👩🏻‍🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

Learned from a friend that went to New York upstate college for horticulture and his teacher who created the Scott’s grad seed breed of see they sell taught to cut grass as high as you can to block out weeds and keep the moisture in the earth so you do t have to water it and then the last cut of the fall you scalp the lawn as low as you can go because he said it lets the grass put all its energy into growing deeper roots during the winter so next season it has more water supply to reach and more nutrients.

That does work if the calcium levels are okay. Low calcium and you ain't stopping weeds. I cut my lawn to the longest setting which is I guess 5" or inches for that very reason. And I still get Dandelions and will I figure till I get the calcium at the surface. The longer grass does hold water better and is lush.

@@1JasonBradly Interesting, I’ve not had that problem in places with cut. This was all around central jersey growing up and landscaping. On the higher end lawns that were lush and most beautiful we did. We cut high and for the best lawns we fertilized with manor and also would plug and reseed each season closer to fall or so. Never saw weeds ever. Perhaps we have good calcium there, I really can’t say. I’m now living in Oklahoma for the past four years now and don’t keep lawns anymore. Got myself I’ve always been a lover of natural and here I would never have a perfect lawn. I love all to look as natural as it likes to be. Wild. I’ve only had one home in NJ that was in an area that was the well kept lawn tips of area and there I kept the best lawn in town, like picturesque. Deep dark green with perfect beautiful striping.

Rule of thumb i was taught was to never remove more than one third of the height of the grass as well as setting your mower to the highest cut which is 3" on mine.

Well, I just broke all those rules. 😄😄 We've had so much rain this spring, most of our lawn areas have been either really, really wet, or under water. I've never seen the ground so saturated, and I grew up here! Not only do we walk on the wet lawn, I have to drive on it to unload the truck by the house. I've never seen tire tracks left like this in the inner yard before, and that areas has had tractors, septic trucks and various other equipment driving over it, pretty much ever year. This spring, we only managed to mow a couple of small areas, and not very well, until now. I finally finished all the inner yard, plus the high traffic areas of the outer yard (yes, we have a lot of yard) mowed yesterday. It took me two days. Yes, the grass was still quite wet. Today, we got another deluge, and we've got standing water again. I'm hoping to rake up the clippings in some areas soon because they are so thick, they will kill the grass below, but we've got only 2 days before more rain is forecast. The area between what I was able to mow in the outer yard and the barn isn't grass anymore. It's hay. I can't even scythe it because it's too wet, and the high winds have flattened it. I've actually been asking the family that rents the land beyond the outer yard if we can borrow some of their cows when the rotate their herd to our section, so they can graze it down. It's been wild! This year, our mowing has to happen during a brief window of opportunity! It's been really difficult to get our transplants in, but I am so glad we have at least low raised beds set up. The paths around the garden beds are full of water again, and our transplants would be drowned out, otherwise. I'm in central Canada. As I write this, we're raining again, and it's 12C, with a "feels like" of 4C.

So 19 months a year here in BC we should not walk on the turf? A lighter mower like the plastic cutting deck Honda HRX and one with reasonably wide tires are helpful in damp conditions.

Mulching blade or mower. I too thought removing the cuttings to be a poor idea so I got a mower that has a closed door to the output thrower when there is no bag. A mulching mower. You can get mulching blades for standard mowers too.

I’ve read that if you mow your lawn high you’ll reduce the need for watering the lawn. So this year I thought I’d try it and so far for me it’s 💯 true. This year i have mowed my lawn at the highest setting or the second highest setting and I’ve only had to water the lawn TWICE. Last year it was watered at least once per week. huh ? That’s significant savings on my water bill.

I would block off the holes of both pots to hold the water, and use a glazed inner pot (a bowl or a pot should work instead of a clay pot). I think the towel is blocking any breeze on the sides as well.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on these robot mowers. Specifically, longevity of the device and quality of parts (and whether it's good for a larger property). I'm thinking of getting one of my parents who are in their senior years.

Ashley, have recently come across your KZbin channel. Very much love the content. Here in Nebraska it has been cool and wet this year. Last year was dry, not excessively hot thought. Several years ago I modified my mower so I mow at 4 1/4 inches (10 3/4 cm). Since I have done this I have not had the blue grass go dormant during extreme heat waves. I have a lot less weeds. I have not had to water as much. I also do not have annual summer grasses come up during the hot summers nearly as much as when I mowed shorter. I do need to get into mower more than once a month. I can almost bale my grass when I mow (about 10 inches, 25 cm, tall). I have to remove it so the clippings do not smother and kill out the grass. Does make great compost, and a lot of it, though.

Those golf turf guys have a very respectable science about things. But my grass only exists to be turned into mulch. I don't do anything but mow it. Ours is also full of moss so I am trying to kill it by not dropping grass back down. That stuff will survive a year in the compost pile lol. All the places where the grass isn't naturally lush and green are where I want to put more garden. Those areas get more light. Except under trees. It's not too clear to me why those areas also have so much moss. Years of not mowing I guess. Had tons of rain and a cold spring.Bit rainy this June but overall, summer is very much here. Over 80 if not raining. My broccoli I planted in march is just now forming heads. I expect i'll be eating broccoli flowers soon instead :P I want to to call the bot Clip-E

I love the advice, but it is the complete opposite where I live (willamette Valley, Oregon, USA). It rains for 8 months without ever getting 24 hours dry and the grass grows like gangbusters all winter. Pros here mow in the rain, because if we didn’t , no residential mower could cut our grass! 6 sunny hours in February and I guarantee, everyone is wet mowing their lawns!

Think of naming your mower Edward (or Eddie) as an ode to Edward Scissorhands. In terms of mowing, I would like to let clippings on grass but with the weeds, i don’t want to sow the seeds all over. Suggestions?

Thanks to your videos, I know that compaction results From walking on/mowing your lawn when it’s wet, and now I know that it’s hard on the actual grass blades themselves. But what’s a PNW/Maritime Northwest girl to do when the grass grows robustly the end of March, but It continues to rain and the ground is soggy through April? This year it is now June, the rain has continued, and the ground is still technically too soggy for mowing. 🙄 Alas….Probably no real solution for our dilemma. Sure do appreciate your videos, though! (For reference, I am in Northwest Washington state, USDA zone 7B)
