Really Bad Section of Track and I Have to Fix it on Christmas Eve

A section of our track sunk and it's got to get fixed on Christmas Eve.
The joints in this section sunk fairly quickly after all the rain we had
gotten in the past several weeks. But a month after I made these repairs
to the track we had a geometry truck run our track and this area still
looked very good which pleased me to see that.

I know how you feel. I haven't had Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Years Eve or New Years off in over 10 years due to my work schedule. On the plus side I get triple time and miss out on all of the family squabbles. The train operator sounds like a good man to have around. that starting track condition is what all most every single yard looks like, in the multiple yards i work in. Its fun to walk in all day.

Wet coal is slippery to walk on so you can imagine how the ties react to being filled around with the wet coal Atesh. You do have my sympathies if you have to walk around in that stuff all day. Thank you for taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.

It’s amazing how packing rock 🪨 in and under the ties can be done. And not removing all of the rail and timber to rebuild bed 🛏️

Looks like it would be nice if the tamping “rods or paddles” could be turned 90deg when you are cleaning out between the ties. You need a actuator on the arm and switch inside.

Yes it would but this tamper is not designed to do what I was doing Ron. 98% of the time I tamp ballast under the ties and not sweep it out from the ties so no tools are available that are turned the other way. Thank you for taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.

The biggest problem I see there is sitting water. It’s not draining from the ballast, which tells me it’s full of dirt, mud and crushed ballast that makes it as thick as concrete, but liquifies under load. You do your best with what you have and it shows!

Working on a holiday was always big bucks. We were usually laid off by then and if they called you to come in there was no way we were going to refuse. Most of us anyway. That little spot there would take a section a day to pump up by hand. Ol' John would have his level board and we'd hand tamp it a little high and "rop er hard". I'm 30 years gone from the railroad but it was the best years of my life.

I once had a section foreman named John also Ralph, he was a slave driver. Luckily we don't get laid off for the winter since this is a coal mine and we run coal all year round. Really appreciate your taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.

Hi Mr. Dave, yes don't know a lot about the railroad equipment, however my cousin works for the BNSF he mentioned that an under cutter was needed, maybe the mine would get one for just that purpose, great video sir see on the next on.

Under cutting track is the way to go, but it takes a lot of down time when trains aren't running to do it with the few amount of track workers we have here Terry. We've gotten under cutters in before on extended down times. Real pain to fix down ties tho. Really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

Seems like a simple clamp-on 'shovel' to move the ballast out from between the ties would save a lot of time and do a better job of removing the mud from between the ties. Enjoy the vids!

We have a section of commuter rail that gets flooded because it crosses through wetlands. But they replaced those with concrete sleepers. And raised it up almost 2 feet up so it doesn't flood the tracks anymore.

Running thru flooded tracks is hard on traction motors so no wonder they raised the tracks up readyset. Really appreciate your watching the video and happy rails to you my friend. It’s a shame they are about to tear out 20 miles of old N&W rail here near me that closed in 2003. Up until they quit spraying weed killer it was in really great shape. That ballast is really thick and clean also. It’s going to be a bike trail soon.

that really made a huge difference to the track it's looking so much better happy new year Dave I might have already said that but no matter the weathermen are saying the snow is coming I don't want snow because I cant get out the house in my wheelchair when it snows only roads are salted around here pavements are never touched by the council so I have to wait until it melts and that can take a while.
