I will go gator. I do know the standard I have do cut nice just throws out grass a bit more then like. Not a whole lot just enough to make a small strip at times to have to go back over. Other then that I do find them solid as well. I do agree cutting grass half or a inch. I do that as I am not one of these mow a month attempting to be lazy and scalp as well. I set deck to 5. I will say my grass is the thicker type though. Back to the mulch kit.... Acquired a mulch plug only since I spoke of such kits. That is part-- MTD 731-2363 --. Use it with new mulch blades mentioned or toss it in trash?
@fuelediowa
@fuelediowa 3 жыл бұрын
@@joesphbaumgardner4579 mulching can be great for your lawn. In the spring though with the grass holding more moisture can cause build up quicker and need to clean your deck after every use. Just a plug may be ok depending on the deck. A lot of decks you would add shield to separate each blade compartment. This makes the grass clippings more equal across the whole width of the deck. I would try what you have. Different grass types and conditions make it a trial and error to find the best combination for your yard and your mower.

I live in east Tennessee where the dampness of grass can affect your mowing quite a bit. I recently purchased a set of Oregon Gator blades and coated the under side of my stamped deck with Vansickle graphite paint. If I mow when the grass is dry I get so little buildup that I don't have to clean it out at all... The grass only sticks around bolts and the discharge chute, but just barely. However, when the grass it wet - even a day or two after a heavy rain, the grass compacts under the deck so much that I end up having issues with lift, leaving "mohawks" on every stripe. Edit: I mow about 5 acres with an older Cub Cadet RZT S 50. The buildup isn't a problem until the last 1/2 acre or so, but it makes for quite a bit of work when I'm done. Edit 2: The Vansickle graphite paint didn't last long. It wore off mostly after a couple months and entirely by the end of the mowing season.
