Gregory Sierra was the old guard and Olmos was the change needed for the show. Sierra was great, though, by the way. Two incredible actors, just that very few can bring intensity to a role like EJO.

Agreed. Castillo is my favorite character and his combination of Stoicism & adherence to the Bushido Code made him very memorable. I love the episodes where we learn more about his background in East Asia, but I also really like that so much of him was left as an enigma. Olmos commands the screen in all of his roles. Castillo and Adama are two of the top 10 TV characters of all time IMO and they are very different from eachother despite both being EJO. Incredible actor and seems like a really good man.

That actually wasn't in the script. Olmos noticed the cops treated his predecessor like someone to work AROUND, not WITH (coy looks, knowing smiles) and he felt it was an old trope. He ad-libbed that line without the actors knowing it, and their reactions were caught on film. (After the cut, one of the other actors had to dissuade Philip Michael Thomas from taking a swing at Olmos.) Olmos knew his character had to command respect.

The memorable characters, regardless if they were male or female, have always been those with a certain intensity who can single-handedly carry a scene, especially if they had an economy of words. People like Eastwood, Mitchum, and Olmos are prime examples. There's a very fine line between overplaying it, and keeping it right there on the line. The character of Castillo brings it right up to that razors edge. Well played.

The show would've never lasted without the character arc and depth Eddy added. It was heading down the long, formula driven path of it's detective predecessors. He arrived and simply,..destabilized character development. Not even his fellow actors knew what to think about his style. It's undeniable that his acting brought 'weight' to all the scenes. In the pastel nightmare of Miami, he wore a cheap black suit. Less frosting, more cake.😉

EJ ALOMOS knew exactly what he was doing in the creation of his character Castillo. We know of the beef that was stirred up with Don Johnson, but Don running high off the shows success and his own enormous fame and attention took Alomos character building personally , as if it was ment to subdue his character when it was anything but. Alomos was building a character never seen before in that particular role. The Show centered on the two hot shot detectives, but realistically those two would still have to answer to a superior, which was not much of the case with Dons Character Crokette and their original Police chief Lou Rodriguez played by Gregory Sierra. Crokette talked down to his then police chief who at least story wise was thought to be taking bribes from the bad guys. It was Crockette being disrespectful to his superior. Show wise the played out the distrust and the fact that even the police was being bought out by the bad guys. Don considered himself the superior with no equal. But James understood his character needed to be larger and smarter than them all. but also a mystery and completely quite. Like a lion in wait, ready to pounce at a moments call. And thats exactly how he played Castillo.. He was purely straight, no kidding whatsoever, so smiles no laughs. In this way he kept the show anchored within the seriousness of each episodes theme and topic. He made the Vice unit realistic and serious. And it allowed Crockett and tubs to shine as these two hot shot cowboy Detectives. Whenever Castillo was in an operation or even just on screen, it immediately gave a higher degree of drama, and realism. They didnt know what Alomos was creating at the time, but im more than sure after the first season of his arrival they finally understood his direction was universally the best creative decision. And helped the show and all its characters just that much more.

He is a freak. He thinks of himself as a samurai. He never speaks two words when one will do. Every single thing he says and does comes out of this well of silence and consideration of his honor that he cultivates, and his life is as mindful as is humanly possible. Try an experiment and live like he does for one hour, let alone one day. It's incredibly difficult. It's one of the greatest characters ever created in a TV series. His character makes the show special. Otherwise it's just a lot of window dressing and flash.
