I have a compression test on this motor revealing 115 PSI. I'm on the fence on doing the rings. Thoughts? The motor smokes on startup and then fades. A trusted mechanic indicated a possible blown head gasket, and I do have a new carb. I do get 'surge'.

115 is plenty of PSI. I wouldn’t suspect the rings. If it is surging and black smoke I would just swap the carb with a cheapo Amazon carb.

@@MowerMike That's basically what I did. I got online with a tech and we're going to swap that new carb for something a bit more reputabe. We suspect a head gasket is needed too. Thanks for the reply

Why do gasket kits come with 2 head gasket

Loving your vids brother, thought I was subscribed but I am now. This is only my 2nd small engine head gasket replacement and first Briggs. The Kohler I did came with new head bolts but the Briggs kit does not. It appears you're reusing the original head bolts, I'm assuming that's okay to do on these? Please excuse my ignorance and thank you for your knowledge !!

I always have reused head bolts on these motors without any issues.
