One thing you could do in the future is buy like a 4yd rear load dumpster and rent it out. That way, there isn't much manual pickup, and that would allow people to throw away a lot at once, like doing small renovations or moving out or something Idk. It's just something to consider. I figure it'd be easy considering you already have the truck, but that's just my thoughts

Hey Brad, I would do junk removal or rent the trailer out as a "roll off" for roofers or something. Just to off set the costs of the trailer and profits are pretty good in that field and goes right along with trash pick up.

At least when you do this job during the holiday season, you get to see pretty christmas lights. I am glad that you are honest about the costs of running a business. A lot of people think that you are rich when you own your own business, they don't think about all the money that has to go into the costs of running the business.

No, I've covered why in previous videos. There isn't any infrastructure at the landfill to allow it (their recycling facility is a 7*10 dump trailer) and there wouldn't be enough locally interest to justify the purchase of new cans or a new route.

Recycling is a scam anyway. Majority of it ends up in a landfill anyway.

I think it’s time for a upgrade… Take a look at a Labrie Minimax or Curbtender auto-cat. The autocat is capable of having a split body configuration, so you can haul two types of trash, thus you could do recycle or yardwaste, at the same time as trash!
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts Күн бұрын
I would disagree. The limiting factor isn't the truck, it's how many cans I have placed. The next stage of this business isn't getting a new truck, it's putting out 600 cans then re-evaluation of numbers and goals. For recycling, there isn't any infrastructure at the landfill for me to offer that even if I wanted. It wouldn't make me any money and would only hurt the business.

Yes. If you watch from the beginning of the playlist that was my original desire but they are too expensive so my wife and I settled on a much cheaper rear load that she would drive for me.

Stop with the cookies/gifts of $750. If you need to get into that, leave a personally signed Christmas card or thank you card from your family taped to the top of the trash can after pick up one shift in December. The next shift you will find some clients leaving you a card with money or gift cards in it thanking you. That's how it works in my area. Great way for the trashman to earn tips that aren't reported. More importantly on your advertising fees in each category what is the actual response or new customer rate? And cut your mailing costs by using postcards instead of full size letters.
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts Күн бұрын
No thanks, I liked what I did and so did my customers. The cookies were closer to $500. It averaged out to $4.50 per client. I'm happy to give that back to the folks who make this business possible, and it also turned into organic marketing as half a dozen Facebook posts were made of folks taking pictures of the cookies and telling others about them.

8:55 I get you used what your projecting to be a typical year, but you started the company in late may so June to December would be 7 months of insurance 7 months 7x850= 5,590, but it'd be even less then that because you didn't get the truck until August so that'd be 850x5= 4,250

Curious what Credit Cards you were able to get in the business name without having credit to start. Did you have to personally secure them?
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 күн бұрын
The credit cards are all under Baker County Trash Pickup LLC. The first card I applied for was from the same company that I have had my CCC card with for 7 years, so I am assuming my history there is what led them to extend credit. Once someone did, others were more likely to.

I would keep the trailer, if i were you. Trailer will pay for itself eventually, and allows you to offer alternate trash pickup options (like a whole house getting cleared out)

I think the person that objected to the trash truck at home must be someone who would be right at home in an HOA. Frankly he sounds like someone who doesn't want to admit that he HAS garbage. I think you are fortunate to NOT be involved with an HOA, I have only heard horror stories about these organizations, and the power hungry busy bodies that always seem to worm their way into the leadership of them. By the way - I think ORANGE was a great color choice for your business. It's a good way to be noticed.

It was very good to include some of the credit side of the business in this video. I think many people don't fully realize some of the complexities of this side. I once worked with a fellow who said he had a stack about 1 inch thick of credit cards he'd applied for, though he didn't use most of them. What he likely didn't realize is that the only thing worse than having a stack of credit cards like that, is having the stack of cards where only a few HAD a balance, then cancelling card(s) WITHOUT a balance. This hurts your credit, because now the total amount you owe over your total credit available becomes a higher percentage of your available credit than what it was before. I didn't realize this myself at the time.

@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 күн бұрын
No worries at all, I know this won't be for most folks. I have made videos on why I don't make lawn care videos as much anymore. "A long overdue mowing video. Some comments seem to think I have abandoned lawn care for my new trash pickup endeavor. I am still mowing every single week, but it is just my regular maintenance customers. Not worth filming or watching. I haven't had any tall grass jobs come my way in quite some time. I suspect a large part of that is the growing number of local individuals who do lawn care on the side and are usually very cheap and easy to get a hold of on a local Facebook group." That was from the last tall grass one I did in August, which performed fairly poorly. Long term I would expect the branding to transition as the trash company grows. I appreciate you watching the past videos and trying these ones out, no hard feelings if you part ways!

It is a bottle of dunkin donuts creamer. Think of the plastic jugs with a screw on lid. The pressure of compaction smushed the bottom flat and through the crack, and then the bottom flared open again. I'm not strong enough to push it through the crack, not gonna try to pull from the inside (since I'd have to crawl in the hopper for leverage), and can't pull it through from the outside because the mouth/lid gets caught on the back! I had to cut it out :D

great video Brad, I've been following on along on your journey its very intriguing. one question for you though. since you and your wife are the only employees, if you and your family decide to take a vacation that is longer than a week, are sick, or have some other requirement you have to attend to, how does the trash get picked up when customers expect it weekly? thanks! 2nd question is you have a lot of expenses but how to tax write offs work with all these and does making youtube videos about the business allow for some tax incentives as well?

The few times we have vacationed in past years at a week length we hated it and got homesick. 3-5 days is our max for vacations. We would just have to plan the vacation around the trash. Theoretically once a year or so I could probably get away with moving a pickup a day in either direction without making customers mad, but again, I don't think we would ever take a vacation that long.

Generally you won't see much support unless your state/county/city makes it a priority, none of which have locally. There is no money to be made in recycling, nor is there infrastructure to support it even if I wanted to offer it.
