I'm completely with you on that mate, if I had my way we would take on no new customers that require anything more than cutting the lawns, in my area(Merseyside) the time it takes you to properly weed borders and trim hedges is worth much more than the average customer is willing to pay, we must be loosing money every time we do them because the time spent trimming the hedges and the cleaning up we could have done 2 or 3 smallish lawns and made 3 times as much!

Two years ago I stopped weeding jobs and only advertised for lawns and hedges, it worked and I now have 74 lawns. It's also very dry here in Kent, some lawns look like we are into August! I've never experienced this before where the grass didn't grow like F#*c in spring!!! Hourly rate.... your so right as people always ask, I always reply with "I don't have one as I price jobs" Hope it rains soon take care buddy.

cheers, its raining now, love the work, thinking of getting one of those mowers now, good price and ideal for some of my lawns. I have done a few scraifying jobs recently with over seeding, had to explain if the lawns aren't watered they wont come back as quick. and now its raining for over a week, can't win.

nice little vid curtis. my customers never know my hourly rate it just ends up as either fixed price or price for what was required on that visit. my fortnightly customers will always get better deal than one off jobs as your regulars keep you in work year after year.anyway as you know the more you get established you part company with clients that don't fit your way of operating & them annoying ones we just can't please or get on with LOL. keep up the good work. cheers.

Nice to see Juno looking well! I've posted previously that you're better off keeping to mowing only. Weeding and hedge cutting is hard work, often quite strenuous with tons of waste to take away, not much money in it either. Lawn mowing always will be more costly to the customer compared to general gardening due to the operating costs ie. petrol, repairs and servicing, diesel in the van etc., they never see the hidden costs. Only when you bunch the gardens in close together can you hope to make even a modest income. Avoid travelling long distances as this loses vital production time. Stay good!

Hello Curtis, hope your well bud. Just want to add my bit here, I k ow how you feel about the weeding it is a pain but it's apart of our industry I suppose :) i have stuck with hourly rates cos then if the customer wants grass cut or strumming then it's money still but they get a quick fix, but on the flip side when it's the wedding side it will almost always take longer so then I'm more in profit. I think it's swings and roundabouts, what I have changed is I tell all my customers I won't take their waste away otherwise it's likely to cost more as it's my time having to go to the trade site plus petrol and waste cost so when I tell erm this they are happy to let me use their own green garden bins. I'm totally honest from the off and so far it's working well. obviously every customer is different but I find it I tell them from the off then there is no confusion. I'm not very good with doing price jobs as I tend to find I'm losing out so for me I'll stick with the hourly rates.
@johnmacrae92087 жыл бұрын
9 years ago when I started I did landscape gardening at an hourly rate and made very little profit for the first 2 years then changed to just doing fencing and grass cutting some hedge trimming at set prices its defiantly better. But I think I needed to learn how to price things figure out what not to waste money on and how to deil with customer's to be able to run things the way I run them now but you know what it's like I'm still learning.
@uklawncare85057 жыл бұрын

Great vid as always. I've started doing the same pricing as a whole rather than hourly. I always feel they're watching my every move hourly and if priced correctly you make more money charging per job. Wet and miserable down here in Devon been out and done 5 quotes today but unable to cut grass due to being too wet! Forcasts a real crappy week down here. Days like this I wish I had an office job lol

Think more uk guys are getting into quotes prices than hourly. Definitely the people I know. I had one priced it a bit high and it went from 40 min mow to hour mow and tidying up the garden seems fair. Draught is ridiculous. The wash port is handy if u do it every job? Rain forecast for this week...i'm curious to see what the new Hayter picks up like when it is wet. that is the litmus test for that one. The Honda engine was a good move by Hayter and the upgrade looks like it has had some thought but everyone knows 48s and 56s are dreadful when there is the slightest bit of moisture in the grass so it will be interesting to see how this one bags.

Hayter Mowers...when do we get a pro spec 48 with a honda engine that can pick up in the wet? I like the look of the new pro 41 but it is on the small side.
@GregsMowing7 жыл бұрын
greg truscott greg even if they know I doubt they will say. Seems they announce things at saltex. I have asked them on twitter and no answer. Haha. I got rid of my 48 pro to get the 41 pro. It's quicker than the 48. Bags more so depending on the size of lawn. It doesn't make much difference. If it's wet and ur always stopping on 48 you may not on 41. Turtle and hare scenario. Hare is 48.

Don't know why, but seeing the mower leaning on its side annoyed me a bit. Always been brought up leaning them back towards the handlebars as tipping them on their side can lead to fuel going where fuel shouldn't be going, such as the air filter.

Having been a gardener for over 40 years, I do find the habits of 'mow n go's' quite annoying. Some don't even do the edges or around shrubs getting only as close as their mowers can get. I also don't believe that they should call themselves 'gardeners', to dislike weeding or 'trim the odd bush' . Gardening is not just mowing! By all means become a 'Lawn Specialist' but that does not entail a quick strim and a fifteen minute mow before heading of to the next job. I was rather surprised to see this mower tipped onto its side on the grass (not yet a lawn) where a petrol leak will kill the grass you will need to cut next time, making unsightly patches. Good to see how you run your business though and see you using a great mower. Don't let this clients' bushes get leggy, embrace the chance to do some weeding listening to the birdsong and deadheading as required....there is always something to do in a garden and only a small part of it is mowing!
