@@bevrolee8887 you'd be surprised for how much more you can sell a property if you make the garden look decent and give the house a new layer of paint. Once the wilderness is gone and it doesn't look like a ruin anymore the property value skyrockets because people see the jungle and think it would be way over their heads to fix it. While a good bush cutter and some trimming usually does the trick.

There's actually a house two blocks from mine in which nobody lives in. That house barely gets enough maintenance, and it isn't for sale either. The grass gets so tall, you can barely drive a bike through the sidewalk without catching a strong blade of grass on your pedals and getting caught in the mess. I believe it gets mowed once every year, but it takes the maintenance crew like 2-3 days to try to cut the grass down near the roots so they don't have to come over to mow it often. I can't imagine how the backyard of that abandoned house looks like if the front is a jungle.

Well for the price and condition, yes we did. As soon as they discovered we put in a serious offer they suddenly gave zero F's about the place. That's what I was thinking. In my neighborhood, there is a really old cemetery, which the city of Bowling Green owns. During the summer, the city rents 5 or 6 goats from a goat farmer. The farmer brings the coat to the enclosed cemetery, and within a month, the goats have that cemetery eaten completely down. Those goats eat every bit of grass, weeds, tree shoots, you name it. No one ever mows that little cemetery. Our city just rents goats, and the gentleman living next door fills the goats' water container every day.

I actually love and prefer jobs like this because I enjoy making something that looks like hell look nice! But sometimes customers just dont understand the time and effort not to mention the beating it takes on equipment. Ive walked away from plenty of these jobs because the customer just expects you to do it for nothing! Not because I am an asshole. Screw that!

Very good points. It was a great learning experience and made a very popular viewing experience so I am happy I took it, but yeah, I would check myself before taking on something like this again if it weren't for youtube. :)
@gregwolking5 жыл бұрын
This job would have been at least somewhat more manageable had you used the proper equipment. IMHO, this job screamed for a bush hog, not a lawn mower, for your first assault. That seemed obvious to me from your very first views of the property. I'm surprised that the light bulb didn't go on when you resorted to the hedge trimmer to knock down the lightest bits of the back yard. A bush hog would have made short work of most (if not all) of that mess, and saved you a lot of sweat and back strain to boot. You probably could have gotten most of the entire yard knocked down in about a quarter of the time you spent with the mower. Sure, I understand if you don't own a bush hog. They're not cheap, they take up a lot of space, and they don't really make much economic sense to own, store, and maintain if the vast majority of your business deals with maintaining normal residential lawns. However, I can't help but cringe when I see lawn guys beating the crap out of a *LAWN MOWER* on stuff like this. There's a reason why they're called "lawn mowers", you know. ;) Such machines are engineered and built to cut *grass* and *nothing else*, including head-high weeds, saplings, and/or small trees. Just because the engine is powerful enough to get through that stuff without bogging down is no excuse to abuse the machine like that. Blades get bent and/or broken. Decks get dents and/or holes punched through them. The blade drive shafts, bearings, and their mounting points take a beating for which they were *not* engineered to handle. Again, IMHO (I am not a professional in the field) the cost to rent a bush hog for a day is entirely justified by *not* taking months (if not years) off of the service life of your mower or, even worse, suffering a catastrophic failure halfway through the job. Here endeth the nit-picking from the peanut gallery. This is meant to be constructive -- call it a "philosophical rant", if you like -- not some kind of "slam" against you. Quite frankly, I'm impressed by the progress you made in the time you took with the equipment you had. :)

Having been raised in the country, I am very well aware of what constitutes a haven for snakes and there is no way I would have jumped off that mower and gone hot footing it through all those weeds and overgrown bushes. Some of those snarky comments were totally uncalled for. Why should he risk a snake bite when he had a "Big Dog" mower that would allow him to SAFELY go through that same area? Without even mowing the entire property, he mowed enough to disturb that one snake that he filmed and there is no telling how many of that snake's friends and family members were also lurking somewhere nearby. Seems to me that deciding not to go charging into that overgrowth was a very wise decision. As he stated, the final product is not great but it is much better than it was and when property is that over run with weeds and grass and bushes it will take at least two or three times being mowed to get it to look decent. Job well done, sir. It is very easy to sit safely behind a computer screen and make nasty comments about a man who has enough sense to look at property and see the potential of that property being over run with snakes. I guess he could have BRAVELY charged into that mess and BRAVELY come away with a snake bite but I personally think it was a slightly better plan for him to WISELY approach the situation and WISELY walk away without a snakebite.

Get yourself a good scythe and a sharpening stone for it. It'll be hard work, but it'll work great, and it won't shed the weeds like conventional means, so you can clean up much easier. Scythes cut better than you would expect, even an old rusty one. However, if you have a tight time constraint like here, use the quicker method. Although, you probably cut through a hell of a lot of poison ivy, and I don't thing aerated poison ivy is good for anybody. I see that a scythe would've been ideal for clearing a path for the mower too. I'm not saying you have to use one, but trust me, it is damn good exercise.
