due to our grass not ready to graze before late June, every fall i broad cast just a rye grass on all my fields, in the fall. so it gets my cows steers calves an bull off hay sooner, this year with the very late snow melt an end of big snow storms, it melted off really fast, then we had 3 huge thunder storms dumping over 6 inchs of rain, and cold. the rye grass it only 3 to 4 inchs tall. but the cows are chasing it,, i couldnt be leave what i had to pat last fall for rye grass seed,it was over $80 a bag, when normally it been around 30

They are doing what you are doing here on the rented fields on our land this year, but in past years they would just spray roundup on it and kill it then plant corn in the dead standing cover crop, I don't understand it but it seems to be better to chop and feed it. I just grow vegetables now so what do I know. LOL
@herbhouston53782 жыл бұрын
It's hard to always figure out the right thing to do. Producing quality "product" and still remain viable. All your costs, every one, continue to go up... and then someone else tells you how much to sell it for. It's perishable... it can't just sit on in a warehouse somewhere. Even hay can not be kept indefinitely. It'll lose feed value. As a farmer, you work hard every day and hope no animal gets sick or no calf dies before it even has a chance to be born. You hope no piece of equipment breaks. Your stock don't get out and, maybe, get to a road and cause a wreck. It's hard, and sometimes a seemingly thankless job, but ya know... I would still do it every day... if only I could. I never loved anything as much as farming. Paul Harvey recited a piece about "A farmer" years ago. See if you can find it somehow. It says a lot about who you are❤
@acresofclayhomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thank You!! Paul Harvey said it well.

Not surprised the cows would do well. Feeding green to the cows it's 25% more nutrition ! A lot is lost during fermentation. Now if you were to graze grass stands directly you would increase tonnage by 25% as well. Of coarse you might choose different grasses instead of cereal rye. Grain feeding probably needed to be reduced by at least 50% . The opportunities to reduce your biggest cost - feeding cows - are huge . Therefore your opportunities to increase profits are huge. Ask me how I know ? wink

Rhonda, Dumb question, Kevin said that 1 of the grass's gives the cow's more energy, how does that relate to the cow producing more milk? Me not being a farmer is just wondering, I would be the guy driving the milk truck to the dairy producers. Cool video as always.
@acresofclayhomestead2 жыл бұрын
More energy does mean more milk.
@wildbill51262 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that. but wasn't for sure on it. Still a very cool video especially the drone footage.

That mower works a lot faster than our old Owatona swather. I like the wide wind row for drying out a thick harvest. We were stuck with cutting partial swaths. Is your wind row width adjustable? Have you considered separating out an A2 guernsey operation? Would you have a local A2 milk buyer?
@acresofclayhomestead2 жыл бұрын
Our row width is adjustable. As of now, we don't plan to separate any of the herd. All milk goes together.

Over here in lreland we call this zero grazing and we have a trailer with a mower on it a sorta mow it load it job , one man one machine and we feed it out directly from the trailer to the cows they Hoover it up like spaghetti! On our place we feed grass to our cows about 280 days a year, it is just rye grass and clover and we cut it every 17 to 20 days when grass is growing well and at the shoulders of the year it could be up to a 40 day rotation. Basically we grow grass and maybe a little maize for silage. We aim to grow about 12 to 14 tonnes of dry matter per hectare.
@acresofclayhomestead2 жыл бұрын
That's amazing! You have a much longer grazing season. 👍
@randymaylowski24852 жыл бұрын
I was about to say "if they love the fresh cut chop"? And if " it has better protein and nutrients"? then why not just give it to them plain then with no mix?? But I think I know where you guys are going? Trying to do it so they don't get the 💩 of bypassing too much unbroke down body waste....lol Plus also probably given them mixed of salt and minerals and some other things. But Ronda has it been wet down their at your guy's farm? Our small farm just little ways south of the Mic,Bridge we are in a drought zone already hay fields are shorter usual, not even a foot tall in most places. Other than that good video and thanks for sharing your guy's info☺.
