Good video. Although you demonstrated it, it’s worth mentioning for newbies that there are 2 Top Dead Centers on 4 stroke engines, and only 1 is correct for adjusting. And I’ve adjusted lots of Hondas and Briggs engines, never came across “1/4 inch” past TDC”.

Thanks! Good point on the 2 separate TDCs, I should have mentioned that to avoid confusion. Hopefully, anyone that watches will look for the same pattern in the valves opening and closing. Yeah, I've heard that most should be adjusted at TDC which is why I made a point to say check your manual.

Over my life, I've adjusted the valve clearance on a lot of engines.

Did you notice anything different after adjustment? Or what should i look for that tells me it is time for adjustment?
@Mikeattempts2 ай бұрын
I don't think I really noticed much difference. However, my mower has always started easily and ran well. I thought I had heard a slight ticking sound which made me wonder if the valve were maybe a little loose. My manual (and most mower manuals) suggests checking the valve clearance every year. Since I had never done it, I figured I might as well check. From what I understand, if the valves are out of adjustment, the engine would be harder to start and possibly noisier as well.

@@Mikeattempts Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot from your video and I think this is an example of what happens when you buy a quality piece of equipment. It just keeps running but also tells you in the manual how to adjust it if needed. Really like your videos!

@@Mhakeman Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying my videos! My sister bought this mower brand new in 2001 and gave it to me in 2004 when she moved and no longer needed it. Besides normal maintenance, the only thing I've had to replace was the primer bulb a few years after I got it. It's still on the original belt! :) Plus, it has an aluminum deck so no rust.

@@Mikeattempts Aluminium doesn't rust, but it will corrode if not kept clean. It looks like you look after your mower well.

@@Mikeattempts If valve clearance is excessive, you'll get a lot of noise from the rockers and it may be harder to start.. On the other hand, if valve clearance is insufficient or non-existent, starting will be difficult. In both cases, the engine will develop less power. Valve clearance is pretty important to be within specifications. Good quality engines will stay in spec a lot longer than cheap junk engines.

It's official...John Deere has changed their name to Mexican JD Turd/Diareah.
@Mikeattempts2 ай бұрын
I have no experience with their newer stuff, but this mower has been nothing but dependable for the past 20 years.

Um Mike..why does anyone f with JF pice of crap stuff anymore? They lost the cheapness fake war. Toss em off the shelf and go red to Case IH.
@Mikeattempts2 ай бұрын
I don't think Case makes walk-behind lawn mowers. ;)
